  1. Let them eat cake
    Apr 11, 2026 · original
When an organization or individual is well connected, media savvy, and wealthy, they shouldn’t be excused from being a considerate citizen. In fact, if they have reached the fortunate position where they are able to think about more than just getting by day-to-day, thoughtful and considerate is the bare minimum. There is a grassroots campaign in my less than affluent neighborhood to stop the process of bulldozing a natural area along the river to install a solar field. The people who live in the area don’t want it. The people who live in more affluent areas and will profit from it, of course, do. I took to the keyboard to craft a letter to editor to One of America’s Great Newspapers . Below is a version of what I shared. Dear Mr. Troy, After reading South Toledo solar project gets plan commission’s OK; heads to city council published April 9, I find it curious yet unsurprising that the T

“Facebook does work for a beauty product company tracking when thirteen-to-seventeen-year-old girls delete selfies, so it can serve a beauty ad to them at that moment.” (Sarah Wynn-Williams, Careless People)

These are some of the discoveries (and re-discoveries) of things I’ve been raving about this year to the few people I see on a regular basis. (I apologize to my co-workers for blathering on sometimes.) I hope there are at least a couple of things of value here for you. Website archive.org — I found myself mentioning the non-profit archive.org often this year. A key feature I turn to is archiving webpages. They take a snapshot of what is published, outbound links and all. I found it helpful when a company changed its published warranty and then denied it to shrug off claims. I also turn to it to preserve pages from news outlets and government sites before things are taken down or modified. They have millions of books, movies, and classic tv shows too. It’s definitely a fun media distraction. Music KCRW Eclectic24 — A human-curated streaming radio station. It’s available on Spotify, Apple

I wouldn’t buy gasoline from BP when I first started driving. With multinational British Petroleum’s extensive operations in apartheid South Africa, it seemed like a small but actionable thing an individual could do to try to make a difference. Even though things changed in 1993 or 1994 for South Africa, my buying habits never really did. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve made a purchase at a BP since then. I don’t support the approach the world’s richest man is taking to rightsize our national government. Maybe it’s time I look at who is advertising on his broadcasting platform. At the moment, Temu, Robinhood, Solar Heavy, The NFL, DraftKings, Shein, Restaurant Brands International, Amazon, Dell, and Red Deer Games are major advertisers. Apple, IBM, Disney, Comcast, Warner Bros., Discovery, and Lionsgate Entertainment have all recently returned to advertising on
  9. Independent Bookstore Directory
    Dec 16, 2024 · original
TL;DR A directory of independent bookstores in the 20 most populous states and Washington DC has been compiled, with contact information for authors to reach out to. I was thinking about my author friends who are looking to do outreach to non-chain bookstores. In my experiments to learn how to use AI tools, I’ve put together a listing of indie bookstores. I first tried by asking Perplexity for the top 1,000 bookstores in America, but it was unable to compile a list like that. I started more locally to me, generating a list of top bookstores in Ohio, and then Michigan, and then New York. Since it can’t do a top 1,000 list for the country, I chose to look at the top 20 most populous states. From there, I asked for a top 25 list for each state. Those results were imported into a spreadsheet . The prompt I ended with went something like this: “What are the top 25 independent booksellers in O
