Rural health and wellbeing in focus as Village Halls Week returns for 2026 16 March 2026 A week-long celebration of England’s more than 10,000 village halls is officially under way, with communities across the country getting together to highlight the enormous positive impact that these often-unassuming buildings can have on rural health and wellbeing. Now in its eighth year, Village Halls Week is using its 2026 outing to showcase just how valuable the buildings are in supporting people to live well, and the extent to which they enable connection in rural areas that so often lack other forms of social environment. The seven-day event is the flagship campaign of Action with Communities in Rural England. Affordable energy in rural England 10 September 2026 Many ACRE Network members are actively engaged in responding to the widespread issue of affordable rural energy. Access to affordable energy, delivered with strong community involvement, is increasingly recognised as vital for strengthening rural resilience. This is a key area of activity across much of the ACRE Network. Several Network members, such as those in Northumberland, Devon and Cambridgeshire, have introduced initiatives to help their local communities with their energy needs. These include supporting access to good quality affordable housing, working with partners to deliver energy advice, opening warm hubs, offering retrofit schemes and delivering savings through bulk fuel purchasing schemes. Rural health in England 10 September 2026 ACRE Network members are actively addressing how to improve and maintain health and wellbeing in rural areas. The NHS 10 Year Health Plan for England emphasises prevention of ill health as the most sustainable way to manage costs and improve outcomes. This aligns closely with the ACRE Network’s core work. Supporting access to good quality affordable housing; partnering with voluntary groups and NHS organisations to reduce loneliness and backing health-focused social enterprises are just some of the activities that Network members have been involved in recently. Elsewhere, members have helped to pilot community health interventions and influenced integrated care board policies around reducing rural health inequalities. Charity in memory of late Queen set up to strengthen communities 8 May 2026 A new UK-wide charity has been launched to commemorate the 100th birthday of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Inspired by her belief that “everyone is our neighbour”, the Queen Elizabeth Trust will provide funding and targeted support to restore and sustain shared spaces across the country. Developing and transforming underused buildings and green areas, as well as establishing a network of new neighbourhood hubs, will be among the new charity’s early priorities. ACRE colleagues are currently exploring ways to engage with the trust, so that rural communities get a fair share of any funding and support that is made available. Crowdfunder for Kent ACRE’s village halls service 8 May 2026 An online fundraising campaign has been launched by Kent ACRE to help bring a permanent village halls service to the county. In recent years, Kent’s village halls have been without the advice, guidance or practical support that’s needed to take them from simple venues-for-hire to vibrant community hubs. Kerry Outlaw, Chief Executive, said: “We are now six weeks into our three-month crowdfunding campaign. “With a bit of luck and support from our fellow Network members, combined with a few generous donors, I have every faith that we will be able to achieve our goal.” The campaign has a fundraising target of just over £71,000, with the current total standing at a respectable £5,800. King’s Speech highlights key issues for rural communities 16 June 2026 Parliament’s new session has formally begun, with King Charles III using the ceremonial opening to lay out the government’s priorities for the year ahead. In an extensive speech to both Houses of Parliament, the monarch announced a swathe of draft legislative measures that the current government aims to bring into law before the end of this new session. Many of the bills could have real-life implications for rural communities if adopted as Acts of Parliament. Measures outlined in the Social Housing Renewal Bill, such as protecting properties through new restrictions on Right to Buy, could help to increase the availability of homes in rural areas. War in Iran could hinder supply of diesel to rural areas 16 June 2026 Parts of rural England may be more susceptible to diesel shortages if the current conflict in the Middle East continues. That is the assessment of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which included the forecast as part of its recently published report, Economic Outlook . It states that, along with reduced economic growth, countries like the UK may experience shortfalls in the supply of key energy products. Sale of royal land could benefit rural communities 16 June 2026 The Prince of Wales has revealed that profits from the sale of private land owned by the Royal Family are to be re-invested into causes that could support rural communities. Up to 20 per cent of the estate owned by the Duchy of Cornwall is expected to be sold over the next 10 years. Money made from the sale, which could be in the region of £500 million, will be used to support a wide range of social initiatives, such as the delivery of more affordable homes in rural areas. New report debunks myth that rural housing is too expensive 16 June 2026 English Rural has published a new report that pours cold water on the notion that providing affordable homes in rural areas is too expensive to be sustainable. The report, No More Excuses , came out last month and included data which showed the difference in costs to a housing association of managing a rural home compared to a property in an urban location. Annual running costs for the average rural home came in at £469, which were found to be 44 per cent lower than the £842 needed to manage an urban property. English Rural claims the misconception lasted so long because there are some extra costs involved in the initial building of rural homes.
