Timber What? When I first started this blog, one of my objectives was to experience watches that were unique and less known. It’s great to own the classics, but life’s always a bit more fun when you inject your own bit of colour into it. Singapore gets a little cookie cutter at times and there’s no harm being a little different. I was hence thoroughly intrigued when I chanced upon the Casio Timber Cruiser. Firstly, what even is a Timber Cruiser? And how did this charming time piece come to be? Why was no one talking about it? Whenever I head overseas for a trip, I make it a point to check out the local horology scene. There’s a crazy amount of watches in the world, and there’s so much more to explore out there beyond the sunny shores I call home. Going somewhere foreign and new, you never know what gem or bargain is hiding just round the corner, and its always a joy to discover new watches that you simply would have never known. I’ve crawled through the maze that is Nakano Broadway, spoken to the amazing folks down under at the Melbourne Time & Tide studio, and found myself delighted at Mr Jones Watches’ flagship store in Seven Dials, London. Singaporeans are a pretty serious bunch when it comes to food. At any given time, there’s sure to be a long queue somewhere, as people sweat under the sweltering hot sun waiting in line to try the latest and greatest. Despite our relatively short history, a number of traditional foods have developed, with stalwarts swearing by their favourite establishments since (probably?) the days of our independence. For them, the age old adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t change it” definitely applies and I agree that there is definitely truth to that. I for one, think that the best laksa in Singapore is at Sungei Road, and it’s that same, consistent broth painstakingly boiled over a charcoal fire, a recipe unchanged since the 50s (or so I would like to believe) that makes it so lip-smackingly good. A dizzying recollection of how fun Singapore’s largest independent/microbrand watch fair can be. When I first popped by Spring Sprang Sprung 2 years ago, it was held in a slightly hidden corner of Lavender at XM Studios. The venue seemed to be reflective of the event – niche and targeted at collectors who could appreciate the joys of indie timekeeping. Suffice to say, I’m part of the target market and I thoroughly enjoyed weaving from booth to booth and uncovering new horological gems. I wasn’t able to attend the event in 2024, so when the 2025 edition popped up in my mailbox, I made sure to save the date. This year’s event was held at the National Design Centre, a beautiful Art Deco heritage building dedicated to design related programmes and exhibitions. A closer look at the Italian Microbrand’s U3 series . Back in my younger days, I remember clamouring to the television in the evenings after rushing my homework earlier in the afternoon. The watch world tends to be a pretty serious place; everyone has an opinion about what’s good what isn’t, and critics circle about like starving piranhas, waiting to tear into the next watch that happens to swim their way. Seiko calls this one the “Night Vision” – I call it the Seiko Lightsaber. Am I the only one that sees the minute hand in this manner? The optimal watch size has been a hot topic of debate as far as I can remember, and there’s a great deal of subjectivity to it with fads coming and going. The world of watch mod-ing offers boundless possibilities, but should you take the plunge? Dragons…dragons and more dragons The Chinese New Year is fast approaching and we have once again reached that time of the year where every supermarket has “恭喜恭喜” on a perpetual loop. You can feel a sense of energy pulsating in the air, as retail outlets throw promotion after promotion at you. Safe to say, the Chinese New Year is one of the major peak seasons for the retail world (especially here in Singapore), and everyone is trying to cash in on the Dragon year – watch brands included. While you can definitely have one too many pineapple tarts, watches are thankfully calorie free and you can’t have too much of a good thing. The dragon motif makes an excellent outlet for creative design expression, and the releases thus far have not disappointed.
