    The ACORN Political Action Committee has surveyed councillor and mayoral candidates running in the 2022 Toronto Municipal Election. ACORN’s Affordable City Platform includes a summary of the local campaigns members need candidates to commit to if elected. Platform can be viewed here .     Le comité d’action politique d’ACORN (APAC) est une organisation sœur d’ACORN composée de membres d’ACORN qui se portent volontaires pour évaluer les candidats et les soutenir lors des élections.     By Evan Sterling, Central Ottawa Member February 8th, 2021 During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been significant public criticism of privately-owned long-term care homes (LTCs) and retirement homes, particularly in Ontario. An analysis in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that outbreaks in the first wave in privately-owned Ontario LTCs were almost twice as deadly as those in nonprofit or municipally-owned homes (Stall et al., 2020). One of the root causes of this tragedy is the same ownership strategy that is making life miserable for many working-class tenants across Ontario – the “financialization” of residences. According to Prof. Martine August of UWaterloo, in financialized homes, “There are no objectives to deliver better care, dignified environments or good workplaces, which should be paramount in the operation of seniors housing.” (August, 2020) She found that the

    Posted April 6, 2016 Since the launch of our Internet for All campaign at our 2013 National Convention, we have been continually working hard to get affordable internet rates for low-income Canadians . We’ve had some success – Rogers has started providing $10 a month internet for residents in Toronto Community Housing, and federal regulators are now in the process of conducting a review looking at high-speed internet, affordability and access. And we need to keep the pressure on! Our tireless efforts to make Internet for All Canadians a reality have ensured that 10 of our members will be presenting at CRTC’s public hearing on April 14 to explain why broadband internet should be affordable for Canadians.     Posted January 27, 2016 My first experience with a predatory lender was back in 2006 and I went to the Cash Store which was in the Elmvale shopping mall. I was working at this time but was living paycheck to paycheck. I had 3 kids at home at this time and was pregnant for my 4th child, and money was tight and my partner wasn’t helping me financially. The company I worked for didn’t have benefits so I had to pay for medications out of my own pocket. I needed a loan and my bank wouldn’t help me so I went to the Cash Store. Once you start loaning money at one of these places, it becomes a vicious cycle of monetary abuse as you have to re-loan every time you walk in to re-pay the previous loan. And each time I re-paid my loan I was losing like $100-200 in fees. When I went on maternity leave to have my daughter I ended up defaulting on my loan re-payment as there was a 4-6 week gap between g
