NOTE: It’s been hectic time the last couple of weeks, so I’m not able to keep up with too much of the news at the moment. Today will be another light week. Introducing Perplexity Deep Research I know this was available with ChatGPT Pro and with Gemini, but I’ve been using Perplexity for quite a while, so I’m looking forward to trying this out inside of Perplexity. It feels like this should be be a really good use case for LLMs. Run LLMs on macOS using llm-mlx and Apple’s MLX framework By Simon Willison I still run most of my LLM (or any AI model) tests on an M1 MacBook Pro. I need to look into using MLX more. It sounds like inference is getting really good using that framework. I know CUDA on Nvidia cards will still outperform it in most, if not all, cases, but I’d like to see how good MLX works on my machine. I also keep meaning to try out Simon’s LLM cli. I usually use Open WebUI and O

NOTE: This was another light week where I didn’t get to read up on as many posts as I wanted so not too many links today. Qwen 2.5 VL! By Simon Willison I haven’t played with this model yet, but looking forward to another multimodal model I can run locally on my home server. Aider This is something I’m adding to my toolkit to try out in the near future. I’ve seen people mention how great it is online, but I haven’t actually tried it for myself since I have access to other cloud hosted AI tooling. I’m interested to see how this works with my locally hosted models though and to see how this works for me given I’m usually using an IDE for dev work. Cursor Project Rules (via X) By Michael Feldstein Interesting reading through some of these project rules to help Cursor be more helpful without having to put a lot of content directly in the prompt. This seems more flexible than shoving everythi

Deekseek R1 on Ollama This isn’t what I’d normally link to, but the new Deepseek R1 model is available on Ollama. This is such an interesting model because you can see how it reasoned through your prompt to derive its final answer. I haven’t played with it enough to see how useful the small models are for real world use cases, but it’s really interesting to see it question itself and work through the problem. What I’ve learned about writing AI apps so far By Laurie Voss I thought these were interesting observations. I don’t know if I’ve had the same experience using LLMs in every case, but it’s still interesting to see what challenges others are hitting in this space. I think this post undersells LLMs, but I still thought it was an interesting perspective. AI Mistakes Are Very Different from Human Mistakes By Bruce Schneier This was pretty insightful. I hadn’t really thought too much abo

Quick Note – I didn’t read through as many items this week, so this is an extra short list. I’ll get back to my regular reading schedule in a week or two. o1 isn’t a chat model (and that’s the point) By Ben Hylak I thought this was an interesting observation about how to get the most out of o1/o1 pro. I hadn’t really been making too much of a distinction between o1 and 4o as far as how I prompted. I’ve tried this approach a few times now and I do get more useful answers. It’s not bad with a “regular” prompt, but it does seem to be more helpful when you don’t guide it to the answer. I Ditched the Algorithm for RSS—and You Should Too – Joey’s Hoard of Stuff By Joey Einerhand I’ve been using RSS for a very long time. I usually use NetNewsWire, but my usage is really just blog feeds. I like the idea about even pulling RSS for Reddit and several other sites. I have an automated MailBrew-like

NVIDIA Puts Grace Blackwell on Every Desk and at Every AI Developer’s Fingertips I don’t know if I’ll personally try to buy one of these or not, but I did sign up for the email list to see when it’s available. This sounds like a great idea for anyone wanting to do experiments locally with larger AI models. I’m running some larger models on a 96GB of RAM server, but it’s all on the CPU so it’s super slow. This Digits device seems relatively cost effective (for what it is). It sounds like a 5090 might be more powerful, but way less RAM, so this is a good balance of GPU power with unified RAM. Yes, you can get an Apple machine that can match the unified RAM, but at a higher cost AND I’ll be very, very shocked if this machine’s performance doesn’t blow Apple Silicon out of the water for these AI model specific tasks (it may be worse in every other way, but not that one). 34 Life Lessons from

Using LLMs and Cursor to become a finisher By Zohaib Rauf I’ve had a similar experience. I’m not an engineering manager, but I don’t get to write as much code as I’d like at home or at work. I’ve had several side projects (or even just ideas to explore) that I’ve put off forever because I didn’t have enough time to sit down and get through a lot of the boilerplate needed to even start. Using Cursor, I’ve been able to get a couple of prototype apps built for myself. What would have taken at least 2+ weeks of effort is now just a few hours. I agree with Zohaib that you should start with a spec and work in small iterations. I have not has as good an experience letting Cursor bootstrap the project. I end up setting up the skeleton of the project myself and letting it take over from there. That may be unique to my projects though – one was Swift using Xcode and another .NET 8. Updating My Obs
  7. Apple Vision Pro – First Thoughts

Should You Buy One? I know that’s the main question everyone is asking themselves, so before I get to any of my specific thoughts about the device, here’s my answer to that question: If you’re specifically thinking about getting this for VR gaming – either stand-alone or PCVR, as your primary use case – do NOT buy it. It’s not for that and likely never will be (with this 1st gen hardware). You’re better off with a Quest 3 and/or full PCVR rig. You should only buy one if you’re working to build an app for Apple Vision Pro or have some vested interest in understanding this ecosystem and how to think about what might be coming in the future. Try it in person for a peek at what it can do, but you’re not missing much (today) that you wouldn’t see in a short in-store demo. The exception to the above is if you really like movies, TV, and/or game streaming, would otherwise buy a huge OLED TV and
  8. Printing TPU on the Sovol SV06
    Feb 11, 2023 · original
One thing I wanted to try on my Sovol SV06 that my previous printers couldn’t do is TPU. I finally had a project where I needed to print a little TPU “sock” to go around a printed part to give it a little flexibility and grip. After about 10 failures in a row, I finally figured out a consistent way to print TPU with my SV06. Here’s what worked for me. Note that I’m using PrusaSlicer, not Cura (or Sovol Cura), so this may not be as useful in another slicer. I’m also printing Polymaker PolyFlex TPU95 – it’s the only TPU I’ve used so far, so I don’t know if this works well for other TPU or if it’s unique to this one. Start with the “Generic FLEX” filament profile Change the temp (both initial layer and other layers) setting to 250C (up from the default 240C) Unscrew the thumbscrew on your extruder tension arm until the washer moves away from the arm Tighten the thumbscrew on the extruder te
  9. Syncing PrusaSlicer Configuration
    Jan 29, 2023 · original
If you’re like me and end up using PrusaSlicer on different computers with non-Prusa machines (I’m using mine primarily with a Sovol SV06), you’ve probably been frustrated that your machine/print/filament settings from one computer aren’t available on your other computers. I hope Prusa adds an official way to opt-in to sync this data in the future, but there is a pretty usable workaround. The short version is the PrusaSlicer app accepts a parameter “–datadir” which you can set when you launch the app to have all of your configuration written to a specific directory. If that directory is in a directory that gets synced between computers, then your files will also be synced. In my case, I’m using my Mac and I’m syncing to a OneDrive folder. You can do this from Windows and use iCloud/Dropbox/etc – it’s the same idea for all of them. On my Mac, I have PrusaSlicer installed in the default lo
  10. Budget Notify – Part 2
    Jan 2, 2021 · original
Well, I expected I was going to end up with a series of blog posts on Budget Notify when I originally wrote the Part 1 post . I planning on building out a whole frontend and backend system. At the end of the day though, I found an even better solution to my specific problem, so I went with that. In short, I scrapped the whole server concept and make the entire process run from my iPhone via Shortcuts. My iPhone automatically runs a set of commands daily that load our budget, see if notifications need to be sent, and if so, send them out via Twilio exactly like the server was doing. I could technically remove Twilio and have my iPhone send the notifications from my own phone number via Messages, but I want to keep Twilio for now. Debugging the shortcut was the most painful part. Now that I have it setup, it’s trouble free and works great, but I spent several days trying to figure out why
