  1. lady smellgood
    Sep 27, 2026 · original
elevator meeting beautiful, Black woman smelled of jasmine, lilac, coconut, and patchouli. we rode the floors, silent yet observant. I exited, but turned around and uttered, “You smell good” and watched her face light the dark, enclosed space. “THANK YOU!” in my head, she’s “Lady Smellgood”, subtly lacing our building with her scent without trying. effortless victory.
  2. feels like… but it isn’t.
    Sep 23, 2026 · original
it feels like Thursday, and it’s not–short week for me dragging like the dress’s threaded hem of a Mother in a Southern Baptist Church… forever kissing red seas, while everyone ignores it.
  3. autumn approaching
    Sep 21, 2026 · original
09/22, that’s the day they say autumn will land. I stand, facing the east, ready for wind. my body expects perfection. and autumn, the season that births cooler temps and shorter days will provide it.
  4. heartache
    Sep 18, 2026 · original
A poem shared via Substack Notes on Thursday, September 17, 2026 I won’t say I’m heartbroken, because that means you broke me, but my heart aches for you. isn’t that different? it sounds nicer–cleaner, like I’m not missing you as much as you know I am. like I had something more to do with the No Us that exists. like it’ll heal before I can remember the pain it is causing me to have known you. isn’t it different? that my heart aches for you… isn’t it?

nighttime is sneaking in, eager to beat the streetlights. children gang up in the hallways of my building. the belly of the first floor swells to a size t h r e e t i m e s what it was before. soon, the neighborhood will give birth to autumn, and everyone will fall into comfort, sweater-weathering their lives away for a season.

  7. One Year Later
    Sep 12, 2026 · original
Jernee Timid Loadholt Jernee Timid Loadholt: The Little Monster. The Love of My Life. My Favorite. April 06, 2008 – September 12, 2025 One year later… I never envisioned I’d have another death date etched onto my brain, but when it was time for me to make the best decision for my Little Monster, I swallowed everything within me that said, “Hang on,” and I let go. She lived a spoiled, loved, thought-about-first life, and she had the best send-off for her death. Jernee Timid Loadholt: my heart, my love, my life. I’m surprising myself every single day. Life without her is killing me, but it’s not killing me. Ever-inviting and the neighborhood’s favorite dog everywhere we lived, 17 years with her wasn’t enough. But it had to be. It just had to be. A forever hole in my heart wakes me up daily; she wouldn’t want me giving up. So, I won’t.
  8. boundaries
    Sep 7, 2026 · original
Figures Walking in an Urban Landscape by Mark Rothko on NGA at 46, I didn’t think I’d have to teach people about boundaries. but the younger generation is so self-absorbed, understanding that other people exist is a foreign concept to some of them. I am tired of listening to them whine about life’s struggles when living itself is costly enough. don’t they recognize the value of breathing?
  9. Midsomer
    Sep 5, 2026 · original
Midsomer Murders Not such jolly times in the villages of Midsomer. a murder here. infidelity there. incest around the corner. under the rug is where the secrets are–wasting away only to be restored again. Barnaby and Jones look so well-rested even though they seem to get no rest at all.
  10. one-trick pony
    Sep 3, 2026 · original
micropoetry one-trick-ponying your way through life is what most people want to witness; it’s what they prefer. well… I don’t.
