The COVID-19 and flu vaccine clinics are open to Saugus residents and Town of Saugus employees. The clinic dates are as follows: Friday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Saugus Senior Center (466 Central St.); Thursday, Oct. 8, from noon-5 p.m. at the Saugus Town Hall Auditorium (second floor); Thursday, Oct. 15, from 1-5 p.m. at the Saugus Town Hall Auditorium; and Friday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Saugus Senior Center. By Dom Nicastro Saugus High’s football team showed a spark in the passing game despite falling to Hamilton-Wenham, while the girls soccer team responded to a pair of losses by earning a 3-3 tie against Winthrop and the volleyball team continued to battle through a difficult opening stretch. Football falls to Hamilton-Wenham, prepares for home opener Saugus remains in search of its first victory under new Head Coach Greg Bluestein after a 35-6 loss to Hamilton-Wenham. The Sachems’ lone touchdown came through the air, with quarterback Eli Fialho connecting with senior captain Paxton Ferraro for a 44-yard score. Ferraro finished with four catches for more than 100 yards, giving Fialho a productive target as the Saugus passing game continues to develop. “He does everything he can to help the team all the time,” Bluestein said of Ferraro. “He did a great job. Eli loves throwing to him.” Fialh - Saugus Town Meeting Committee circulates a zoning survey

Here’s the public’s chance to share their views on how the town should proceed in its review of zoning By Mark E. Vogler The chair of the Town Meeting Zoning Review Committee is calling for more town residents to participate in a Saugus Zoning Survey that it circulated two weeks ago at Saugus Founders Day. “We got less than 25 surveys filled out so far,” Precinct 2 Town Meeting Member Peter A. Rossetti, Jr. said this week. “If we could get 100 responses, that would be great. Hopefully, 100 would be doable. With 26,000 people in town, 100 is relatively a small sample. If I stand out in front of the Post Office for a day, I should be able to get that,” he said. “The survey will be a significant part of the committee’s work. We’re trying not to make this a decision of four or five people. That’s how we got involved in the zoning problems in the first place. That’s why we are looking for mor - The Sounds of Saugus

By Mark E. Vogler Good morning, Saugus When it comes to planning special community events, what a difference the weather can make. Just a few days ago, it seemed like tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 26) was going to be the most encompassing day of the year on the Saugus Community Calendar. There were three major events that were sure to draw some big crowds. Saugus Olympics Day at World Series Park – featuring a visit from U.S. Olympics figure skating medalist Nancy Kerrigan – was expected to draw some great interest. Meanwhile, Breakheart Reservation was preparing to host its Annual Fall Family Festival. And dozens of volunteers who enjoy being at Saugus Center for the annual return of the Pumpkin Patch were expected to congregate on the lawn of First Congregational Church to help unload a truck full of pumpkins from the Navajo Reservation. But plans for a super, multi-community events weeken - Saugus Gardens in the Fall

Here’s what’s blooming in town this week to make your walks more enjoyable By Laura Eisener There’s a chill in the air as we turn the page to fall. The autumnal equinox was Tuesday, and the full Harvest Moon will be tomorrow, Saturday the 26th. Most tree leaves are still green, and it will still be several weeks before Saugus reaches its peak of fall foliage. Meanwhile, many summer flowers are still there to brighten our gardens. Fall planting season is well underway! Flower buds are appearing on hardy mums and other late fall plants, and those in the nurseries are already in full bloom. Warm soil encourages faster root development than would occur in spring, when the soil is so often still cold and damp. Most grass seeds actually sprout best in warm but not hot soils, and there is less competition from weeds like crabgrass. As long as you are able to water new seedlings and plants, fall - Nor’easter forecasts lead to rescheduling of Saugus Olympics Day to Oct. 17

An early Fall Nor’easter that is expected to hit Massachusetts with heavy rain and strong winds this weekend prompted organizers of the Saugus Olympics Day at World Series Park to cancel the event originally planned for tomorrow and reschedule it to Oct. 17. “The very inclement weather predicted for Saturday, Sept. 26, has caused the date of the event to be moved,” World Series Park Superintendent Bob Davis said earlier this week. Nancy Kerrigan, a former Olympic medalist in figure skating, will take part in the opening ceremony — set for 11 a.m. on Oct. 17 — and will be available to meet and greet those in attendance. A baseball tournament involving Challenger Baseball teams from the area will start at 9 a.m. The event, which will include music and live entertainment, will last through 4 p.m. “This type of event has great meaning and satisfaction,” Davis said. For nine years, World Seri
