  1. Understanding infiltration tanks for modern drainage
    Aug 3, 2026 · original
Heavy rain often transforms paved surfaces into flooded hazards, causing structural damage, safety risks and costly site disruptions. Managing excess surface water effectively requires more than just redirecting it away from a building. Modern construction demands sustainable solutions that mimic natural water cycles instead of overwhelming municipal sewers. So, what is an infiltration tank, and how does it manage stormwater below ground? This post explains how infiltration tanks work, what to expect from these systems and how they can be integrated into modern site designs. What is an infiltration tank? Infiltration tanks are specifically engineered to capture stormwater runoff from impermeable surfaces like roofs, driveways, pavements and car parks. Instead of channelling the water directly into traditional drainage networks, the tank holds the surge volume temporarily. It then allows
  2. What You Need To Know About Detention Tanks
    Jul 16, 2026 · original
Rapid urban development is replacing natural soil with concrete faster than ever, leaving stormwater with nowhere to soak into the ground. This surge in hard surfaces can trigger intense local runoff, leading to strict council regulations and potential project delays. The key to navigating these compliance hurdles is understanding exactly what a detention tank is and how it controls flow. Here’s what you need to know about how they work and why they matter. What is a detention tank? A detention tank is an underground structure that temporarily holds stormwater during heavy rain, then releases it slowly into the drainage network at a controlled rate. Instead of allowing a massive volume of water to overwhelm the local drainage infrastructure all at once, the system captures the immediate runoff. It then slowly releases this water into the municipal system at a controlled, safe rate to pre
  3. Effective Strip Drain Solutions For Superior Water Management
    Jul 16, 2026 · original
Heavy downpours can quickly turn outdoor patios or driveways into dangerous flood zones. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) , same-level slips and trips are the nation’s leading cause of injury hospitalisations, triggering over 22,019 admissions from slipping alone in 2023-2024. Pooling water stains surfaces, ruins landscaping and risks structural damage. Standard point drains often fail to capture fast-flowing sheets of water. The good news is there’s a slimmer, smarter way to manage surface water. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of what a strip drain is, how it works and why it offers superior water protection to your property. What is a strip drain? A strip drain, often called a trench drain or linear drain, is an elongated, narrow channel designed to intercept surface water across a wide perimeter. Unlike traditional square grates that require complex
  4. Design Safer and more walkable pavements
    Dec 15, 2025 · original
Freedom from cars, freedom from sprawl, freedom to walk your city! City planner Jeff Speck is well known for his “general theory of walkability” to transform sprawling cities of six-lane highways and large blocks into safe, walkable oases full of bike lanes and tree-lined streets. Safety, comfort and meaning are amongst his guiding principles for both dry and wet weather. Designers that get the walking surface right include the use of flat and level pavements comprising grates that facilitate the safe mobility of pedestrians. Additionally, these walkable surfaces and their elements not only physically interact but can visually interact with the environment. The best designs offer enormous benefits to all stakeholders, from councils, private asset owners to the users themselves. ACO have released a new revised White Paper to provide a guide to the six most vital considerations when design
  5. Why Engineers are moving away from specifying concrete stormwater tanks
    Dec 8, 2025 · original
Engineers often avoid specifying concrete stormwater tanks where site conditions, performance requirements, cost, and constructability create unacceptable risk or costly delays. Concrete’s weight, rigidity, curing time and susceptibility to cracking, leaching and chemical attack make it less suitable in corrosive or reactive soils, high groundwater conditions, tight or obstructed sites, or projects with accelerated programs and limited access. Concerns around watertightness, long-term durability, maintenance, sustainability and water quality further reduce its appeal—particularly for reuse applications—leading designers to favour lighter, modular alternatives that offer faster installation, higher chemical resistance, flexibility and lower whole-of-life cost. In a recent webinar held through Engineers Australia, the question was asked An independent report by Rider Levett Bucknall found

  9. The importance of maintaining your drains
    Nov 29, 2023 · original
It’s important to note that a drain that isn’t maintained serves no purpose and will inevitably undermine safety and walkability. Trench drains are effectively the inlet structures of the stormwater network, these pavement elements must allow surface level access for easy maintenance. Asset owners must maintain them!!! Here are some key points to consider when selecting trench drains: High water velocities in a trench drain will reduce the amount of maintenance required and will result in longer times between maintenance operations. There are 3 ways to achieve this: 1. Water moves under the influence of its own weight. The deeper the water, the quicker it moves. Trench drains designed with a ‘ V’ profile ensure higher water velocities. Oddly enough, the benefits of high-water velocities are realised during minor (and more common) rainfalls events, where water depths (hence velocities) ne
  10. Underground Tanks for Civil Infrastructure – ACO StormBrixx®
    Apr 12, 2023 · original
For road, rail, port and airport pavements, the need for surface water management requires careful planning with an emphasis on: Minimising earthworks and pipework. Utilising existing pavement levels and drainage infrastructure. Integrating other water management requirements, for example OSD, rainwater harvesting and other WSUD initiatives. However, alongside these transportation ports and corridors, downstream stormwater infrastructure can be very limited, so designers need to deal with water ‘at the source’. Underground stormwater tanks can offer a means to store stormwater so it can be released or ‘infiltrated’ in a controlled manner back into the water table or ‘retained’ for a specific purpose – irrigation, fire protection etc… If downstream infrastructure exists, then they can be used as part of a stormwater ‘detention’ system. Typical uses can include sediment bays for infiltrati
