- Faces of the Market: Theo from The Market Bread Bar
Mar 17, 2026 · original
For 18 years, Theo has started his mornings the same way - surrounded by the aroma of freshly baked bread, sweet treats and preparing for another lively day at the Adelaide Central Market. As the face behind Market Bread Bar, he’s become a familiar presence to generations of Market shoppers, serving up artisan breads, European favourites and large range of gluten free treats and breads. What keeps him motivated after nearly two decades? “It’s being able to provide unique products and exceptional service,” Theo says. “And ultimately, seeing happy customers with a smile on their face in a dynamic environment like the Market.” His top recommendations for first time visitors is to try their Seeded Rye Sourdough, golden Spanakopita, Cheese Kransky and the much-loved Kataifi. “If I had to choose just one, it would be the Kataifi,” he says. “It brings back childhood memories.” It’s the connecti - Faces of the Market: Saudade Portuguese Custard Tarts

Tucked among the colour and bustle of the Market is a little pocket of Portugal in the form of Saudade, a stall sharing their love of the humble Pastel de Nata (Portuguese Custard Tart). Although Saudade officially opened at the Market in April 2022, its story began much earlier — a short stint as Producer in Residence in 2017 sparked the dream that led to a permanent home.Owners Carla and Miguel love the Market’s vibrancy, where fresh local produce sits alongside international flavours and artisans share not just their goods, but their stories. They say Saudade fits right in, and they appreciate the strong sense of community among stallholders. When asked for a favourite, Carla doesn’t hesitate: “That’s easy! Try Portuguese custard tarts fresh out of the oven… with cinnamon on top.” Their tarts follow a traditional recipe, using high-quality local ingredients to create light, smooth cus - Faces of the Market: Grind Roast Masters

The staff are always ready to help, and if you love it, you can buy beans to take home — they’ll even post them to you. Part of what makes The Grind so special is its home: the vibrant atmosphere of the Market itself. Dec 2, 2025 · original
If you’ve visited the Market anytime in the last two decades, there’s a good chance you’ve been greeted by Taylor — one of the friendly, longstanding faces of McMahon’s Fruit & Veg. With close to 20 years at the stall, Taylor has become the go-to expert for all things fresh, seasonal and delicious. Ask him about his favourite produce, and the answer comes quickly: avocados and tomatoes — simple, versatile and always in demand. But when it comes to recommending something special for first-time visitors, Taylor has a clear favourite: Autumn Crisp grapes. When they’re in season they’re incredible — crunchy and full of flavour, he says. Like many who work in the Market, Taylor doesn’t just love the food, he loves the energy. I really enjoy chatting with customers, he says. The social side of the Market is great, especially during the hustle and bustle of busy days like Saturdays. His advice - Faces of the Market: Paul & Irene from Gourmet to Go
Dec 2, 2025 · original
For over 20 years, husband-and-wife duo Paul and Irene have been the friendly faces behind Gourmet to Go, serving up flaky pies, easy take-home meals, and Irene’s famous jams and marmalades. With a love of good food and a passion for quality, they’ve continued to source new products that cater to all tastes and dietary needs alongside their products you know and love — from a classic pie to a family lasagna and a variety of cultures. A must try are Irene’s award-winning jams and marmalades, handmade in small batches using fruit grown in their own backyard orchard. Plums, apricots, blackberries, cumquats, and even Seville oranges — all hand-cut and quickly cooked to seal in the flavour. Being small batch means more flavour in the jar, Irene says. It really makes a difference to the quality of the end product. First time visiting? Don’t leave without trying the Barossa Pasty — a traditiona - Faces of the Market: Kim from Aubergine’s
Dec 2, 2025 · original
For the past 19 years, Kim has been a familiar face behind the counter at Aubergines, with a warm smile and genuine passion for produce with customers. With nearly two decades surrounded by fruit, vegetables, and herbs, it’s no surprise when she says, I really love fruit and veg – and the regular customers. Everyone here is so friendly! Ask Kim for a favourite, and her answer will likely depend on the time of year. Summer fruit is my favourite — all the beautiful local stone fruit and cherries. You really can’t beat them, she says. But if you’re new to the stall, just try whatever’s in season – it’s always fresh, delicious, and great quality. So, what keeps Kim here after all these years? It’s the unique atmosphere of the Market. You get to know everyone here and it’s convenient to get everything at once. The Market really is the best in SA – better than anywhere else! When it’s time for - Faces of the Market: Terry from The Adelaide Nut
Dec 2, 2025 · original
For the past 11 years, Terry has been a familiar face behind the counter at Adelaide Nut – always happy for a chat or a snack suggestion with regulars and first-time visitors. When asked what Terry likes most about the Market he says: It’s the people, I love who I work with but also getting to know the stallholders and the locals. It’s this mix of familiar faces and new ones from all over the world that makes every day interesting. If you’re new to the stall, you must try Terry’s top favourites: the salted pistachios, Australian dried mango and Riverland dried local stone fruits — apricots, peaches, and nectarines. There’s something nostalgic about them, he says. Customers often tell me they grew up eating these — and you can really taste the quality. And if you’re wondering why everything tastes so fresh, it’s because all their nuts are roasted in-house daily. Now that’s commitment to f - Faces of the Market: Tai from Thompson’s Fruit and Veg & Michael’s Fruit and Veg
Dec 2, 2025 · original
If you’ve ever wandered through the Market with a craving for the crunch of a perfectly crisp apple or fresh produce, chances are you’ve stopped by Thompson’s or Michael’s. The stall has been serving locals and visitors alike for over 40 years with new owners Tai (pictured with wife, LinhChi), LinhChi and Balbir taking the reins of Thompson’s a decade ago, and Michael’s three years ago. But for Tai, the Market isn’t just about business — it’s about community, culture and connection. There’s a rich history here, he says. Every day brings someone new. From office workers grabbing lunch, to visitors from overseas to school kids learning where their food comes from. When it comes to his favourites, the answer is easy: apples. But not just any apples — locally grown Adelaide Hills apples which are crisp and crunchy. When they’re in season, they’re unbeatable, he says.
