Listening Beneath the Surface: Advancing Arctic Underwater Noise Research What happens under the surface when an expedition cruise vessel is at anchor, conducting a landing, or operating zodiacs in an Arctic fjord? This question lies at the heart of Sound-Cruising, a joint research project by AECO, the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), and Aarhus University in collaboration with Arctic expedition cruise operators. Building on knowledge generated through a recently concluded successful underwater noise project in the Canadian Arctic, and a pilot study conducted in Svalbard in 2023, Sound-Cruising represents the next step in understanding how expedition cruise operations contribute to underwater radiated noise in polar waters. Siv-Hege brings extensive leadership experience and a strong background in organizational development, management, and staff leadership. Throughout her career, she has been involved in building and developing organizations from start-up phases to stable operations. Most recently, she served for eight years as General Manager of Tromsøbadet, one of Northern Norway’s largest public swimming and recreation facilities. Her educational background includes tourism studies and a Master in Management. With her combination of leadership experience, organizational insight, and understanding of the tourism sector, Siv-Hege will be a valuable addition to the AECO Secretariat and its work on behalf of the membership. New Grant Supports AECO’s Work to Reduce Expedition Cruise Emissions

New funding will help AECO members improve emissions reporting and identify opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Arctic operations. AECO has received NOK 400,000 from the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund to continue its work on reducing emissions from expedition cruise operations. Together with previous funding, the Fund has invested NOK 1 million in AECO’s Climate Change Project. Community Dialogue Shapes Expedition Cruise Tourism in Pond Inlet With an estimated 20 expedition cruise calls expected during the 2026 season, community representatives, tourism partners, government agencies, and cruise industry stakeholders came together in Pond Inlet in July to discuss how tourism is experienced, managed, and developed in the community. On July 25, Viking Polaris became the first AECO member vessel to call at Pond Inlet during the 2026 season, bringing approximately 350 guests ashore. The final decision on proposed amendments to Greenland’s Tourism Act has been postponed until the autumn parliamentary session. The proposal has been referred to the Business and Mineral Committee for further review, meaning that any changes are unlikely to take effect before the 2027 season. For AECO members, the most significant proposed amendments are: A clarification of the possibility of obtaining exemptions from licensing requirements in areas with limited tourism infrastructure (§11a). New Study: Expedition Cruise Ships Among Quietest in Arctic Waters Most expedition cruise vessels operating in the Canadian Arctic produce lower underwater noise levels than cargo ships, tankers, and bulk carriers measured in the same areas, according to results from a collaborative research program measuring ship noise in Arctic waters. The findings draw on more than 66 vessel noise measurements from 11 operators, covering 20 expedition cruise vessels. Inside AECO’s New Project to Reduce Underwater Noise As concern grows over the impact of vessel noise on Arctic marine life, AECO is launching a new two-year effort to turn research into practical guidance for expedition cruise operators. We spoke with project lead, Mark van der Hulst, about what lies ahead for the two-year period.
