Measurement Certifications

Over the past year NRPP has been revalidating its measurement and mitigation certification programs. Revalidation occurs at regular intervals to ensure that NRPP’s certifications assesses candidates against essential, job-related competencies. It is also a key element of ISO/IEC 17024 accreditation. The revalidation process involved regular meetings of committees of subject matter experts to review the content and format of NRPP’s certification examinations and all requirements for initial certification and recertification. The process included a validation survey, which many industry members completed. Survey results were used to guide the development of the 2025 programs. NRPP’s Certification Council voted in November to approve the 2025 measurement programs (RMFT & RMP). Revised – September 2025 The President’s FY 2026 Budget proposed to eliminate State Indoor Radon Grants (SIRG) indicating that” responsibility for funding local indoor radon reduction programs is best placed with states and localities.” The House and Senate appropriations bills for FY26, which have been passed by the respective chambers’ full appropriations committees, both propose to fund SIRG at a level comparable to this year. The President’s FY 2026 Budget proposed to eliminate the Indoor Air: Radon Program , claiming that “all applicable statutory work ( e.g., Toxic Substances Control Act, Clean Air Act, etc.) will be accomplished in other programs within the Indoor Air and Radiation Program Area.” There is no evidence that other radiation programs have the capacity to lead the Radon Program, and it’s unlikely to happen with the President’s proposed 49% cut – or the House bill’s 49%

and ACTION ALERT: Save the EPA Radon Grants and Program The House Appropriations bill affecting EPA is going to be finalized next week. EPA’s radon programs constitute the nation’s primary defense against radon exposure risk, ensuring that the states, tribes, and EPA continue to alert the public to the need to test and mitigate if needed. The President’s budget has proposed to eliminate them. Please contact your Congressional Representative – through social media, by phone, with an email – to ask him or her to ensure that the EPA radon programs continue and are fully funded by the FY 26 Interior- Environments Appropriations Bill next week, despite the President’s budget recommendation for their elimination. Voting for the 2024 Indoor Environment Association election opened August 30 and concluded Monday, September 16 at 1 PM ET. During this period, members exercised their voting rights to elect one of the Association’s Vice Presidents and five National Directors for two-year terms, and one additional National Director for a one-year term to complete the term of a seat vacated by resignation. The Indoor Environments Association held its second Music Video Contest in 2025. The contest challenge was to create a short ( three minutes) music video using an existing song, changing the original lyrics to words that promote radon awareness and/or testing. The contest was advertised through the IEA monthly e-newsletter Rn Biz and social media. A panel of three judges viewed and rated the videos. The Grand Prize winner, Rocky Mountain Chapter of IEA president, Rachel Peterson, was announced by Executive Director Diane Swecker on October 28, at the Indoor Environments: Radon and Vapor Intrusion Symposium in Fort Worth The winning video is available on IEA’s YouTube channel @stopradon . Seventeen radon advocates and professionals met with more than 20 Kentucky lawmakers for Radon Advocacy Day on January 23 rd . For the first time, Kentucky Radon Advocacy Day was held as a stand-alone event focused on radon-related advocacy. Strategically during National Radon Action Month, with this event, the Kentucky Chapter kick-started the year and revived efforts to unite in the fight for radon issues for the benefit of members, consumers, and ultimately public health. Right out of the gate, members of the organization mingled with members of the General Assembly. A legislative breakfast was held in a cozy room in the Capitol Annex building. 2023 ANSI/AARST Soil Gas and Radon Standards Released With thanks to the leadership of the AARST Consortium on National Standards , American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST) is releasing the 2023 versions of eight ANSI/AARST Standards. These standards have been revised by their respective all-volunteer committees to, for example, include changes recommended by subject matter experts, make edits necessary to increase clarity, and achieve harmonization across standards. Although the 2023 standards have an effective date of December 1, 2023, they are available on the Consortium website and recommended for immediate use. Consolidations.
