- Angola takes another step towards the accreditation of its laboratories
Sep 29, 2026 · original
Geneva, Switzerland, 29 September 2026- /African Media Agency (AMA)/ – The World Health Organization (WHO) has supported the National Institute for Health Research (INIS) in assessing and improving the quality systems of its diagnostic laboratories for yellow fever, measles, and rubella. This is an important step towards achieving international accreditation and strengthening epidemiological surveillance in Angola. Laboratories play a key role in the early detection of outbreaks, the confirmation of suspected cases, and the monitoring of priority public health diseases. Access to accurate and timely laboratory results enables public health authorities to make informed decisions and respond more effectively to health threats. As part of the mission, a comprehensive assessment was conducted of the quality control processes at the INIS Immunology Laboratory, including a review of the pre-an - WHO Africa launches Health Campaign Digitization initiative to advance health campaign planning

Geneva, Switzerland, 28 September 2026- /African Media Agency (AMA)/ – The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa is advancing the digital transformation of public health delivery with the launch of the DIGIT Health Campaign Data Digitization Project, a regional initiative designed to modernize how health campaigns are planned, coordinated, implemented and monitored across the continent. The initiative builds on growing experience across the Region in digitizing large-scale health campaigns. The DIGIT platform is designed as an open, modular and interoperable digital infrastructure that provides countries with a unified interface for planning, managing and monitoring vaccination campaigns, reducing reliance on fragmented and non-interoperable tools. The platform is being deployed through a first phase which will include seven pilot countries, laying the foundation for - Ghana Invites Francophone Africa into Digital Assets Dialogue at DASA 2026

Beyond mapping out central bank regulations and real-world asset tokenization under the theme “From Policy to Prosperity,” the two-day summit launched a deliberate initiative: extending an open invitation for Francophone West Africa to join the dialogue, share in regional innovation, and help shape the continent’s digital asset movement. Building the “Francophone Bridge” While Francophone stakeholders are often left out of major technology gatherings in Anglophone country Ghana, DASA 2026 pledged to mark a turning point. Geneva, Switzerland, 24 September 2026- /African Media Agency (AMA)/ – A team of experts led by the Regulation and Prequalification Department at the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters conducted a technical assistance visit to the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) Medicines Quality Control Laboratory (MQCL) from 22 to 24 September 2026. The visit served as a preliminary assessment of the MQCL’s readiness for the WHO Listing of Quality Control Laboratories (WLQCL), following EFDA’s expression of interest in being assessed. In 2025, EFDA attained WHO Maturity Level 3 for medicines regulation across all eight applicable regulatory functions, including laboratory testing, as assessed using the WHO Global Benchmarking Tool (GBT). WHO listing is a separate process, and this mission marks a foundational step toward WLQCL. Washington, USA, 22 September 2026 -/African Media Agency (AMA)/ – Tunisia’s economy has settled into a path of slow growth, and is vulnerable to rising import prices and imbalances in public finances. One key determinant of the country’s economic prospects is how it manages severe water scarcity, according to the World Bank’s latest Tunisia Economic Monitor, “Tunisia’s Water Challenge: From Scarcity to Resilience .” Economic growth reached 2.7 percent in 2025 and 2.4 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2026, driven by a recovery in agriculture, mechanical and electrical industries, and tourism. Growth is projected to ease to 2.3 percent in 2026 and average 2.1 percent over 2027-2028. While unemployment declined to 14.9 percent in the second quarter of 2026, women continue to face significantly weaker labor market outcomes, with unemployment standing at 21.6 percent, nearly twice t - Yango Fellowship brings together tech talent from six African countries to build locally rooted solutions

Sep 17, 2026 · original
Geneva, Switzerland, 17 September 2026- /African Media Agency (AMA)/ – Dementia is increasingly becoming a major public health challenge in Africa, with an estimated 1.9 million people currently living with the condition across the region. The number is expected to rise significantly as populations grow and life expectancy increases. Beyond its health impact, dementia places a heavy economic burden on families and societies, costing an estimated US$15.6 billion annually in the African Region. Much of this burden falls on unpaid caregivers, predominantly women and family members, who spend an average of 12.9 hours per day providing care, far exceeding the global average of 7.8 hours. Despite the growing burden, dementia remains underdiagnosed and receives limited attention within health systems. As of 2024, none of the 47 countries in the WHO African Region had a national dementia plan, e - Djibouti Launches AgriConnect Compact to Strengthen Food Security, Boost Private Investment and Create Jobs

The announcement comes as the foundation launches its 10th annual Goalkeepers Report , which this year focuses on the urgent actions needed to ensure that AI helps narrow gaps between the richest and poorest rather than widening them. The 2026 report, Make This Matter: AI, Equity, and the Choice We Can’t Delay, makes the case that AI’s trajectory is not fixed. The window to influence who benefits, and how soon, is short. By Peter Frimpong Manso & Angela Akua Asante ACCRA, Ghana, 07 September 2026 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/ – Across the African continent, invisible walls limit our shared prosperity. These are not merely physical infrastructure, but a double-barreled disconnect: on one side, payment systems that cannot talk to each other. On the other side, a language divide (predominantly English vs French) that keeps natural business partners operating in isolation. In trade and high-level strategy, we call this Africa’s “Not Talking to Each Other” problem. Let’s consider the friction facing a Ghanaian merchant buying textiles from Lomé (Togo), agricultural inputs from Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso), or electronics from Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire). Despite geographical contiguity, executing a cross-border payment between the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS) and the West African CFA franc (XOF) frequently forces local ba - Zimbabwe Must Leverage Macroeconomic Stability to Accelerate Growth and Create 230,000 New Jobs by 2040

Washington, USA, 04 September 2026 -/African Media Agency (AMA)/ – Following recent progress on macroeconomic stabilization, Zimbabwe has a timely opportunity to build long-term economic momentum and expand formal job opportunities, according to a new World Bank Group report launched today. The Zimbabwe Growth and Jobs Report notes that fiscal and monetary discipline brought local currency inflation into single digits in early 2026, for the first time since 1997, and supported real GDP growth averaging nearly 6% between 2021 and 2025. At the same time, economic growth has not yet generated widespread improvements in productive employment or household incomes. Currently, 80% of Zimbabweans work in the informal sector with median earnings of $130 per month, and nearly half the population lives below the international poverty line. The analysis shows that labor has largely shifted from agri
