To give some context to this illustrious award, please remember that Mark Connelly was one of the original surgeons certified by the ABFPRS in 1991 who began serving on the Credentials Committee in 1998 and was appointed Chairman from 2003 to 2009. During that time, Mark loved helping applicants understand what it takes to not only become an ABFPRS diplomate—he also made sure surgeons appreciated the high and exacting standards ABFPRS certification represents once it is achieved. Dr. Katherine Hicks FPT October 2025 Dr. Katherine Hicks, from Greenville, South Carolina, earned the highest score on the 2025 ABFPRS examination in Washington, D.C., and will be honored with the Jack R. Anderson Award for Scholastic Excellence at the AAFPRS Fall Meeting in Los Angeles, California. As is true with other ABFPRS diplomates, Dr. Hicks was still making up her mind about pursuing a career in medicine when she was in high school. “When I was a senior, I was pretty sure I wanted to choose a major that would give me some flexibility in case I changed my mind. Kontis, M.D., ABFPRS President SUBJECT: 2025 ANNUAL REPORT—ABFPRS KEEPS GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” Abraham Lincoln It just doesn’t seem possible that I took the ABFPRS examination over 30 years ago as a requirement for completion of my AAFPRS fellowship with Drs. Ira Papel and John Frodel. When I sat for the exam in 1994, the ABFPRS was just getting off the ground (ABFPRS was officially created in 1986) and our Board’s future, unlike today, was anything but secure. But here we are—38 years later, and our Board is preparing for another record-breaking year in 2025. The ABFPRS is proud to announce that Dr. Ritchie A.L. Younger has been recognized as the Schoenrock award winner for 2024. Dr. Younger has served as an ABFPRS examiner and been a stalwart member of the ABFPRS Credentials Committee for over 28 years. Since most Credentials Committee members review an average of 12 incredibly lengthy applications for ABFPRS certification every year, Dr. Younger can be credited with reviewing over 336 applications during his time on the committee. Application reviews are a critical part of the ABFPRS certification cycle and are the determining factor in the Board’s decision to award certification. As anyone on the Credentials Committee can attest, Dr. Younger’s detailed application reviews are matched only by his self-deprecating humor, as seen in his biography below.
