    If you’ve been wondering what on earth Cork Vinyl is and what it could be used for, then read on! We asked one of our lovely customers, Julie, to road-test (or should that be sew-test?) this unusual fabric. Here’s what she thought: I have been sewing for a couple of years now and first discovered cork early 2018, I now work with cork daily and have a great love for this fabric. First a little information on cork for any newbies to the fabric: Cork can also be known as ‘vegan leather’ because it is seen as the animal friendly alternative to leather produced from thin cork shavings obtained directly from the bark of the cork oak tree.     Stacie is back with another fantastic review of one our popular jersey’s. I’ll let her give you the full scoop … I have been sewing now for about a year, and it’s amazing how quickly I have built up a little ‘stash’ of fabrics! So much so that I put myself on a little self-imposed fabric ban, whilst I worked through some of my stash. But then, a very lovely friend sent me a £20 gift card for 1 st For Fabrics! So, it would have been rude not to! I had two patterns in mind to buy for, the Bettine from Tilly and the Buttons and the Thea dress from Sew Over It. I was very happy to have found the perfect fabrics for both! I purchased 2 meters of the Plain Lightweight 100% Viscose in a beautiful shade of Coral Pink and 2.5 meters of the Super Soft ‘Peachskin’ Brushed Single Knit Jersey in Rose .     2018 is drawing to a close – it has been a FANTASTIC year here at 1st For Fabrics. Since the launch of our website in January, we have been able to connect with more and more customers from around the UK (and indeed, the world!), and we have stocked our shelves with new and exciting ranges of fabrics and independent sewing patterns. Launching the website has been a huge learning curve and we’d like to extend our thanks to you for your patience while we found our feet, for your feedback and for your reactions to our products and services. And to anyone who has placed an order, recommended us or even dropped in for a look – THANK YOU. Sally has taken our nautical-inspired textured striped jersey and transformed it into a elegant Tilly and the Buttons Coco Dress. Read on for Sally’s take on this perfect combo: Pattern: Tilly & The Buttons Coco (Dress Version) Fabric: Poly Spandex Textured Jersey – Black & White Stripe I ordered 2.5 metres of this beautiful textured jersey from 1 st For Fabrics because I have a mild obsession with stripes and also because I thought it would be perfect for the Coco pattern. As always, the fabric arrived beautifully wrapped in pattern paper, with a handwritten note and a spool of cotton, from Julie which added a lovely personal touch.     After a small break we are BACK with our Fabric 101 series. First up, we have Alex who purchased some of our gorgeous organic printed jersey to make up into matching summer dresses for herself and her daughter. I’ll hand over to Alex for all the details on the pattern and the scoop on how she found working with the jersey: I have been planning to make the child and adult versions of the Beachcomber dress by Made for Jack’s Mum since the pattern was released a couple of months ago, as I just cannot resist matching outfits! I fell in love with the grey cloud print cotton spandex from 1st for Fabrics and thought it would be perfect to represent our typical British Summers. I’ve obviously been proved wrong as we having the longest heatwave anyone can remember in years, but I still love this fabric.     Carrie is back with one of her latest makes! We’re so grateful that she wanted to share her top tips using our baby cord. This 100% cotton corduroy comes in a range of colours which you can find HERE – we’ll let Carrie walk you through the rest! I was on the hunt for some needlecord and 1 st For Fabrics had a lovely selection in bright jolly colours! I was tempted by sunny yellow, but I opted for the red! I knew the project I wanted to make, and it was a Tilly and the Buttons Clemence skirt which was suitable for this fabric. It was love at first sight the colour was a vibrant wearable red and the pile was fine and soft to touch. I popped the fabric straight in the wash on a quick 15-minute 30c cycle and air dried. Once dry the fabric required ironing before preparing to cut the fabric. Tip iron on the wrong side to prevent marking the fabric. When cutting my pattern, I ensured that the

    Fabric 101 – Part 3: Emma’s Grecian-style jersey dress We have another great instalment of our fabric review series – this time from Emma, who got in touch with us and sent an image of a Grecian-style drape dress that she wanted to make … a few emails backwards and forwards with photographs and we landed on some beautiful grey marl single knit jersey. Over to Emma for the low-down. I emailed 1st for fabrics with a long list or things I required from a fabric. My requirements: -At least 30% stretch. -Good recovery. -Thin enough to twist and wrap so that excess bulk was not created. -Stable so that I could leave the edges raw. -Nice drape. -A nice colour. Q: Which fabric should I review? A: ANYTHING! From cotton to denim, felt to linen, fleece to crepe and everything in between. It doesn’t matter if the fabric has already been reviewed – it is great to hear experiences from different sewers undertaking different projects.
