  1. AI skills discussion at UNGA, New York
    Sep 25, 2026 · original
Artificial intelligence is changing how young people learn, work and access information. Yet the skills needed to question, decide, collaborate and act with purpose start developing long before a young person first uses an AI tool. This was the focus of Beyond the Algorithm: Why Human Skills Are the Answer to an AI-Shaped World , held at Education House in New York during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on 22 September. Aflatoun International’s Director of Strategic Partnerships and Development, Kirsten Theuns, joined Arfa Masroor, a student ambassador with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship’s World Series of Innovation, and Nich Haber from Pearson Career Ready. The discussion was moderated by J.D. LaRock, Chief Executive Officer of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). The session formed part of Education House’s wider programme on Education fo

From goals to action Finding a job can feel overwhelming, especially when young people are unsure which opportunities match their skills and interests. 4. Choosing Her Own Path – North Gem Community Development Program Kenya’s Future for Children project
    Sep 23, 2026 · original
For Magdalene Akinyi Otieno from Siaya County, social and financial education became a foundation for making her own choices. As part of North Gem Community Development Program Kenya’s Future for Children project, Magdalene joined the Aflatoun Club at her school. There, she developed practical skills in self-awareness, saving, planning and decision-making. After completing primary school in 2024, Magdalene was introduced to the AflaYouth curriculum, which opened up new possibilities in entrepreneurship and employability. While her parents expected her to move directly into secondary school, Magdalene chose a vocational pathway that matched her goals. She enrolled in a one-year Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy course, completing it in 2025. She did not wait until the end of her training to put her learning into practice. Magdalene began offering affordable hair and beauty services in her c
  5. We came to teach savings – Rise Cohort 4 Programme, powered by Sightsavers Zambia
    Sep 22, 2026 · original
When Jones Sambaombe joined the Rise Cohort 4 Programme, powered by Sightsavers Zambia, as a mentor, he expected to teach young people with disabilities about saving, investing and managing money. Instead, he found that the first step was not financial knowledge. It was confidence. Many participants already understood why saving matters. Yet some doubted that they could earn an income or build a future for themselves. They had often heard more about their limitations than their potential. This reflects a key principle of Aflatoun’s Social and Financial Education approach: young people need self-awareness, self-confidence and the belief that they can create change in their own lives and communities. “Before this programme, I thought saving was only for people with stable jobs,” one participant said. “Now I know I can start with whatever I have.” The sessions focused on starting small, bui

  10. Learning that lasts
    Sep 11, 2026 · original
Education is often measured through numbers: learners enrolled, courses completed and certificates awarded. However, two recent personal stories remind us that its real value appears in the choices people make long after learning ends. The reflections were shared by Bilkisu Lawal and Abel Hedeto. Their experiences happened years apart, but both show how relevant education can build confidence, strengthen careers and shape lives. Skills for work and life Bilkisu Lawal works in sustainable agriculture, nutrition security and the circular economy. She recently completed an Employability Skills course delivered through Solve Education! in partnership with Aflatoun International. The course covered communication, teamwork, professionalism, problem-solving, assertiveness and workplace ethics. For Bilkisu, these were not distant theories. They reflected situations she had already encountered du
