The Merage JCC in Irvine, California is saving $70,000 a year. Not from solar, not from an electrified HVAC — from swapping out light bulbs. Lighting is the least glamorous project on any facilities list, which is exactly why so many buildings still have fluorescent tubes humming away. An LED (Light Emitting Diode) retrofit is as simple as an electrician replacing lighting fixtures over a few days, usually between programs. No construction, no programmatic disruptions, no lengthy capital campaign. The savings are immediate and permanent. LEDs draw roughly a fifth of the electricity of conventional fixtures and last years longer, which also removes the regular, frequent cost and hassle of changing bulbs in the high ceilings of sanctuaries, social halls, and gymnasiums. A battery is simply a box that stores electricity, often stored when it’s cheap or plentiful and releases it when you need it. Batteries are vital solutions that most buildings are missing and are becoming a great investment in the clean energy transition. Batteries save you money because of demand charges: the part of your utility bill set by your single highest moment of use in a month, not your total consumption. This is the second iteration of Pearlstone’s Sundays on the Farm series. The first existed pre-pandemic and ended in 2020. I originally got involved after participating in the Jewish Learning Fellowship 1.0 and Shabbat Hosting Lab. My instructor for Shabbat Hosting Lab came up to me and a friend that I knew from my overnight summer camp growing up and asked if we were interested in starting a chapter at Madison for an environmental Jewish club called Adamah on Campus. We both jumped out of our seats in excitement and followed up with her immediately. Little did I know that this organization would have such an impact on my college experience. Hayom Harat Olam. Today the world is born. Today the world is new. For us all. It also marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11, a threshold event that changed the course of history. And in just a few weeks, we will celebrate Pearlstone’s 25th Anniversary- it opened just a few days after 9/11. It’s hard to imagine two anniversaries occurring so close together, carrying such different feelings. One about violence, pain, and loss. The other about community and belonging. In many ways, our movement is working toward a bold visionary goal: What would it mean to change the course of history and bend that arc towards joy, love, and hope instead? His father was avid believer in the value of informal Jewish educational spaces, so he established the Jack Pearlstone Institute for Living Judaism. Twenty-five years later, Pearlstone is celebrating its 25th anniversary in October. “When we started, I had a dream that it would be successful,” Pearlstone said. “How successful? No one knew.” When the Jack Pearlstone Institute for Living Judaism was first created, it was a program without walls. Through this collaboration, our Rishonim (8th and 9th grade) and Avodah (11th grade, summer-long program) campers spent time on the land, hiking, weaving, carving, building campfires and praying, in ways designed to open up wonder, connection, and a little bit of holy discomfort. This network was pioneered by Mark Smolarz and The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore, and is co-chaired by Carole Taylor, Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin and myself. My passions for protecting what we have has driven me to embrace, learn and teach organic gardening, food preservation, beekeeping and all things nature. Adamah Detroit has built upon my foundation and has given me opportunities to educate and inspire others. As the Temple Emanu-El, Oak Park Community Garden Team lead for the past seven years, I’ve spent countless hours watering, weeding, planning and maintaining a food-growing area and pollinator spaces with a team of dedicated volunteers. Hi! Our names are Ariel and Lila, and we are sisters from Brookline, MA. In 2020, going into eighth grade, Lila was asked if she would be interested in joining a Jewish, youth-led environmental program organized by Adamah. Lila could not have been more excited to join; it was the perfect combination of her passions. As Lila eventually transitioned to college, Ariel was starting her first year of high school and her Adamah teen leadership journey. To us, the Adamah Youth Movement (formerly the Jewish Youth Climate Movement) represents the perfect intersection of Jewish identity, community, values, and environmentalism, which we first developed at our beloved Eden Village Camp. This movement gave us an outlet to take direct action through environmental Judaism year-round. We have had the opportunity to grow alongside JYCM since the beginning.
