The Aegis Trust is deeply concerned by the summons issued to 26 current and former staff of the Srebrenica Memorial Center by Republika Srpska police, who have given no clear reason for doing so. When states threaten institutions that educate about and commemorate genocide – and are allowed to do so unchecked – a dangerous precedent is set, not just for Bosnia but for genocide memory everywhere. Srebrenica’s survivors and their families continue to live with trauma every day. Pressure like this achieves nothing except to compound their pain. Last week, Coffee Farm officially opened its new outlet in Nottingham — marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the board of the Aegis Trust, representatives of Nottingham’s Rwandan community, and colleagues from Rwanda who have been at the heart of the project from the beginning. On 9 June, the project ‘Strengthening Educational Capacities at Rwanda’s Memorial Sites’ was launched by UNESCO in partnership with the Aegis Trust, the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE), and the Rwanda National Commission for UNESCO (CNRU) during a high-level event held at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The initiative seeks to enhance the educational role of Rwanda’s memorial sites by equipping educators, developing trauma-informed learning resources, and strengthening collaboration between memorials, schools and communities. Accompanied by his delegation, General Schill toured the memorial’s exhibits that trace the causes, reality, and consequences of the Genocide, as well as Rwanda’s remarkable journey of rebuilding, reconciliation, and resilience over the past three decades.
