Do you know how hard it was not to title this post “I smelled London, I smelled France”? Last month I was very lucky to take a trip to London, with a quick mini-trip to Paris sandwiched in. I made a list (and a map!) of everything I wanted to smell while we were there, and my family humored me to a ridiculous degree. It’s been a very hard past six months, and I have to say, blissing out and just smelling stuff was truly restorative to my soul. (You know, aside from seeing beloved family and old friends.) I got to visit one of my favorite places in the world, Liberty , and add a new favorite place in Paris, Officine Universelle Buly 1803 . CLR is a beloved brand in the candle community, which is a corny opening sentence but also completely true. They’re inclusive and diverse, owned and operated by LGBTQIA+ people of color who donate a percentage of their profits back to the community, so this isn’t Big Candle, this is Cool Candle. Most importantly, their scents, throw, and burn are always top-notch, so I was excited when they offered to send me their new Pink collection to review. The Pink Collection Every time I smell these, I change my favorite. The main thing I love is that none of these are predictable sugary or bubblegum pink scents. They’re all deep and layered, and not what you’d expect from a Barbie-pink candle. CLR is so good about that with all their offerings. I started this account four years ago (!) so I could have a place to talk about candles and scents and all the ways they make me feel. I also wanted to review candles honestly , because I google the hell out of anything I’m tempted to purchase without smelling first, and I always appreciate finding the odd detail that seals the deal (referencing another scent I love) or makes me abandon my cart (any mention of jasmine or the ocean). Finding the candle community on Instagram has been wonderful – my husband always says “How are your smell friends?” I love all my new smell friends, just living in my phone, talking about smells! Over the years a few kind candle companies have even offered to send me a candle, which was like the height of my dreams when this began ! Last summer my friend Jess, my lip product enabler and guiding light, asked me if I’d heard of the REFY Lip Blush . It’s time for a late spring/early summer meeting of candle club! Candle club is like the Babysitters Club only we’re all adults who are allowed to have candy in our rooms and there are no children involved; we just talk about candles. I didn’t even bother with a Top Candles of 2022 post because I knew my number one candle was no longer for sale. It was an Anthropologie seasonal candle called Sequoia Cypress that was already sold out on their website the day I bought it in-store in late September. I loved it so much that I went back and bought another, and then spent all winter wishing I’d bought more before it disappeared from my life forever. OR SO I THOUGHT, because they have a candle in stock now that smells just like it. It’s called Lavender & Balsam and: sure. I don’t really get a lot of lavender? My friend Millie DM’d me the other night asking for candle recs. This is my favorite kind of ask and I went to town with my answers, and then realized the next day duh, I have a blog where I could post this . Disclaimer: if you are able to sniff first in person, I always recommend that. Find a bougie store near you and make sure you like it. Never buy blind! If you love Diptyque Feu de Bois and Boy Smells Hinoki Fantome, try: LAFCO Feu de Bois – The other big FDB in the game. If you can’t sniff in person, maybe try the $20 4 oz tin. This feels like a pretty safe bet but it does skew a bit more toward leather and vanilla than the Diptyque FDB. (It was originally called Ski House or something so that explains the vibe.) Candlewood Firewood – This is the only one on this list that I recommend buying blind. If you like Diptyque FDB and camping, I guarantee you’ll like this. It smells exactly

The newest addition to my spring candle roster (do we need a 2023 roster update? we probably do) looks like October but smells like May. Burke & Hare Co’s Cemetery Gates is a fresh blend of sweet grass, hay, and earth wrapped in a label that looks straight out of Sabrina (the Sally Draper one, not Melissa Joan Hart). Burke & Hare has their whole aesthetic nailed down tight (starting with that name!) and while it’s not my personal aesthetic, I have to respect the attention to detail. The vibe is: lots of eyeliner but also hay I guess there are probably people out there who buy a candle just because the vessel looks good on their coffee table and to these people I say [VAMPIRE BACK OF THROAT HISS] and also Live a little, Amanda!!! I never thought, when starting this blog three years ago, that through it I’d discover my nemesis. And I never ever thought that in all the realms of possibility, my nemesis would be Candles Who Claim To Smell Like Tennis Balls. This feels anti-climactic, in the grand scheme of nemeses, but honestly I lucked out. I am fully prepared to tackle this nemesis at each and every encounter. Two months ago I asked Instagram for some curly hair styling product recommendations. I was in a rut after trying to replace all my old DevaCurl products the year before, but not ever falling in love with the replacements. If there’s one thing the internet comes through for, it’s hair, so I bought many mini sizes and tried lots of your recs and was just… not blown away by any of them! But then realized I was way overdue for a haircut and that probably wasn’t giving any of these products a fair shake.
