- Nearly Half of Children with ADHD Have Sleep Apnea: New Study
Sep 18, 2026 · original
September 18, 2026 Rates of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are significantly higher among kids with ADHD, according to a systematic review published in the Journal of Attention Disorders. 1 that found 44% of children with ADHD also had OSA. Three research databases were searched, resulting in an analysis of 11 longitudinal studies involving 903 children formally diagnosed with OSA or ADHD. Using a random-effects meta-analysis, researchers found that the pooled prevalence of OSA in children with ADHD was 44%. They also found that adenoidectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the adenoid glands, consistently led to significant improvements in OSA and ADHD symptoms. OSA is a sleep-related breathing disorder in which the muscles that keep the upper airway open relax too much during sleep, causing the airway to narrow or collapse. This, in turn, leads to a drop in oxygen and night wakings, whi - Do ADHD Meds Stunt Growth? A New Stimulant Study Says No
Sep 18, 2026 · original
September 18, 2026 Long-term stimulant use for ADHD negligibly affects adult height, according to a new cohort study published in Pediatric Research that tracked 64,775 children for up to 28 years. 1 Parents making ADHD treatment decisions commonly worry that prescription stimulants will stunt their child’s growth. In a 2024 ADDitude survey of 11,000 readers , less than half (42%) of parents chose to medicate their children in the months following an ADHD diagnosis. Those respondents cited side effects like appetite suppression or sleep disruption — both possible impediments to growth — as influences on their decision. Murky or conflicting findings from previous studies have done little to ease caregivers’ worries. “Many prior studies either did not follow participants to adult height, so reported effects may reflect delayed maturation rather than true adult height deficits, or they did - Study: Methylphenidate Use Benefits Daily Functioning, Performance at Work
Sep 17, 2026 · original
September 17, 2026 Methylphenidate (brand name: Ritalin) use is associated with real-time improvements in both ADHD symptoms and daily functioning at work, which continue to strengthen over time in adults with ADHD, according to a new exploratory study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders . 1 Of participants with ADHD who received methylphenidate: 39.6% showed improvement in both symptoms and functioning 33.8 % showed improvement in symptoms but not functioning 4.3% showed improvement in functioning but not symptoms Within the placebo group, symptoms and functioning improved in 26% of participants, and 43.8% demonstrated no improvement on either measure. The findings suggest that evaluating symptom improvement alone isn’t enough to determine whether a patient is receiving optimal treatment. Clinicians should also consider how ADHD medication impacts a patient’s daily functioni - New Research: Sex Differences Impact ADHD Symptoms, Treatment Efficacy
Sep 16, 2026 · original
September 15, 2026 Sex differences exert a significant and complex impact on ADHD symptoms, treatment, and risk of co-occurring conditions, according to the findings of several recent studies. Most recently, researchers from Denmark found that individuals with ADHD faced relatively greater risk of developing 13 physical conditions, and that risk ratio was significantly affected by the sex of the patient. 1 Research on the impact of menstrual cycle hormones on ADHD symptoms further illuminated the notable influence of sex on ADHD symptomatology and impairment. 2 Finally, a study on the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for adolescents with ADHD also revealed differences across the sex divide. Sex Impacts Risk of Physical Conditions People with ADHD demonstrate a higher risk for 13 physical conditions, including endocrine, metabolic, and eye conditions, according to a study th - “My ADHD Brain Can Manage a Trauma Bay. Each shift begins the same way: I eyeball my patients, assess the severity of their cases, and decide who needs me first. In bed five, a four-year-old boy has hives climbing all over his neck. He says his throat feels funny and is becoming short of breath. He’s number one, of course. Place IV. Push medication. Wait. Eventually the redness fades. His mother finally takes a deep breath. OK, who’s next? Bed six. A man with a kidney stone is writhing in pain. IV fluids, pain medication, Flomax. Another patient comes through the door clutching his chest. A heart attack. Suddenly we’re moving fast, prepping him for the cardiac catheterization lab. I loved my time in the emergency department. I loved the focused concentration it took to keep several urgent situations moving at once, and the strange calm that came over me when everything was in chaos. I loved holding a frightened person’s hand, - Call It a Comeback: Try These Responses to Unwelcome ADHD Comments
Sep 10, 2026 · original
Everybody’s a critic — or, at least, it can feel that way when you or your child has ADHD. Between judgmental family members, clueless acquaintances, and pushy friends, it can feel like a daily bombardment of negative comments for ADHD-fueled behavior that is misunderstood. With emotional dysregulation thrown into the mix, the stage is set for a fiery reaction — which only fuels the cycle. So, we asked ADDitude readers for their tried-and-true responses to unsolicited advice, unhelpful feedback, and unkind commentary on ADHD symptoms or behaviors. Though they vary widely in tone and approach, each response sets a boundary, serving as a small but powerful moment of advocacy . The next time an ill-informed and opinionated bystander offers a rude remark, try one of these ideas: [ Read: Coping With the Stigma of ADHD ] “To family members, I say: ‘ Wow, not sure that was helpful — if you were - “The Lindsay Clancy Case Should Alarm ADHD Moms”
Sep 4, 2026 · original
The following is a personal essay that reflects the opinion of its author. As America watches the Lindsay Clancy trial, I keep hearing the same comment from mothers online and in my own circles: That could have been me. Many of us recognize ourselves in her story. The lack of support, the sleepless nights, the panic and desperation, what it feels like when no one is listening, and losing yourself and not knowing where to turn. As I write this, jurors are deliberating Clancy’s fate. I am not on the jury, and I am not a psychiatrist. I cannot tell you what happened that day. I am not equipped to judge her, nor do I aim to turn Clancy into a folk hero. Three children are dead, and of course, their lives should remain at the center of this story. But I am a neurodivergent mother who recognizes a distress flare when I see one. Modern psychiatric care is still frighteningly ill-equipped to tre - “Some Days I’m Unstoppable. Other Days I Can’t Start. Which One Is the Real Me?”
Sep 4, 2026 · original
Some days I am unstoppable. Other days I cancel everything. In the moment, both energy and overwhelm feel like permanent states. On a good day, I can write an article, book a Pilates class, make plans with friends, apply for an opportunity I probably have no business applying for, reorganize half my house and decide that this is it: I’ve cracked life. This is who I am now and forevermore, how could it ever be another way? Then another version of me wakes up. Everything is heavy. The social plans I enthusiastically made feel impossible. The project I couldn’t stop thinking about sits untouched. Noise is louder… so much louder . People are more exhausting and my motivation has disappeared. I look at the calendar the other version of me created and think: What the hell was she thinking? This version feels permanent too. I could never do all of that. Sep 1, 2026 · original
Most high school students would rather endure detention than address a theater of 150 teachers about learning differences. Not Benjamin Hollingsworth. The Virgin River actor’s own learning challenges fueled his personal mission to help educators recognize and support all students with learning differences . Perhaps it was that fearless drive, and ADHD’s over-the-top creativity , that led Hollingsworth, 41, to the business of acting. He has been in dozens of TV shows, including his latest role: playing Daniel Brady, a Marine veteran who struggles to adjust to civilian life, on Netflix’s longest-running original series. Now in its seventh season, Virgin River delivers drama and romance against the backdrop of a remote Northern California town with a strong sense of community. Hollingsworth, a father of three, was diagnosed with ADHD in his late 30s, though he reports that related challenge - ADHD Awareness Month 2026: ADHD at the Center

Aug 30, 2026 · original
Q: “My insurer stopped covering my brand-name ADHD medication, so I had to switch to the generic version. It doesn’t seem to be as effective. Could I be imagining this?” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that generic and brand-name medication be roughly comparable regarding peak blood level and the total amount absorbed. But “roughly comparable” means that the level of the active ingredient(s) in a generic can range from 80% to 125% of that in the brand-name medication, so there is variability. With higher-dose stimulants , especially, patient response hinges on the concentration of dopamine or norepinephrine delivered at the synapse, as well as the speed at which that dosage changes from one minute to the next. If you have a generic drug that is absorbed a little slower or faster, it can feel different. [ Download: The Soaring Cost of ADHD Care ] Your doctor, if they - Does Your Kid Find Mindfulness Boring?
Aug 28, 2026 · original
Q : “I’m trying to teach my kids mindfulness techniques to quiet their busy ADHD brains, but I get lots of resistance, or I hear, ‘That’s so boring.’ How can I counter this?” Mindfulness is cognitive fitness training that aims to build real-time and compassionate awareness of our lives. It is an antidote to remaining lost in distraction. Getting kids engaged with mindfulness requires meeting them where they are in their development. Try to make the practice familiar first, rather than expecting intense practice. That often means letting go of common mindfulness misconceptions. The Value of Building Self-Awareness Encouraging a child to try mindfulness starts with developing our own practice. We act as role models by normalizing meditation and by demonstrating that practicing mindfulness doesn’t mean trying to stop thoughts or bad feelings. Instead, it’s about learning to relate to whatev - “I Work Better Under Pressure”

Q: I feel like I perform better when I’m facing a tight deadline, but the stress of waiting until the last minute is taking a toll. How do I move past this? It sounds like you’re experiencing the optimistic but inherently flawed thought patterns that fuel procrastination. As an ADHD and procrastination researcher, I call these patterns “automatic avoidant thoughts” (AATs) – quick, believable thoughts that make avoidance seem reasonable in the moment. People with ADHD are especially likely to slip into these thoughts, but your brain can also be rewired to propel you into action. [ Read: How to Stop Procrastinating, According to ADHD Experts] The Thoughts That Drive Procrastination One study found that people with ADHD experience AATs, like the ones listed to the right, 62% of the time, compared with 35% of the time for people without ADHD. Aug 26, 2026 · original
August 26, 2026 ADHD medications decrease antidepressant usage and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in people diagnosed with attention deficit, suggest findings from three new studies. Antidepressant and psychotropic medication use in adults often precedes an ADHD diagnosis; however, a new landmark study published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica152 found that use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other antidepressants decreased substantially after adults received an ADHD diagnosis and began treatment with a stimulant or non-stimulant medication. 1 Women received antidepressant prescriptions prior to an ADHD diagnosis much more often than did men, according to the Finnish cohort study of 322,416 adults (66,146 with ADHD and 256,270 without). The researchers attribute this to clinicians misinterpreting or misdiagnosing ADHD symptoms as anxiety or depression - A Doctor’s View on Medical Gaslighting
Aug 26, 2026 · original
The following is a personal essay that reflects the opinion of its author. Too often, a parent with a quiet child who has attention problems will leave the doctor’s office feeling frustrated, ignored, dismissed, or misunderstood. Did the doctor really understand our concerns? Was there any medical gaslighting ? Indeed, medicine still has blind spots about how ADHD is diagnosed and treated, and this is especially true for females and people from racial and ethnic minority groups. After more than 20 years of practicing child and adolescent psychiatry, I still find it helpful to pause and consider what might be influencing me to not get it right. Maybe it’s because of my medical training. In the medical school classroom and on patient rounds, I was encouraged to think about a differential diagnosis, the full range of possibilities. On tests and in real-life practice, however, I was taught t
