  1. WP Book Club Week 1
    Sep 1, 2025 · original
If you signed up on the original post , you will also receive this info in an email. For week one of a WordPress Book Club , we will be discussing the Preface and Chapter 1. Introduction . To start the club, we are going to do introductions. I’ll ask everyone to share their name and how long they have been involved in open source. We’ll do this popcorn style . Next I’ll quickly review some norms for this club: Make Space for each other — Be conscious of how much you are speaking and encourage others to speak as well. While cooperative overlapping is a conversation style that is natural to some, it’s one we should avoid in this context. Approach this club with enthusiastic collaboration — This is a phrase that I stole from the preface and is one of the ways that the author describes the unique culture of open source. In this context the phrase means to me that everyone is coming with a po
  2. A WordPress Book Club
    Aug 20, 2025 · original
At a previous job, we had an engineering book club. Once a week we would meet and discuss a chapter of a book. It was a good opportunity to hear multiple perspectives on an author’s work, to see who agreed with the author and where people thought the author was off-base. I would like to bring this concept to WordPress, especially to fellow Core Contributors. For the first book, we will be reading Producing Open Source Software by Karl Fogel. This is a book that has greatly influenced my perspective on open source and software development in general. The club will meet on Google Meet on Tuesdays at 16:00 UTC (edit: This was originally 15:00 UTC. Moving to not conflict with recurring meetings of multiple WordPress teams) for one hour with the following schedule: 2 September 2025: Preface and Chapter 1. Introduction 9 September 2025: Chapter 2. Getting Started 16 September 2025: Chapter 3.
  3. Sponsor a WordPress Core Committer at WordCamp US
    Aug 12, 2025 · original
edit: Thank you to Dan Knauss , Andy Fragen , Jeffrey Paul and two individuals who wish to remain anonymous, I am now fully funded for WordCamp US! WordCamp US is coming up in two weeks and I’m looking forward to seeing all the other contributors, most of whom I haven’t seen since WordCamp US last year. In addition to all of the education that takes place at WordCamps, these are the main opportunities that committers (the folks who make the decisions on what code is ready to be shipped with WordPress) have to get to know each other and chat about ideas we have. This year I’m serving as one of the leads for the Core Table at Contributor Day. It’s been a few years since I’ve been a lead on contributor day, and I’m excited at the prospect of helping new folks contribute for the first time while also helping existing contributors have an impact on WordPress. I’m also organizing the (largely
  4. Four Short Things – 24 July 2025

Inspired by O’reilly’s Four Short Links , here are some of the things I’ve seen, read, or watched recently. The featured image is generated from midjourney 7 based on the prompt Create a circular logo for a brand called “Four Short Things” and place it on a white background. The logo should feature the numeral 4 prominently. White Sox Start 5-1 after All-Star Break When your last ten shows you are 6-4, you have to wonder if your team has moved on from the worst team in baseball. I would say they are now bordering on being a regular bad team, like the A’s, Nationals, or Orioles. Himari performing Carmen Fantasy I don’t think I had seen a symphony perform in person in 25 years until Sunday when I saw the Chicago Symphony Orchestra perform with Himari at Ravinia. There is a vibe to sitting outside, having a picnic with friends, and listening to a virtuoso on the violin. It’s pushed me towar

I can take a risk. Where does that come from? I honestly think it comes from foolishness. O’Keefe, Brian. “ What I’ve Learned: Bob Odenkirk .” Esquire, Summer 2025 The post Bob Odenkirk on risk appeared first on Aaron Jorbin .
  6. My May And June in WordPress
    Jul 3, 2025 · original
My May and June in WordPress focused on helping get 6.8.2 set up for success and gardening old trac tickets. This was my first time putting together the squad for a minor release that I wasn’t going to be a member of. I coordinated with a few active committers, team reps, and the 6.8.0 release coordinators to review the folks who volunteered to help lead a maintenance release. The first step was identifying from the volunteers one person who could be the primary lead. This involved reaffirming that people could still make the commitment. Once the first person was identified, we looked for folks to compliment them and I confirmed their availability. After that, I announced it and the 6.8.2 team got off to a quick start getting ready for the next release of WordPress. I’ve also been spending some time looking at some long neglected tickets. In order to not feel stuck, I’ve moved between a

  8. Some initial questions about FAIR
    Jun 9, 2025 · original
Congratulations to the FAIR team on thier launch. 1.0 is the lonliest number , so getting to to this milestone is something for them to celebrate and I hope the team behind it feels great about getting this far. One of the best parts of getting to a public release is that you start getting feedback from real users. Some of that is coming out and I’m sure I will have some to add, at this point I don’t yet have a solid opinion on FAIR. What I do have are some questions I haven’t found the answer to while reading the protocol documentation . I am hoping someone can either point me to the documentation for each of these or answer directly while I continue to digest as much as I can: How does someone report a bad actor in a federated repository? If I discover someone who is acting in bad faith, do I need to track down every discovery aggregator, inform them independetly, and have each do its
  9. Happy 22nd Birthday WordPress
    May 27, 2025 · original
I don’t know about you, but WordPress is feeling 22. I am celebrating by helping WordPress do what it has done nearly every day for 22 years: getting a little better (and being ok making mistakes in the process). The post Happy 22nd Birthday WordPress appeared first on Aaron Jorbin .
  10. My March And April in WordPress
    May 5, 2025 · original
My March and April in WordPress started focused on helping with 6.8. This release turned out to be fairly smooth, in large part due to the community of folks who helped test beforehand. As often is the case, some folks waited until the general release to start testing which meant that a few bugs needed attention right away and led me to leading 6.8.1 In addition to 6.8.1, my other focus has been on the questions surrounding releases of WordPress. I first participated in and then assisted with the publication of the notes from a call between core committers and project leadership. With the change to the release cadence, I also shared my thoughts on what should go into 6.8 minor releases . With the change in the release cadence, I’m hoping to spend more time on scrubbing tickets and helping others contribute by improving documentation and providing feedback. Even though major releases are
