  1. PICS | ‘Beyond terrible’: Inside KZN education’s crumbling Durban offices
    Sep 30, 2026 · original
Broken lights, burst pipes, toilets that don’t work and ceilings pocked with gaping holes — this is the shocking state of the KwaZulu-Natal education department’s offices in Durban. Such is the state of disrepair that part of the ceiling in the women’s bathroom on the second floor of Truro House collapsed at the weekend. IOL visited the building, which houses the department’s provincial head office and its Umlazi district office, on Monday. During the visit, the damage in the women’s bathroom was still clearly visible, with a large section of the ceiling caved in and a jagged hole exposing the wooden battens, pipes and ducting above. The findings were documented in photographs. Brown water stains had spread across the ceiling around the hole, and a row of tiles was missing from the wall below. A hand basin in one of the male bathrooms at Truro House, covered with a black refuse bag to st
  2. Widow in a legal battle after Eskom death benefit drops from R5m to R4.7m
    Sep 29, 2026 · original
A widow has been left seeking clarity over the calculation of her late husband’s Eskom pension death benefit after the amount initially approved at more than R5 million was subsequently recalculated to about R4.7 million. The Financial Services Tribunal has now set aside a decision by the Pension Funds Adjudicator that had dismissed L Crawford’s complaint over the quantum of the death benefit payable to her following the death of her husband, I Crawford. The late husband was a deferred pensioner of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund . He had been employed by Eskom from July 1988, until his resignation in July 2021. He remained a deferred member of the fund until his death in April 2022. A board resolution allocated 100% of the death benefit to the wife as the sole beneficiary. The fund initially calculated the death benefit at R5 million including investment returns from the time Crawf
  3. ‘What will actually change?’ Ramaphosa’s GBVF plan faces pressure to deliver
    Sep 29, 2026 · original
For South African women, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s latest promises come down to one devastatingly simple question: Will anything actually change? Because while government announces plans, women are still being killed. The question comes as the country reels from the discovery of women’s bodies in Ekurhuleni, intensifying public anger over South Africa’s devastating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) crisis. Eleven women’s bodies have been found in Ekurhuleni since July, according to the Foundation for Rights of Expression and Equality (Free SA). Behind every body is a family mourning a daughter, mother, sister or loved one. Addressing the nation on Tuesday night, Ramaphosa announced a series of measures aimed at accelerating the state’s response to GBVF. Among them is a national case-recovery process targeting unresolved murders, attempted murders, rapes and serious sexual offen

    Sep 29, 2026 · original
South Africans in several parts of the country are in for another spell of disruptive weather on Wednesday, with severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and flooding risks forecast across parts of the interior. At the same time, extremely high fire danger persists in sections of the Western and Northern Cape. The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over Gauteng, central to eastern North West and central to western Limpopo on Wednesday, 30 September. Heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning are expected, with the weather service warning that the storms could lead to localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, as well as damage to settlements and infrastructure. Rainfall forecasts indicate a 60% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms across much of Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalang
  5. PRESIDENT’S SPEECH: Ramaphosa unpacks goverment’s plan to fight gender-based violence and femicide
    Sep 29, 2026 · original
Fellow South Africans, I address you tonight with the heaviest of hearts. I speak as President of the Republic. I also speak as a man, as a husband and as a father to daughters. But no man should look away from the violence to which women in our country are subjected. The violence inflicted upon the women of South Africa is a source of profound pain and national shame. The nation is angry. The women of South Africa are angry. Their anger is justified. I share that anger. I share the grief at lives so cruelly and senselessly cut short. On Sunday, the body of another woman was found in Springs. This brings to 11 the number of women’s bodies found in Ekurhuleni since July. Who are the woman who have been killed Among those whose names we know are Busisiwe Mahlangu. Itumeleng Kekana. Nomfesane Mjobo. Gracious Nkomo. Elizabeth Moselakgomo. Dineo Motapane. Jabulile Ntimba. Ntombifuthi Nxumalo.

Addressing the country, Ramaphosa sympathised with the families of the 12 women who have been killed. These are the four interventions: Multi-disciplinary approach “I have directed the Minister of Police and the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, working with the South African Police Service and, with due regard to prosecutorial independence, the National Prosecuting Authority, to undertake a national case-recovery operation focused on unresolved murders, attempted murders, rapes and serious sexual offences involving women and children,” he said. 10. Activist group wants Iain Wares imprisoned before extradition to Scotland
    Sep 29, 2026 · original
Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) has called for Iain Wares to be imprisoned for sexually abusing a former pupil, arguing that a non-custodial sentence would fail to reflect the lasting trauma experienced by survivors of childhood abuse. The call followed testimony by State social worker Phumzile Sithole at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday. She argued that direct imprisonment was necessary to reflect the seriousness of Wares’ crimes and serve as a deterrent. The hearing formed part of sentencing proceedings following Wares’ conviction for indecently assaulting a former pupil at Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School in 1988. WMACA said Sithole focused on the long-term psychological harm suffered by children subjected to sexual abuse, contrasting her evidence with that presented by the defence’s social worker, Arina Smit. According to the organisation, Sithole told the court
