    Just finished this little guy and I'm so happy with how he turned out. Started out as random whittling at a craft brunch and he just emerged from the wood as I followed my fun. Then I drilled holes in the feet up to the eyes for the LEDs and put him on a little base made of a drink lid, a cardboard coffee cup, some cardboard from a box, some masking tape, and hot glue, and got all the wiring hooked up. I made all the little decorations out of polymer clay including his buckle and buttons and attached those with hot glue, painted everything with acrylic paint and then gave him a couple of coats of spray on lacquer to seal everything. I've been doing a bunch of stuff with 3d printing recently but that doesn't feel like crafting in the same way so I feel like I need to have another second thing I'm working on while I'm doing the 3d printing projects that is entirely made by my hands.     During the Spring of 2026 a movement appeared online of young women building cyberdecks, hand built personal computing devices, and especially constructing them in playful feminine ways from makeup cases, toys, bags etc. It was connected to the ongoing movement to reclaim tech and media from giant cloud corporations. Watching these videos was incredible and inspiring and the fact that it was other women at the center of this movement was enough to get me to finally go ahead and build a cyberdeck of my own. The build is an Orange Pi 4 Pro with an 5 inch hdmi screen, and a wireless USB keyboard/touchpad combo, and an off the shelf powerbank. It has a USB-C charging port, a USB-A port for accessories, a simple power switch at the top, hexagonal grids and a mini fan for ventilation, and leaves the header pins on the OrangePi exposed so I can use it for prototyping and hardware development pr

    A friend recently had their seventh birthday and they've recently been getting into Pokemon for the first time with Let's Go Eevee. I'm not sure they've seen enough different pokemon yet to have settled on a long term favorite so for their birthday I decided to make them a pokeball, plush so they can throw it around and with a sound mechanism for the appropriate audio effects. # ashplushie # punkcrafts # punkplushies

    @Farbs@mastodon.social I think once I properly internalized the idea that humans aren't rational creatures, that the verbal rational mind is a presentation layer that most of the time is creating post-hoc rationalization for actions and ideas with much more emotional, instinctual, and complex internal origins, this all became a lot easier. They're often not capable of arguing discussing in good faith even if they wanted to because they're deceiving themselves with their rationalizations. It took me a lot of help from years of therapy to be able to do this less to myself and so when talking to others I don't assume they've had that help and if I genuinely want to engage with them I do the work to find their underlying emotional and experiential motivations to connect with and address, otherwise I keep them at a safe arm's distance.

    What does everyone else do with their knicknacks? Little toys or figurines, bag and phone charms that are nice but you're not going to put them on your bag or phone, pins and badges you don't wear but still like, etc? Right now I have a bunch of mine in a box but that definitely feels like knickknack jail where they go to be forgotten.

    Honestly, it's wild but I think that the idea of AI becoming conscious and super intelligent and taking over the world and destroying it was wishful thinking. Every time an "ai" "breaks containment" in the news I realize that the real threat is the machine taking over the world and destroying it without ever becoming conscious or intelligent. It shouldn't really have been surprising looking at the caliber of people already doing the same. Really the idea it would have to become intelligent to take over was an illusion created by the myth of meritocracy. All it ever really needed was the ability to take actions unaudited and a lack of moral restraint, like the humans.

    Thinking this morning about the poem Warning by Jenny Joseph and the way that the women of my generation around me have all been so eager to declare themselves old women, or describe themselves with words like "nana-core", etc. While society devalues and marginalizes older women, many millennial women and even some gen Z women I know have been quick to adopt the mantle, at least as part of a bouquet of identities we festoon our selves with, as a way of trying to escape both the violence of being valued for the youthfulness of our bodies, and the constraints of the performance of womanhood in general. Instead we see that the identity of the elderly woman, as someone society no longer has any use for, allows for comfort, mischief, joy, and often community, and we seek to claim that freedom to live for ourselves.     There was a chat today where the term "socialized male" or "male socialization" came up quite innocently and it was apparent that it's not obvious the way that phrasing often hurts trans women (I'm going to talk about transfem experience here, transmasc folks experience similar but also notably different violence from terms like "female socialization"). It's a phrasing that is used by TERFs to say that our experiences of being treated like boys, either instead of or in conjunction with our bodies, make us in some way immutably male and therefore dangerous and should not be allowed into women's spaces or communities. It's a tempting argument. Certainly as closeted trans girls we're treated as boys and given certain messages and opportunities, often encouraged and uplifted in ways that cis girls aren't, and the violence of gendered socialization that is inflicted on us is a masculine one t

    I used to suggest Notion as a simpler alternative to Jira/Confluence because the UX was just so much better, but now both have fuckin AI bullshit built in. Does anyone have suggestions for a wiki/task management combo (or two really great separate tools) that are either corpos or open source projects that have taken active anti-AI stances?

    Another craft project from last christmas is this # AshPlushie backpack that I made for a loved one. I'd been trying to make it for several years with several false starts of getting most of the project done before realizing major flaws in my design, approach, or materials. The final product is completely made from scratch, internal construction and all and has an internal laptop sleeve and pairs of D-rings for adjustable straps with arms and legs on the straps and claws and teeth, two sets of three eyes, floppy ears, a ridge down it's back, and, completely unintentionally, some caked up ass cheeks. As far as # punkcrafts projects go I'm glad I took the time to get this one right. It's one of the best # punkplushies I've made, though I'm glad to have it finished so I can go back to working on smaller ones.

    The end of January marked 10 years since the beginning of my medical gender transition and I decided to use the opportunity to have a big celebration with friends and loved ones. I decided to indulge my desire to get to be a princess for the evening and also to invite all my friends into a safe space to experiment and play with gender presentation so the rules were cis folks were required to be in drag to attend, while everyone else was allowed to play with gender presentation however they liked. Everyone really put the genuine effort in and bunch of friends also secretly organised to decorate the space like a trans/wedding themed high school prom night without my knowing. The whole night was completely magical and I just keep coming back to how incredibly thankful I am to be so loved and supported by such amazing, wonderful, fun, strong people.

    After learning that some indoor plants benfit from being shaken to simulate wind, I decided to automate the process and built this plant shaking machine aka "WobbleBot" as a Christmas gift for a dear friend with a green thumb. The motor is from an impact drill from a thrift store, the wire basket was from a homewares store as was the mop handle that I cut for the axle and the plastic storage container that protects the motor. The rest was spare bits of wood, a few screws, a bunch of zip ties and a coat of paint. # punkcrafts

    Finally finished rolling the last of the stones for this project. I actually started this while I was sick with food poisoning and then Covid this summer. The burning of the lines on the board was very meditative while I couldn't think straight. Once I had it together I coated it in beeswax, cut a little leather strap clasp from an old belt, and rolled stones from polymer clay. I find that the size of these stones and the grid are a bit awkward to play with, small to pick up with clumsy fingers. Now I understand why standard boards have grids and pieces of a certain size, but I'm still very proud of this board as a thing I made for myself. # punkcrafts

    As I age I want to grow into a kind of great Deku Tree or Grandmother Willow, figure that the young-uns can come to in their times of distress and I will give them comfort, then wisdom, and then a knife before sending them back out into the world to cause trouble for dragons and kings alike.
