    This fall, the historic waterfront of Georgetown, South Carolina , will once again come alive with wooden boats, traditional craftsmanship and maritime heritage during the 37th Annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show , October 17–18, 2026 . For one weekend, wooden boats of all shapes and sizes will line Front Street and the Harborwalk, from handcrafted canoes and skiffs to classic sailboats and beautifully restored powerboats.     Thanks to everyone who joined us for the 2026 ACBS Vintage Boat Week in Port Huron, Michigan – and to the Michigan Chapter for being such gracious hosts. Jubilee 2021 22-foot Hacker Design Replica Gentlemen’s Racer Philppe Bougie, Manotick Chapter It was always a thrill to go for a ride in wooden boats as a kid, says Manotick Chapter member Phil Bougie. And in his mid-20s, after building a wooden kayak, he decided to build a vintage boat. After hours of marveling at plans purchased from Wooden Boat Magazine, one stood out. The boat was built from a Nelson Zimmer plan which is very similar to the Hacker Fleetfoot plan. A beautiful boat! But, Phil decided to make a few small design changes.     The cruisers cruised with smiles all around during the ACBS pre-events at the 2026 ACBS Vintage Boat Week. We visited the site of the original Chris-Craft factory, toured two museums, two prestigious yacht clubs, enjoyed fantastic restaurants and heard lectures about captaining ships and Port Huron history.     The Lake Champlain Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society proudly raised a glass to a true icon of our community, Gene Porter, as he marked a landmark 90th birthday! Gene Porter and True North on Lake Champlain (Photo credit: Holly Weber) Gene’s love for powerboating traces back to his early years raised in the southeastern Adirondacks and Watertown, New York, with fond memories waterskiing behind an 18-foot Lyman outboard at Grenell Island in the 1000 Islands. That lifelong passion has taken him across the country, trailing his classic boats to countess ACBS boat shows, rendezvous, and workshops. Throughout his decades with ACBS, Gene has been a major contributor to ACBS and the Lake Champlain Chapter.     By Don Leutz, Northern California/Lake Tahoe Chapter One of the most important safety items that antique and classic boaters should carry on board with them is a communication device in case of emergency. Most people today have a cell phone. In fact, in any given boat, there may be several cell phones available. Cell phones are especially convenient for conversations with other people on land and to make dining reservations, etc., but the Coast Guard and other search-and-rescue agencies cannot necessarily determine your location from an emergency cell phone call. Cell phone coverage is limited strictly by the locations of Cell Towers on land, so service may be marginal on the water. The most effective communications device, and the first choice for emergency calls, especially for lake and Delta boaters is the VHF (Very High Frequency) Radio.     By Carmen DeLeo, Mid-Atlantic Chapter Another enjoyable outing is in the books for the Mid-Atlantic Chapter, this time shared with the fine members and friends of our neighboring Chesapeake Bay Chapter. Mike & Dee’s 2023 Grady White Freedom 223. For some of our members, the day began around 7:00 AM on July 11, with a little more than an hour’s drive to Chesapeake City and the historic Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. We arrived around 8:45 AM and, thanks to an organized launch, had all of our boats in the water and secured at Docks A and B by approximately 9:00 AM. Mark Marsillo’s 1958 Century Resorter. Dan and his younger brother, Gene, made the Lake as well as their father’s nearby Golden Gate Winery their personal playground during their adolescence. They had constant access to water and the woodshop within the winery. A young 12 year old Dan built his first boat at the winery with his little brother helping. Dan came by his competitive nature genetically. As a youth, his father, Dan Sr., was a national speed roller skating champion. Was it any wonder that son, Dan, would be racing boats competitively by age 15? Dan progressed rapidly through the outboard divisions and into the inboard class, and with each change came a newer and bigger boat with more power.     By Bill Calliet, Smith Mountain Lake Chapter Metal fasteners have played a critical role in boatbuilding for centuries, evolving alongside advances in metallurgy, woodworking, and marine engineering. From hand-forged iron nails used in ancient vessels to today’s precision-manufactured stainless steel screws and silicon bronze bolts, the choice of fastener has always been influenced by strength, durability, corrosion resistance, and the demands of the marine environment. Early wooden boats were often held together with wooden pegs, known as treenails or trunnels, combined with rope lashings and animal fibers. As metalworking improved, blacksmiths began producing wrought iron nails, spikes, and bolts. Iron offered greater strength than wood and allowed larger vessels to be built, but it came with a significant drawback. Exposure to saltwater caused iron to rust, weakening the fasteners and
