Tallahassee already has nearly every ingredient needed to support a signature Oktoberfest—it simply hasn t put them together. Oktoberfest in Munich is dominated by six major breweries. The tiny city that forms for a few weeks serves beer to world travelers and locals over the course of roughly three weeks, generating approximately 1 billion in economic impact. Oktoberfest was born from a confluence of love, sports, and saving all the beer. On October 12, 1810, the citizens of Munich were invited to a wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The grand festival featured horse races on the fields outside Munich, called Theresienwiese, meaning Therese s Meadow, to honor the bride. The festivities were so momentous, newspapers called the wedding celebration Octoberfest, and the party continued the following year; however, the events were still centered around horse racing and agricultural exhibitions, rather than beer. The game of disc golf came about in the 60s, played casually and unofficially using object courses made up of trees, water fountains, and light posts as targets. An official Disc Pole Hole was invented by Ed Headrick in 1976, and the game began gaining traction nationally. Still, disc golf courses were scarce, and many communities continued to play object courses, including Tallahassee. Lofty Pursuits business owner Greg Cohen recalls those days fondly. It was sort of the prehistory of disc golf—we were using lampposts with electrical tape on it, Cohen recalls.
