Walk into Co-Creative Placekeeping meeting How can artists and communities work together to challenge inequities, shape neighborhood narratives, and drive meaningful change? On June 21, 2025 we gathered for a roundtable discussion inspired by the new book Co-Creative Placekeeping in Los Angeles: Artists and Communities Working Together (Routledge, 2023). Featuring socially engaged artists, scholars, and civic partners, this conversation explored how artists collaborate with communities to address pressing issues such as displacement, affordable housing access, building belonging, and sustainable living for all neighbors. Presentations to Kick-Off the Discussion David Sloane and Brettany Shannon gave a summary presentation of their book (co-authored with Anne Bray) “Co-Creative Placekeeping in Los Angeles: Artists and Communities Working Together.” Click here for a book summary document.

Inspired by community storytelling workshops, two new murals honor racial justice, cultural equity, and the vibrant spirit of Santa Monica. Artist Karla Diaz has created two new murals that honor and uplift the diverse communities of Santa Monica. The murals, We Are Santa Monica at the Santa Monica Public Library (SMPL), and Youth Powerful Voices at the Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center are on display through Sunday, December 15, 2024. Diaz will speak about We Are Santa Monica in the library courtyard at SMPL on Saturday, October 26 at 2 PM. PEI-CHI KUO Salute to A Palm Tree Curatorial Statement by Venus Lau Kuo’s series of work during her residency at the 18th Street Arts Center intertwines the soft and warm memories of a family trip in her childhood to the masculinity of territorial identities and global mobilities. The Broadway Project is a long-term arts and culture project led by the Quinn Research Center and supported by 18th Street Arts Center and the Santa Monica Public Library. Through public art in Santa Monica, the goal of this project is to develop a Broadway Historic Cultural District that celebrates the Black culture and history of Broadway between 14th and 20th Street in Santa Monica. The Broadway Historic Cultural District Santa Monica’s once sizable Black culture and history are invisible to most people in today’s city landscape. Only vestiges of a thriving Black community that spans over 100 years, remain today, and the landmarks that exist do not neatly fit preservationist standards.
