ACSM’s From Around the Field Science Webinar Series Open to Students ACSM’s From Around the Field Science webinar series is designed to provide ACSM students and members with an opportunity to learn about the diverse science our members conduct. Join us for informal discussions with our ACSM members to hear more about what they study, the general research methodology they use, and some of the interesting results their research is generating. In October, Tamerah Hunt, PhD, ATC, FACSM, along with Melissa K. Kossman, PhD, ATC, LAT, and Erica Taylor, PhD, FACSM will present “SDoH – Raising the Standard.” This webinar will highlight how intentional examination of social determinants of health elevates the standard of sports medicine by ensuring we consider people, not just problems. Sports participation among women and girls has dramatically increased over the past decade, reflected in a record numbers of girls competing in high school and collegiate sports and women competing in the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games. For women and girls, sport participation is associated with opportunities to develop physical competence, improve components of fitness, and positively influence overall well-being. Sport can also foster confidence, teamwork, identity, belonging, and a sense of community. At the same time, sport environments introduce unique challenges such as injury, burnout, mental health concerns, pressure related to performance and/or body composition, demanding training and competition schedules, and competing academic, work, or social responsibilities. An additional requirement for optimal health and performance is adequate nutrition. At a basic level, individu - Navigating the CAAHEP Accreditation Requirements: What Program Directors Need to Know

To address concerns surrounding the upcoming CAAHEP accreditation requirements for ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP exams, the ACSM Certification Board recognizes two in-process stages along the accreditation pathway to ensure graduating students remain eligible without waiting for full programmatic accreditation. If your institution is currently working through these updates, understanding these two milestones can help you address any uncertainties and your students navigate their career pathways. Initiation: Formal Inquiry This is the official first step to begin the accreditation process through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) . This requires simply completing an inquiry form that takes approximately two minutes to complete and is free. After submission, the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences (CoAES) provides the program with a self-study - Congress Averts Shutdown with Short-Term Funding Deal

As we approach the end of the fiscal year, Congress passed g a continuing resolution (CR) to keep federal agencies operating through the fall, avoiding a government shutdown On September 2, the President signed H.R. 6500, the “Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027,” into law. The measure, which extends government funding at current FY 2026 levels through December 11, 2026, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support following a 90-6 vote in the Senate and a 370-48 vote in the House. For ACSM members, this temporary extension provides critical stability. Federal agencies that are vital to our mission—including the CDC, NIH, and other departments that fund critical research and public health initiatives promoting physical activity—will remain open and funded at their current levels. This ensures uninterrupted support for ongoing grants and programs through the early winter. OM - Active Voice | Can Being More Active Prime Your Brain to Benefit More from Exercise?

A single bout of exercise can sharpen thinking. But does everyone’s brain respond in the same way? Probably not. The lifestyles of those who participate in exercise sessions will likely differ from person to person. Some spend much of their day sitting, while others accumulate considerably more light and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. We wondered whether these habitual movement patterns might influence how much cognitive benefit someone receives from an acute bout of exercise. This question matters because exercise does not occur in isolation. Every single day contains 1,440 minutes, divided among sleep, sedentary behavior and physical activity of different intensities. Changing time in one behavior inevitably changes time available for another. Yet research has traditionally focused on the exercise bout itself, paying much less attention to the behavioral context in which that - Science Spotlight | September 2026 Highlights

ACSM publishes roundtable statement on Components of Fitness! In August, ACSM published a new specialty communication “ The Components of Fitness: A Roundtable Statement by the American College of Sports Medicine ” in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise journal. This statement provides consensus and recommendations for an updated, evidence-based framework in understanding the components of physical fitness. The five updated components presented in the statement include: cardiorespiratory fitness muscular fitness (strength, endurance, power) body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass) flexibility neuromotor fitness (agility, balance, gait speed) “ The ACSM roundtable statement on the components of fitness centers on a widely used paradigm, providing a framework for exercise prescription and exercise counseling. The updated model of physical fitness is based on the latest scientific - Hot Topic | What Myosin Fragmentation is Teaching Us about Exercise and Atrophy

If you coach, train, or treat athletes and patients, you’re aware that skeletal muscle adapts to the balance between building up (protein synthesis) and breaking down (protein breakdown). We’ve gotten remarkably good at measuring the “building up” side through stable isotope tracer methods, with newer methods enabling participants to orally consume them. The “breaking down” side has been a much harder nut to crack. Measuring true muscle protein breakdown requires arterial and venous blood draws, blood flow measurements, and isotope infusions. Not only are these methods technically demanding and expensive, but they’re simply not feasible for most labs, let alone field or clinical settings. That gap matters. Whether we’re trying to understand how muscle recovers from a hard training bout, why a limb withers after two weeks in a cast or boot, or how disease-related muscle wasting progresses - Policy Corner | Fit Future Act Advances, Senate Confirms New CDC Director

Legislative Update: Fit Future Act (H.R. 9723) As we continue to monitor the 119th Congress for developments impacting physical activity, sports medicine, and national health initiatives, our focus turns to H.R. 9723 , formally known as the Fit Future Act. Introduced on July 16, 2026, by Representative Ryan Mackenzie and co-sponsored by Representatives Greg Murphy and Jefferson Van Drew, this legislation seeks to statutorily establish the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. The bill proposes replacing or updating prior executive directives with a formally mandated federal advisory body. The Fit Future Act dictates that the newly authorized Council will consist of up to thirty members, appointed by the President for renewable two-year terms. To ensure structured leadership and interagency cooperation, the President is empowered to designate a Chair and Vice Chair, while - Science Spotlight | August 2026 Highlights
