  1. AHN Welcomes New Faculty to the 26-27 School Year

    As students settle into a new school year, several new faculty and staff members are joining the AHN high school community. From World Languages and STEM courses to theater productions, these educators bring new experiences and perspectives to the campus. One of the newest additions is Gina Donovan, who joins the high school as a French teacher. Donovan will guide students as they develop their French language skills and learn about French-speaking cultures around the world. The Science Department also welcomes Andrew Smith, who teaches Biology, Anatomy, and Statistics. “In Biology, I want to introduce them to high school science well. In Anatomy, I want to expose them to what it could be like going into the medical field.   2. Swim and Dive Team Sets Sights on a State Championship

    Splash! The sound of AHN swimmers and divers flying into the water fills the air. As the new school year begins, the Academy of the Holy Names swim and dive team is entering a new season, striving towards a state championship. Swimmers diving off the block for their race. (Sally Beaty) “High school swimming has been amazing. It’s really nice to be a part of such a fun and welcoming environment,” said Katie Skiendziel (‘30). The team has displayed incredible teamwork and determination as the seasons progress. These specific qualities continue to show the strong legacy built over many years. The team has three consecutive class 2A Titles which include the years 2022, 2023, and 2024. This means they have won three state championships in the 2A division.   3. New Theatre Director Introduces Spring Musical, “Come From Away”

    This year, the Academy has welcomed new faces of leadership into the theatre department. A notable figure is Jessica Rhodes, the new upper division theatre director. Jessica teaches Quarter Notes, introduction to acting, and two independent study classes while also taking the directorial position for the upcoming spring musical, “Come From Away.” Her love for teaching is shown through her previous experience within the Patel theatre faculty. Her decision to come to the Academy reflects her love for mentoring young artists and ambition to help teenagers find their voice. “I find a tremendous amount of purpose in teaching and directing high school students,” said Rhodes. “This is such an important time for young artists, they’re starting to figure out who they are.” Circling back to the spring production, “Come From Away” auditions will be held on December 1 at 3:30 p.m., with callbacks on

    At lunch, Academy now has a wide variety of healthy yet enjoyable foods to choose from. Ranging from beef bulgogi to chicken tenders, the school’s new dining service, FLIK, has brought a wider variety of foods to campus for the 2026-2027 school year. Students have expressed mixed reviews about the new dining service. While some students appreciate the variety, others find themselves missing the consistency of the previous dining service. “I like the diversity of FLIK and how it contains healthy options. I just wish there was a staple item I could get any day,” said Chloe Saldin (‘27). FLIK offers a variety of choices, with its eight different stations: soup, main entree, vegetarian entree, sides, bowl, salad special, deli special, and desserts.     On September 17, 2026, Academy hosted their annual Career Day. This day is an opportunity for Academy juniors and seniors to hear from inspirational professionals and explore careers they could go into after high school. During this day, girls are given the opportunity to listen to panelists from a wide variety of professions depending on their interests as well as a mandatory panel for the whole grade and a school wide keynote.     On Monday, September 14, 2026, juniors and seniors were inducted into AHN’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Since 1921, the National Honor Society has symbolized academic excellence and community responsibility. The Academy of the Holy Names has produced at least three decades of notable alumni members in the NHS. Recently inducted member Duaa Khan (‘28) said, “I really enjoyed getting to see my friends succeed and be recognized for all of the hard work we have put in. It was rewarding to celebrate together and realize that our hard work had paid off.” The new math teacher, Riley Waugh, is the moderator of NHS. Waugh said, “ Since we are only two months into the school year, I don’t have too much to share yet, but it has been a wonderful experience so far. I have enjoyed getting to know and supporting our NHS Council, and they have been incredibly helpful as I step into this
  7. The Growth of AHN’s Speech and Debate Team

    On Saturday September 12, 2026, Academy’s Speech and Debate kicked off the competitive season at Alonso High School. Ten members participated in this tournament, each competing in a variety of categories. This includes Extemporaneous Speaking, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Dramatic Performance, Original Oratory, and Policy Debate. This tournament is one of seven competitions in the FGCCFL . FGGCFL, which stands for Florida Gulf Coast Catholic Forensics League, is where AHN’s Speech and Debate team stands most active. Nonetheless, the club looks forward to expanding towards competing in other leagues and larger tournaments.     Ben Shelton , a 23-year-old American tennis player who is ranked number nine worldwide and number one in America, played exceptionally well at this year’s US Open in New York City. It was a performance that will be remembered by many for years to come. He faced many difficult, highly ranked opponents, but was able to advance to the men’s championship match on Sunday, September 13. High school tennis coach and math teacher Robert Quinn says, “[Ben’s] serve is by far what sets him apart. He’s a great athlete as well, and he understands the game (his dad is his coach and used to be the coach at University of Florida). These colorful backpacks are more than just accessories; they represent a senior tradition rooted in nostalgia. This senior backpack tradition is a fun way for seniors to embrace nostalgia and celebrate their final year of high school, especially in a time of so much change and growth. As seniors enter adulthood, they won’t forget the childhood memories that led them there or the countless lessons learned from childhood shows. The tradition of senior backpacks consists of seniors buying cartoon- or movie-themed backpacks from their childhood and using them for school.   10. AP Art Studio Maintains a Presence at AHN

    In the Bailey Center, the art gallery presents many student artworks from various art classes. These classes introduce students with little artistic experience to new forms of art and help students interested in art develop their skills. AP Art Studio is one of these classes offered in the PAC, focusing on developing college-level artistic skills and creative thinking to create a cohesive portfolio. The teacher, Melissa Lima, says that even though this year has been challenging, seeing the students’ three years of creativity and perseverance finally pay off is rewarding.
