Sharing on behalf of Highways England Highways England are resurfacing A34 Southbound from Peartree to Marcham Interchange from 17th August 2026 for a 6 week period. Traffic will be diverted down from Oxford to Berinsfield and then along the A415 over Abingdon Bridge and through to Marcham Interchange. Tribute to Former Mayor and Councillor Nigel Trippett

It is with great sadness that Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council has learned of the passing of former Councillor and Mayor Nigel Trippett, who died peacefully at home on 14 July 2026, surrounded by his family. Nigel served as Mayor of Abingdon in 1980/81 and made a lasting contribution to the civic life and traditions of the town. During his mayoral year, he presented the town with a model of the Abingdon Bunk railway engine as his civic gift. The model remains on display in the museum, where it continues to be enjoyed by visitors. Nigel also played a memorable role in celebrating one of Abingdon’s most treasured traditions. To commemorate the 80th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, he led a special Bun Throwing celebration before travelling to Clarence House to present the Queen Mother with one of Abingdon’s famous buns. Abbey Buildings – closure of passageway from Thames St to Checker Walk

From 21st July 2026, the popular and highly used short cut and passageway ( historically named The Slype) from Thames Street to Checker Walk by the Abbey Buildings is closed for health and safety reasons. This is whilst the refurbishment of the Abbey buildings is underway. Scaffolding will also appear next week. It is expected that it will be closed for at least a year. It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of Councillor Margaret Crick, who passed away on Friday 10th July 2026. Margaret had been in poor health in recent months but nevertheless her passing has come as a great shock to all her friends and colleagues at the Town Council and in the wider community of Abingdon. Margaret was first elected to the Town Council in May 2007 for the Caldecott Ward, and since May 2011 has represented the Dunmore ward. During her time on the Town Council she served on many committees including the Environment, Amenities and Infrastructure committee, the Planning committee, and the Museum sub-committee. Margaret also served as Mayor of Abingdon in 2018-19. She was also elected to the Vale of White District Council in a By-election in September 2014 and served as a District Councillor until she stood down in May 2023. It is a measure of the respec

This post is aimed at providing updates about David Wilson Homes (DWH’s) Highways Works Package 5 (HWP5) Oxford Road / Dunmore Road / Twelve Acre Drive roundabout improvement works. On the 26 May, Bellway successfully commenced Highways Works Package 4 (HWP4) and completed the first stage of works. On the 8 June, David Wilson Homes’s (DWH) contractor commenced HWP5 drainage works. This work is expected to take 4-weeks. Rather than operating split shifts on a single section of drainage, the contractor has opted to deploy two gangs working concurrently on separate sections. This approach is considered more productive overall, as it provides extended working coverage across the scheme, equating to approximately 18-working hours per day per drainage run, compared to around 12-hours per day if a split shift arrangement were used on a single section.
