Every human is a one-time phenomenon. When a person is born, it’s like the creation of Adam; each is born in a specific time of history and in a specific environment to fulfil a “soul” task that nobody else can. Never before, never again. This uniqueness gives you great importance. Only you can accomplish your un ique life task. Heaven doesn’t create people in vain. If you are here and alive, is because the Creator knows you are important. 1 st thought: To believe in God because It makes you feel better. Atheists commonly say that believers believe in God because it makes us feel better. And in part that’s truth. It’s scientifically proven than prayer, meditation and faith in the Transcendence makes people feel better. However, If I’m going to believe in God, It won’t be because it makes me feel better; that’s called escapism, avoiding reality. What good is there in believing in the ‘flying pink unicorn’ only to feel better? I’d rather ask: Does the Flying Pink Unicorn exist? Did anyone see it? Is there any evidence? If the only answer I get is: “Just believe, make no questions”, you can be sure I won’t waste my time anymore with such a creature. I won’t base my beliefs in the traditions of my family, nor in fairytales, or imposed doctrines. I won’t believe just because a bunch of “believers” tell me: “It’s the truth” or “

introduction: The story we are going to tackle today is about that time when Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus met a disciple of Yeshua of Nazareth. The baraitha (i.e., a story that was known orally but wasn’t written down until much later) depicts a friendly conversation between the two, but ends up with Eliezer being denounced and accused of heresy, or minuth ( מינות ). There are three versions of this story: the shortest is in the Tosafot; then there is a longer one (the most famous) from the Talmud, and the final and longest version in the Midrash Rabbah (repeated in Yalqut Shimoni), each one in different contexts and timeframes, with different details, different nuances, and each one actually depicting Judaism’s “current” relationship with Christianity. What is Rosh haShana? Our sages gave this name to the 1st day of the 7th Biblical month, which is called Tishrei in Jewish calendar (Tishrei תשרי derives from the Akkadian language and means “the beginning”, directly related to the Hebrew ‘Reshit’ ראשית ). In Scripture it is called Yom Teruah יום תרועה (the day of sounding [shofar]) ( cf. Leviticus 23:24, Numbers 29:1 ), and it’s commonly known as the famous Judgment Day (yom haDin, cf. Psalm 81:5, mishna Rosh haShana 1:2 ), and the day in which every person is sealed with their mazal – their fate ( cf. Bava Bathra 10a ). Our Rosh haShana רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה ─ which is an expression used in Scripture (Ezekiel 40:1) although in reference to a Jubilee year ─ is one of the four different new years in Judaism, each one serving their own purpose; the main two being Nissan (1st month) and Yom Teruah (7th month). “ When you enter the Land that God is giving you…you shall take from the first of all the fruit of the ground ” ( Dt 26:1-2 ). From these words we learn that everything that is for God’s sake should be of the best and most beautiful ( cf. Rambam ), as the Torah says: “ Kol Khelev leHaShem ” – ‘all the fat is for HaShem’, or ‘the choicest of everything is for HaShem’ ( Lv 3:16 ). “If you come across a bird’s nest in the way… Do not take the mother bird together with the children” ( Deut 22:6 ) A RATIONAL APPROACH Like most commands in the Bible, God doesn’t tell us his reasons for this command. It is up to us to obey first and then understand, as stated at Sinai: “ naashe venishma ” (we will do [first, and then] we will hear [or understand]; Ex 24:7 ). The Bible expects from us to obey the commands first and foremost in order to obey God; because he said so, period. Once we are living in this emunah (faith, fidelity), THEN we have the right to explore the reasons and question everything, with the intend to cling deeper unto Him.
