The richest U.S. sports league should be able to afford better than this. Jared Newman | September 16, 2026 Football fans who spent $15 per month on an NFL+ Premium subscription received a rude awakening on Sunday afternoon, when the NFL app refused to stream. As numerous users reported on Reddit —and as I experienced first-hand—NFL’s app and website failed to stream its usual NFL Network and NFL Redzone feeds as the action began. The official NFL+ account on X eventually apologized for the issue , which it claimed to resolve more than an hour into game time. While a one-off glitch might be forgivable, the NFL app is routinely one of the worst experiences in sports streaming, with subpar video quality, lackluster features, and a history of reliability issues. Given that the NFL generates by far the most revenue of any U.S. sports league, surely it can do better than this embarrassment. N - What a free iPhone will cost you

Finding the best phone deals Plus: New Apple gear, free file compressor, and how to remember where you put stuff Jared Newman | September 15, 2026 Hey there! Heads up: Next week’s newsletter will arrive on Wednesday instead of Tuesday, on account of Yom Kippur on Monday. Thanks for your patience! Apple announced new iPhones this week, and if you’re in the United States, the cheapest way to get them is through one of the big three wireless carriers. But while they love to yell about getting a new iPhone “on us,” they tend to bury important details in the fine print. To unlock their best deals, you’ll likely need one of their most expensive wireless plans, plus a phone to trade in that’s no more than a few year - LG’s smart TV snooping scandal

Worried that your smart TV is spying on you? Here’s what will help, and what won’t. Jared Newman | September 9, 2026 It’s time for another round of panic about smart TV privacy, with LG taking its turn in the hot seat. The impetus is a 135-minute video from Gamers Nexus , digging into the data that LG can collect from its users. The most shocking claim is that LG’s TVs can persistently listen to what you’re saying even when the power is off (albeit only if you plug in an external USB webcam), but the report also delves into the privacy ramifications of hands-free voice control and automatic content recognition. The video quickly went viral, drawing millions of views and prompting some alarming headlines. (“ Disconnect your LG television from the internet, now ,” for instance.) While many of the core claims aren’t new or even unique to LG , I’m all for more folks realizing exactly what th - Stop your phone from waking you at night

Calendar Event Creator Surely I’m not the only one who finds calendar event creation to be overly tedious. Instead of fiddling with time boxes and text fields in Google Calendar, I’ve always wanted to just type all the details on a single line, click a button, and be done. So, here’s a little tool I made with Claude for doing that. Type in a phrase like “Pool party at Tyler’s from 1 to 4 on Sunday, 123 Fair - The increasing cost of ad-free streaming

And how to push back against the price hikes. Jared Newman | September 2, 2026 Ad-free streaming used to be one of the biggest benefits of cutting the cable TV cord. Now it’s become a luxury. Inspired by some new research into the growing price gap between ad-supported and ad-free streaming, I decided to calculate how much the cost to avoid commercials has increased over time. Depending on which services you have, you could be paying an extra $42.50 just to skip ads, up 60% from a few years ago. Not all hope is lost for affordable ad-free TV, but you might have to a bit creative to get it. The increasing ad-free tax My impetus for writing this is a new report from Ampere Analysis about the growing gulf in price between ad-free and ad-supported streaming. The study found that globally over the past three years, the ad-free tiers of Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ have increased by $1.6 - Why I just completely wiped my computer
