  5. Remembering Dr. Jane Goodall and Her Enduring Impact on Conservation
    Oct 2, 2025 · original
We join with those in animal care, conservation, and zoological communities across the globe to mourn the loss of a true pioneer in wildlife research and advocacy — Dr. Jane Goodall. Her passing leaves a deep void, but her legacy will forever guide our work. Dr. Goodall’s early field studies at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania upended many scientific preconceptions. She showed the world that chimpanzees are capable of tool use, complex social relationships, emotion, and distinct personalities — discoveries that helped reshape humanity’s understanding of our closest relatives. Beyond her groundbreaking research, she championed an inclusive model of conservation — one that emphasized the interdependence of humans, animals, and landscapes. Through the Jane Goodall Institute and her Roots & Shoots youth program, she empowered generations to act locally for the global good. To all of us

  9. “My Grandfather: The Zoo Keeper” Premiering at the 50th Conference
    Jun 20, 2025 · original
In the late 1960’s, without the help of computers and the internet, seven men set out to connect zoos across the U.S. for the first time and transform the field of animal care. It was a feat met with roadblocks and resistance, but thanks to their efforts it would grow into one of the largest zoological organizations in the world. This documentary traces the bold beginnings of the American Association of Zookeepers, showcasing the incredible history of the organization and the animal care profession. Along the way, we take viewers behind the scenes at iconic zoos, where keepers are more than employees — they’re animal advocates, problem-solvers, and sometimes—gibbon impersonators. Yes, there are stories of animal escapes and the dangers of the job. But this isn’t Tiger King. This is about the people who rarely make headlines — the keepers who dedicate their lives, on and off the clock, to

    Dec 12, 2024 · original
PHOENIX, AZ, Dec. 11, 2024 – The American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK) unveils a new brand, including a new logo, reflecting the organization’s focus on animal care professionals. The new logo, website and chapter resources will unite the organization throughout the United States, Canada and North America. Very well known in the animal care community is the signature symbol of AAZK–the rhino. In keeping with this tradition, the world famous animal horns remain in the new logo but with the addition of a snake and a very important nod to aquarists is a shark fin. The new AAZK colors reflect the diversity of members, animals and communities in which our members work to care for the world’s animal populations. “As an animal care professional myself, I am proud of our new logo and updated branding. Our new look truly reflects the members we serve,” remarked Board President, Nicole Pepo. F
