    The Academy of Urbanism Awards this year will focus on the people who have made an outstanding contribution to our towns and cities. Having spent 15 years focusing on awards for place, and uncertain about the restrictions that the pandemic will place on this year’s awards, we have decided that in 2021 we will focus on people. The five categories cover everything from politicians and public officials to community activists, professionals, academics and young people. These are the people that we have met and been inspired-by over the last 15 years of visiting great places. We know that towns and cities are the work of many hands and it is invidious to single-out one person. However at the same time we have met lots of people without whom a place would not have achieved what it has. People who have gone above and beyond what was expected of them, who have shown drive, imagination and leader

    Day one of the AoU Congress is now done. The aim of the day was to meet old and new friends; to recreate what are some of the best bits of an in-person Congress – the bits in between sessions where connections are made. And we welcomed to Edinburgh an online audience of urbanists from as far as India, the East Coast of the US, France and the Netherlands, all eager to be a part of the learning that Congress brings. There is still much to come! So if you haven’t, please see our programme for the AoU Congress and join us online tomorrow (Thursday 17 June) to learn from Edinburgh and Friday (18 June) to learn from some incredible international examples.   5. AoU Congress 2021: Call for Papers

    This year, The Academy of Urbanism is running its annual Congress (virtually from Edinburgh) on the theme of Responsive Cities: Adapting under pressure . We will be considering what the contemporary pressures are, and how cities are adapting to these in order to create healthier, happier, safer spaces and places. Through this call for papers, we are inviting AoU members of all ages and backgrounds to put forward proposals to give short presentations. The Congress will take place online over 16-18 June 2021, with the call for papers session taking place on 18 June between 11am-1pm (precise times might change).     A huge thank you to all of you who were involved or attended the AoU Congress Fringe 3×3 Series, which concluded this week. The three sessions took in speaker responses to the themes of Romance, Everyday, Play …and the City. On behalf of the AoU, our thanks to AoU members Nick Walker, Paul Morsley, Lorraine Landels, Diarmaid Lawlor, Henry Mellen, Eva Voulgaridou, and Tom Butler-Weeks, for their thoughtful curation and planning of the sessions, and to Alan Miller for poster design.   10. Modular community housing project named winner of Clarion Housing Group’s William Sutton Prize

    A modular housing factory with social purpose has been crowned the winner of The William Sutton Prize for Placemaking and Affordable Housing Design at an awards ceremony which took place virtually on 25 March. Speaking at the event, judging panel member Biljana Savic, Director of The Academy of Urbanism, said “Once again it has been my absolute pleasure to judge the William Sutton Prize for Excellence in Placemaking and Affordable Housing Design on behalf of the Academy of Urbanism”. Ecomotive and SNUG Homes’ winning proposal is for a construction and training hub in Bristol that will enable residents to co-produce eco-friendly, modular housing in response to local needs. The project will also provide apprenticeship, volunteering and employment opportunities, as well as self-build training and support for community-led housing initiatives.     Between 4-16 May, Milton Keynes Council (MKC), Living Archive MK and Pooleyville are supporting the delivery of an online programme of talks, screenings, events and activities celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Homeworld ‘81 – a significant and nationally important Housing Expo. Commissioned by Milton Keynes Development Corporation, Homeworld ’81 firmly established Milton Keynes as a leader in innovative, sustainable housing design. This free online programme will explore innovation then and how it relates to Milton Keynes now, with the new town’s aspirations to become the UK’s first carbon neutral city by 2050. In addition, Milton Keynes Council (MKC) in partnership with Pooleyville welcomes you to their annual UK New Towns Sharing Day. All members of the Academy are welcome to join the groups and contribute their time and skills. Membership and Sponsorship Working Group The aim of this group is to help guide the strategy for growing the network of individuals and organisations that make up the Academy, as well as the financial and in-kind support that is the basis on which activities can take place. In the short-term the group is looking for help with analysis of our recent member survey, and longer-term helping to identify and nurture sponsors and members.
