World’s Highest Marathon, Ojos del Salado, Chile

February 2026…after months of planning and organising with BecomingX and our partners High Mountain , we set off to the remote Atacama Desert in Chile to begin the ‘World’s Highest Marathon’ expedition from the top of a mountain called Ojos del Salado. The aim was to get a new Guinness world record , a gruelling expedition to run the distance of a marathon from the highest point ever attempted. The marathon to some extent plays into a trend for ‘darecations’, or physically demanding adventures in some of the world’s toughest places, as this BBC Travel article describes. I have certainly seen this trend evolve over many years as an adventure travel operator. Indeed, there is another one next year in Bolivia which will attempt the highest consistent altitude for a marathon on the famous ‘Road of Jewels’ which will maintain an elevation of above 4395m. Ojos del Salado is 6893m (22,615 feet)

January 2016 This year we had a team of twelve clients from four different countries – Iran, Ireland, England, South Africa and Argentina – and three guides to take the team to the top of the Americas. Gavin was joined by Greg Coe and Pasang Tendi Sherpa from Nepal who had the second of the Seven Summits in his sights. The team met up in Mendoza as usual for the pre-trip administration, including buying the Aconcagua permit which this year increased to USD$800 per person. Every year it has increased and one wonders how much more the clientele will take. We travelled to Puente del Inca and then hit the trail for the walk to Confluencia and then up to Plaza del Mulas on the Horcones trail , base camp for the next few weeks. A new destination to the Sierra Nevada in southern Spain beckons. What a beautiful place and a lovely hotel we found… in a small village called Mairena. This is on our list of new places to visit and we plan to offer two trips here initially. The pace of life, the food, the culture and the beauty of this area really attracted us, and because of the economic crisis we know that the tourist dollar really does make a difference to these communities. MOUNT ELBRUS IS THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN EUROPE. Its summit is 18,510 feet (5642 meters) above sea level and it is located in Russia. Twenty years ago things seemed a bit simpler, climbers chose from a narrow range of leather trekking boots and generally a pair of ‘double mountain’ or plastic mountaineering boots. Nowadays there’s a boot for every type of terrain and altitude, and manufacturers are keen for us to buy more boots obviously. The choice is huge and confusing. There are some obvious criteria to consider when choosing high altitude boots, not least the highest altitude reached; obviously the higher you go, the warmer the boots need to be as the body becomes less able to warm itself. Clearly type of terrain is also important, as is the requirement for using crampons. Boots are expensive so another criteria would be future aspirations for using them on other mountains. Anyone visiting Embu on a Medical Elective or to volunteer with the Moving Mountains Trust will spend time in our Adventure Alternative guest house, located in the quiet suburbs of Embu. The guest house is about 30 minutes walk from the Embu Provincial Hospital where Elective students are placed and about 45 minutes walk from the town centre, in fact most of Embu town is walking distance and there is a young and friendly feel to the area with a number of different University and College Campuses located in the region. Our Rescue Centre for Street Children is in the town centre, and from here it is about another 10 minute walk to the likes of Embu County and Urban Primary schools, which have also been developed by the Moving Mountains Trust and are located next to the slums which surround most of the town centre.
