  1. Visiting The Bayeux Tapestry at The British Museum
    Sep 21, 2026 · original
I thought that it might be useful to document how I visited The British Museum’s exhibition of The Bayeux Tapestry last week in London. Obviously, the exhibit itself is stunning, but I thought adding some practical information might help others. First of all, I got my ticket via my membership of The British Museum. Normally for special exhibitions, members can go any time, and as frequently as they like, without booking in advance. But for an exhibit as popular as The British Museum knew that this would be, they have limited it two visits per member, which also need to be booked in advance. I’m not going to pretend that my booking experience went smoothly, with me being kicked out of the queue both midway through and at the end, on more than one occasion. But I got there, and got a ticket for a Friday at 10:20am. For what it’s worth, the next member’s set of tickets is released on 6 Octo
  2. Edison Research at SSRS Top 25 Podcasts in the UK: Q2 2026
    Sep 8, 2026 · original
We’ve just had the Q2 2026 Top 25 Podcasts in the UK rankings from Edison Research at SRSS. This is their usual quarterly survey of podcast listening in the UK which is based on a recall survey of at least 2,000 weekly podcast consumers in the UK. They collect data regardless of platform, and the methodology is similar to that used for their US surveys. Here’s what Q2 2026 looks like: The top four podcasts are unchanged in position, with The Rest Is Football moving up one place in a quarter in which it got massive exposure during the World Cup by being picked up by Netflix. That’s something that is now continuing through this year’s football season. The News Agents pips Newscast this time around, but most of the titles in this list have been in the list before. The two new entries are Dish with Angela Hartnett and Nick Grimshaw in at number 19, and The Martin Lewis Podcast getting in at
  3. RAJAR Q2 2026
    Aug 6, 2026 · original
This post is brought to you in association with RALF from DP Software and Services . I’ve used RALF for the many years, and it’s my favourite RAJAR analysis tool. So I am delighted that I continue to be able to bring you this RAJAR analysis in association with RALF. For more details on the product, contact Deryck Pritchard via this link or phone 07545 42567 . Overall Trends The Q2 2026 RAJAR release measures the period ending 28th June 2026, and a brief reminder that only the BBC national stations and a handful of the biggest commercial stations are actually measuring the April-June period. The majority of stations are six-month weighted and are therefore being measured over the January-June period. It’s also worth noting that Q2 each year is when RAJAR updates their population figures. The adult UK population is increasing over time, and the number is updated once a year. The RAJAR popu
  4. The Four Worst Things About FIFA’s TV Coverage of the World Cup
    Jul 15, 2026 · original
The 2026 World Cup has been pretty decent as a football tournament. I’ll leave aside the politics of the US, Trump and FIFA. The TV coverage has been mostly excellent too, even if during the first semi-final, we got a good look at the Sony mirrorless camera settings that FIFA is using for some of its crowd reaction shots. Briefly appearing on the World Feed of France vs Spain The referee-camera is decent. Not as game changing as drones at the Olympics, but still sometimes genuinely useful. But here are four things I’ve really disliked about FIFA’s TV coverage of the World Cup. Most of these are not new: Cutaways to FIFA chief Gianni Infantino at every game. Yes, he’s often sitting near heads of State (or Arsene Wenger), but it feels like it’s there to show how important he is as an individual. Are we supposed to be pleased that he’s actually going to the games? Similarly, the cutaways to
  5. Ofcom Podcast Survey and Audio Report 2026
    Jul 14, 2026 · original
Sorry – this year’s version of this summary is a little late coming out! At this year’s Podcast Show in London, Ofcom launched the results of their 2026 Podcast Survey and Audio Report . Once again Mark Pearson, Senior Analyst at Ofcom presented some of the findings in a session at The Podcast Show alongside Francesca Hunt, Research Analyst. And as ever, the real detail is available in the full data tables that Ofcom makes available on their website. But as usual, I’m going to go through the full tables and get into some of the data. Ofcom Podcast Survey 2026 Ofcom has maintained its consistency in using the same fieldwork company, Yonder, for this year’s research as in previous years. The survey was conducted using Yonder’s online panel between the 26th February – 10th March 2026, reaching a nationally representative sample of 1,097 respondents, which consisted of 547 non podcast users,
  6. US TV Rights for 2030 and 2034 Men’s FIFA World Cups
    Jul 14, 2026 · original
If there’s one story in the US media that is coming out of this World Cup, it’s that Fox and the Spanish language Telemundo are having an absolute field day with the enormous ratings they’re generating, even though all the host countries were out by the round of 16. More than 50m people watched USA v Belgium across both channels, with nearly 47m watching Mexico v England – the vast majority coming on Telemundo for that fixture. When FIFA announced “hydration breaks”, Fox was quick to sell that time as advertising (unlike Telemundo, or ITV in the UK), and generate millions more in revenue. It’s also important to understand that Fox got this World Cup at something of a bargain rate (NYT $). Essentially they’re paying less than $500m for the rights for a tournament in their own timezone because FIFA had previously given the 2022 World Cup to Qatar having sold TV rights to a summer tournamen
  7. Merger Talk
    Jun 30, 2026 · original
In the last few hours, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy has said that she is “ minded ” to intervene on public interest grounds in the Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery (WBD). This is potentially a major hurdle in the deal which has been passed in the US. But I wanted to write a little about another big deal that will have major ramifications in the UK market – the separation of Comcast into two parts, as well as the acquisition within one of those two parts, by Sky of ITV channels. Comcast is the massive media company that owns a significant, and very profitable cable and wireless business in the US. It also owns NBCUniversal including the broadcast network NBC, the streamer Peacock, the film studio Universal and the Universal theme park business. It also owns Sky which itself is made up of Sky UK, Sky Ireland and Sky Italia – the German speak
  8. Are Podcasts on Netflix Working?
    Jun 23, 2026 · original
As mentioned in Podnews today , there have been a few stories about whether podcasts on Netflix are actually doing the business for the streamer. This is a subject that I’m very interested in, and covered a little in my recent Signals in the Static presentation at The Podcast Show. In essence, my argument was that because there is very little crossover between UK and US podcasts, to make this work, Netflix would need to invest in podcasts in each market they are active in. The Bill Simmons Podcast is never going to do much business in the UK since it covers US sport, and it’s notable that even The Rest is Football which is on Netflix during the World Cup, is most likely to appeal to UK viewers given the talent involved, but also the focus of the podcast – headlining with England (and Scotland) coverage, rather than the USMNT. Matt Belloni at Puck said this in last Friday’s What I’m Heari
  9. Edison Research Top 25 Podcasts in the UK: Q1 2026
    May 29, 2026 · original
Edison Research at SSRS has just published its Q1 2026 Top 25 podcasts in the UK , from Edison Podcast Metrics. This is their regular quarterly survey of UK podcast listeners. A reminder that this chart is based on at least 2,000 weekly podcast consumers in the UK. Respondent data is collated throughout the full quarter to ensure the data is as fresh as possible. The top 4 podcasts are unchanged in order, with Newscast jumping a couple of places in this survey, and Americast jumping into the top ten for the first time as well. The other notable new entry here is the ZOE Science & Nutrition podcast which arrives in the Top 25 for the first time. And there are three football podcasts now comfortably in the Top 25, with The Rest is Football , leading The Overlap and Stick to Football. It was interesting to note that all three were represented at last week’s Podcast Show. The Rest is Footbal
  10. Signals in the Static from The Podcast Show 2026
    May 22, 2026 · original
This year was the fifth edition of The Podcast Show in London, and I have been to all of them. In fact, I have spoken at three of them, including this year when the subject of my talk was Signals in the Static: A Data-Driven Guide to the Podcast Landscape . The objective of the talk was to take a data-led approach to examining trends in podcasting in 2026. I also wanted to present some techniques that anyone could use to explore the podcasting landscape. The full presentation is below and is available to download. But I’ll also dig into some of the slides in this post, so read on. Signals in the Static Download What I was trying to do with this presentation was to use the Edison Research Top 25 UK podcasts as a basket of podcasts that showed current trends in podcasts. There are challenges with this, not least that they are the biggest podcasts in the country are certainly not representa
