- Trump touts war gains at UN, threatens to ‘annihilate’ Iran if no deal
Sep 22, 2026 · original
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday defended his war against Iran before the United Nations General Assembly, saying Tehran was no longer the dominant power it once was in the Middle East. “They were the bully of the Middle East, but they are the bully no more,” Trump said as the UN’s annual high-level debate, attended by leaders from around the world, opened in New York. Trump said he had remained unwavering throughout his political career in his determination to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. “I will never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” he said. Iranian representatives in the assembly hall listened to Trump’s remarks without visible reaction. The United States and Israel jointly launched the war against Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate with attacks across the region. Trump portrayed the military campaign as having inflicted devastating damage o - Ex-SGF, Babachir Lawal, joins NDC

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), three months after quitting the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Lawal defected to the NDC in Abuja on Tuesday, saying he is supporting the party’s presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections. He told the crowd that Nigerians were worried about insecurity, hunger and other challenges, adding that facing the country should support the NDC, “anybody in Nigeria who has the interest of our country at heart and sympathy for the suffering that is ongoing in our country, along with insecurity, hunger, ignorance and disease, will have no choice but to join a party that represents the future and have Peter and Kwankwaso as their candidates. “Every sensible and patriotic Nigerian ought to understand this. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has cut the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by 350 basis points to 23 per cent from 26.5 per cent . This was one of the decisions at the 307th meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in Abuja, which had 11 members in attendance. The committee also recalibrated the Standing Facilities Corridor and retained existing Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR) levels for Deposit Money Banks, Merchant Banks and non-TSA public sector deposits. In its July meeting, the MPC retained benchmark rate at 26.5 per cent. The reduction marks a 350-basis-point adjustment in the CBN’s benchmark interest rate, bringing the MPR from 26.5 per cent to 23 per cent. CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, who disclosed this while reading the communique at the end of the meeting, said the CBN committee also cut the asymmetric corridor around the MPR at+50/-300 basis points. The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reported that a total of 103,375 units of imported vehicles were handled at various Nigerian ports between January and June 2026, representing a 42.5 per cent increase compared with the 72,568 units recorded in the same period in 2025. Managing Director of NPA, Abubakar Dantsoho, disclosed this while speaking during the quarterly meeting of the Port Consultative Council in Lagos. According to him, stakeholders attributed the 42.5 per cent increase in vehicle imports recorded in the first half of 2026 to the reduction in levies on imported vehicles. Dantsoho, who was represented by the Principal Manager, Statistics, Mrs Okenwa Igwebuike, attributed the growth in vehicle handling to transshipment activity at the Ports & Terminal Multiservice Limited Terminal on Tin Can Island Port, adding that it contributed significantly to the remarkable increase re - Two women arrested in Lagos over fake juice factory

A suspected illegal factory producing adulterated “Barkas Juice” in Badagry, Lagos State, has been uncovered and two women suspected to be in connection with the operation has been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command. The Lagos State Commandant of the NSCDC, Adedotun Keshinro, who disclosed this said the suspects, aged 48 and 50, were arrested after about five days by NSCDC operatives in collaboration with soldiers. Keshinro said the suspects use water, synthetic flavourings, industrial sweeteners, artificial colourants and chemical preservatives to allegedly process the Barkas Juice, with investigators saying no real fruit was used. He said from some youths attempted to prevent the security personnel from accessing the premises during the operation carried out from Saturday, September 19 to Sunday, September 20. Nigeria’s fixed internet connections rose by 1,375 per cent or more than 14-fold over five years. The rise indicates the rapid expansion of location-based broadband services in Africa’s largest telecommunications market. Fixed internet refers to internet connections associated with a specific location, such as a home, office, or business premises, rather than mobile connections used through cellular networks. This category covers a different segment of Nigeria’s internet market from the much larger pool of mobile subscriptions, with operators providing services through technologies such as fibre and other fixed broadband infrastructure. Operators active in Nigeria’s fixed broadband market include FiberOne Broadband, ipNX Nigeria, Broadbased Communications, Ngcom, Layer3, Choice2Mobile, Swift Networks, Spectranet, MainOne, Dotmac and Cobranet, among others. Sep 22, 2026 · original
The Federal Government has ruled out any increase in electricity tariffs, noting that it is focused on improving electricity supply and strengthening the financial and physical foundations of the power sector rather than imposing additional costs on consumers. Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this at a media parley in Abuja to mark his first 100 days in office, where he noted that the electricity sector is constrained across the entire value chain, with the challenges affecting power supply and increasing the burden on Nigerians. According to him, the problems are interconnected and cannot be solved by simply adding new generation capacity. Tegbe said the administration was working to address the sector’s long-standing debt, revenue leakages, metering gaps and infrastructure constraints. He said his first 100 days, covering June 8 to September 16, had largely focused on diagnos - Refining opportunity was open to all, they missed it – Dangote
Sep 22, 2026 · original
Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has dismissed accusations that he is running a monopoly in Nigeria’s oil refining sector, insisting that the opportunity to invest was available to everyone, including foreign investors, but they missed it. Dangote stated this in an interview with Al Jazeera. Comparing his approach to business with that of a footballer who remains focused on the game despite distractions from the crowd, he said criticism would not stop him from pursuing his vision for Africa’s economic development. “Have you ever seen a footballer looking at the audience? He has to continue looking at the ball. If I’m Messi, for example, I’m kicking the ball and I’m looking at the audience looking or hailing me, I will miss the ball.” “Those people, no matter what you do, you won’t make everybody happy. So if I’m going to make my continent great, and people want to call me monopo - Nigerian stock market valuation hits all-time high of N162.39 trillion

Sep 22, 2026 · original
The Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has said Nigeria will not be a soft target for predatory litigation and arbitration. Fagbemi made this known in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, while reacting to Nigeria’s victory in the International Arbitration instituted by Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited (Sunrise) and its principal, Leno Adesanya. He said the verdict was a complete and resounding vindication of Nigeria’s position that Sunrise’s entire claim should be totally rejected. On September 17, a Tribunal of the International Chamber of Commerce, Paris pronounced the landmark victory for Nigeria against Sunrise. “It began with the claim of an alleged Build-Operate-Transfer contract in 2003, followed by court proceedings in 2007, and continuing through further arbitrations. “The financing of the Mambilla Project by the China Export-Import Bank was expr
