    NicaNotes September 17, 2026 Ortega, Elections, and the Context Western Media Won’t Print By Richard Balzano [Richard M. Balzano is an historian and political analyst peddling truths at several institutions of higher learning, quietly devoted to the art of sedition and comfortably resigned to the peripheral left. This article was first published in the New Hampshire Gazette on August 21, 2026.] Balzano notes: “Nicaragua is behaving as though the United States poses a threat to Nicaraguan sovereignty. How could they possibly have gotten that idea?” “Crackdown.” “Democratic backsliding.” “Authoritarian grip.” Journalists persecuted, opposition parties crushed—and now, according to the latest eruption from the Western press, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has abolished elections. The peripheral left offers another interpretation: Ortega is preventing U.S.-backed political organizations
  3. NicaNotes: Chicopipe, Nicaragua, August 11, 1985: Lest We Forget What Our Wars Really Mean
    Sep 10, 2026 · original
    NicaNotes September 10, 2026 By James Phillips (James Phillips is a cultural anthropologist. He and his wife Lucy Edwards were Witness for Peace team members in Nicaragua in 1985-87. He has returned to Nicaragua many times and has written about various aspects of Nicaragua and its relationship to the U.S.) My wife Lucy and I lived in Nicaragua (1985-1987) during the Contra War of the 1980s as members of the long-term team of Witness for Peace. Our work was to document the effects of the war in rural communities, to accompany the people however we could, and to arrange for fact finding delegations from the U.S. The following is taken with a very few edits from my field journal written soon after we investigated the events described below. I tried deliberately to know and write the names of all the victims. They deserve to be remembered, now on the forty-first anniversary of their deaths.

Against the backdrop of Israel’s renewed attacks on Palestine, the World Court is set to begin public hearings on September 7 th on Nicaragua’s legal proceedings against Germany for aiding and abetting genocide in Gaza by providing weapons to Israel. During its arguments, Nicaragua will certainly avail itself of its experience taking the most powerful nation
  5. NicaNotes: Marking the 46th Anniversary of the End of the Nicaraguan Literacy Campaign
    Aug 27, 2026 · original
    NicaNotes August 27, 2026 Marking the 46 th Anniversary of the End of the Nicaraguan Literacy Campaign By the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign of the United Kingdo When the Sandinistas came to power in 1979 their key priority was building “a new model of society based on equality, wellbeing, solidarity and social justice.” Nicaragua’s 1980 literacy Campaign was part of that model. August 23 rd marks forty-six years since the end of a six-month literacy Campaign during which over 400,000 Nicaraguans learned basic reading and writing skills for the first time. On August 23, 1980, the brigadistas were welcomed in Managua after reducing the country’s illiteracy rate from over 50% to 12%. The literacy Campaign was a means of integrating all aspects of this model: eradicating illiteracy and poverty, building understanding between Nicaraguans of different classes and backgrounds; gender equality;

    NicaNotes August 20, 2026 Despite U.S. Hybrid Warfare and Sanctions, Nicaragua’s Socialist Government is Building Infrastructure and Providing Services at Impressive Rate PART TWO By Ben Grosscup [Ben Grosscup is a traveling folksinger who uses songs for political education in the anti-imperialist movement. This article was first published in Covert Action Magazine on July 8, 2026. In Part One we learned about the visit of the delegation (organized by the Casa Ben Linder) to Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast. In Part Two, the group visits an agricultural cooperative.] A Utopian Experiment? Improving the lives of Nicaragua’s people is not merely a question of infrastructure. Nor will such changes alone solve all the country’s problems. Nicaragua, like all countries, contains internal contradictions and divisions. Early in my life, I took inspiration from utopian theories about radically transfo
  8. New State Department Video Celebrates Monroe Doctrine! Support HRes. 1056 to Annul the Doctrine!
    Aug 18, 2026 · original
    On August 11, 2026, last Tuesday, the US State Department released a video , narrated by US Ambassador to Panama Kevin Merino Cabrera, reviewing the history of the famous 1823 statement by President James Monroe known as the Monroe Doctrine . The video glorifies the Doctrine, not the early Monroe Doctrine, which merely declared the Western Hemisphere off limits to future European colonization but rather its second life as a declaration of US dominance over the Western Hemisphere. Click HERE to write to your representative asking them to co-sponsor the resolution. The Olney Note of 1895 marked a change in US policy with the adoption of imperial pretentions. (State Department video) The highly produced video, only 5 ½ minutes long, notes that the US changed from a country that had declared itself free from empire in 1776 to a country with imperial pretentions in 1895 when Secretary of Stat

    All photos in this alert by David Escobar The epicenter of Monday’s August 10, 2026 earthquake in Colombia was along the border of the Departments of Chocó and Valle de Cauca, a remote area near San José del Palmar, which has around 5,000 people. The urban centers most affected are Buenaventura and Cali (headquarters for our sister organization, the Pacific Center for Human Rights aka the Centro Pazífico, whose office was destroyed.) Both cities experienced significant loss of life, as well as property and infrastructure damage. Estimates continue to climb, but as of this writing, according to various sources, the number of dead is counted around 250, with close to 300 missing, and 3700 wounded. The earthquake hit an area with thick forests and difficult terrain, with a varied rural population. While Cali and Buenaventura (three hours to Cali’s east) have the highest percentages of an Af

Webinar focus: Following the loss of the elections in 1990, Nicaragua’s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) vowed to “govern from below.” Over the next 17 years, three US-backed neoliberal governments privatized health care and education. Thousands of people went to the cemetery before their time. Under IMF programs the poor got poorer and the rich got richer. During this same period, the FSLN worked closely with its grassroots base through unions, student groups and social movements to help people survive, organize, influence, and eventually return to power. The FSLN’s experiences in opposition to neoliberal governance provide important lessons for activists around the world working to effect change today. Featured Speaker: Va
