May 12, 2026 The American Board of Pathology (ABPath) is pleased to sponsor an ABMS Scholars Program research opportunity focused on competency-based assessment in autopsy pathology training. ABPath is seeking applicants to conduct a feasibility and efficacy study of a competency-based hospital autopsy assessment tool designed to evaluate pathology resident performance across the full spectrum of hospital-based autopsy-related tasks and training milestones. Eligible applicants include early-career physicians and junior faculty with an interest in autopsy in pathology and graduate medical education. Fellows, particularly Forensic Pathology fellows or those with a strong interest in autopsy, are encouraged to apply. Updates to Retired Status for Diplomates

| POLICY UPDATE TAMPA, Fla., February 19, 2026 — The American Board of Pathology (ABPath) is updating how diplomate status will be recorded for individuals who are no longer in active practice. These changes ensure ABPath maintains accurate records and correctly reports diplomates’ current practice and licensure status. Automatic Update for Certain Diplomates Effective July 1, 2026, ABPath will automatically update the status to “Retired” for diplomates who meet both of the following criteria: Received primary certification in 1975 or earlier Do not currently hold an active medical license To ensure our records remain accurate, please contact us by July 1, 2026, if you received primary certification in 1975 or earlier but are still in active practice. Diplomates transitioned to Retired status under this policy will not be required to meet additional retired status requirements. Voluntary

In Memoriam Deborah E. Powell, MD 1939 – 2025 November 7, 2025 – The American Board of Pathology (ABPath) is very saddened to hear about the loss of Dr. Deborah E. Powell , former Trustee and President of the ABPath, who passed away on October 30th, 2025, at the age of 85. Dr. Powell served as an ABPath Trustee from 1995 to 2006 and held several leadership positions, including Treasurer (2001–2002), Vice President (2003), and President (2004). During her tenure, she brought to the Board her deep expertise in medical education and thoughtful leadership, helping to inform ABPath’s efforts to uphold excellence in board certification. She remained a respected voice and supporter of ABPath, returning on occasion to share her insight on competency-based medical education and its role in shaping the future of physician training.
