- Participants required for research project exploring financial information and regenerative transition
Sep 7, 2026 · original
Progressive Farming Trust has commissioned research to understand what financial information farmers want before they take up regen/sustainable farming practices. Grounded Research will hold three online focus group in late Sep / early Oct to understand financial decision making; participants will be paid £100 for attending and contributing to one 2-hour session. The research team are looking for decision making farmers who are considering and/or adopting sustainable farming practices. To ensure a balanced mix of views and farm types are represented, participants are requested to register with Five Bar Gate and then complete a brief profiling survey where you’ll be asked to indicate your availability for the various sessions. Participants will be informed on Mon 21st Sep if they are invited to one of the focus groups. Aug 28, 2026 · original
The Agroecology Learning Collective ( TALC ), which Agricology is part of , is gathering evidence about the current demand for skilled workers on farms, together with details about what a relevant apprenticeship or qualification should include: and we need your input. Could you spare a few moments to fill in their template letter of support (attached), and share your experiences of trying to recruit workers on your farm? TALC stated: We want to show the UK Government that there is a pressing need for skilled workers, who have good practical knowledge and experience of core areas on mixed farms integrating livestock and horticulture. Key skills are currently missing from existing qualifications, and there is an overall lack of emphasis on the hands-on practicalities of working on an agroecological or regenerative system. We are exploring the option of altering the current Level 4 Assistan - ‘Worth the Change’ project secures funding from Aberdeen Group Charitable Trust

A new project exploring how better economic and financial information can help farmers feel more confident about adopting agroecological practices has received funding from Aberdeen Group Charitable Trust through its Ideas grants programme. About the project Worth the Change is a new initiative from the Progressive Farming Trust (PFT) that aims to improve confidence in business decision-making around the transition to more sustainable and resilient farming systems. While there is an abundance of technical information available on regenerative, agroecological and lower-input farming practices, there is far less independent and accessible information about the financial implications of adopting them. Farmers consistently report uncertainty around profitability, cash flow, risk and return on investment as significant barriers to making changes. The project will explore what financial inform - A fresh look at the value of soil health

Measuring and valuing soil health is becoming increasingly important – but it’s not easy to do. Now, one regenerative farming adviser has written a Centenary Scholarship paper for the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers entitled ‘The value of soil health’, setting out the practicalities of this complex area. “Regenerative farming is driving changes, and farmers are now being paid to provide carbon and other ecosystem services,” explains report author Harry Epsom. “But we’re operating within legislation written decades ago – I wanted to create a guide on soil principles and valuing soil health.” At a fundamental level, soil quality and soil health are different. “We have been destroying our soils slowly for years; our high input, high output focus has created these problems,” he says. “But soil can be healed quite quickly, which presents us with an opportunity.” Measuring soil hea - New guide to on-farm agroecological training published
Aug 5, 2026 · original
A new document has been published which explores different models for offering certificated training, accredited training, work placements and apprenticeships on your farm. It has been produced by The Agroecology Learning Collective ( TALC ) in collaboration with OrganicLea and the Landworkers’ Alliance . What is the aim of the guide? As the UK Agroecology movement grows and deepens, so does the question of how we best build, share and recognise skills and learning in this field. The aim of this document is to provide an overview of the currently available options for farmers and growers interested in developing accredited or certificated on-farm training. What does it cover? The guide covers different models for delivery, funding opportunities, case studies and hear from learners who have been part of these programmes. It explores the role that TALC hopes to play in developing strands o - Open Your Gate campaign supports farmers to inspire the next generation

A major study involving 2500 young people offered growing evidence that young people want to know more about where their food comes from but often lack opportunities to engage directly with farming. In response to these findings, AHDB and LEAF have joined forced to launch Open Your Gate – a new campaign that supports farmers to deliver one million on-farm experiences for children and young people by 2031. About the campaign By opening their gates today, farmers can help shape the consumers, decision-makers and agricultural workforce of tomorrow by increasing their understanding of food production, farming and the environment through real on-farm experiences. To inspire and help them overcome obstacles to delivering farm visits as part of the one million ambition, 80 farmers are being given the chance to take part in AHDB and LEAF’s free School Farm Visits Support (SFVS) programme , devel - Getting to know solitary bee anatomy
Jul 30, 2026 · original
In this blog, Jayna Connelly of GWCT explains how understanding solitary bee anatomy helps distinguish them from honeybees, wasps and similar insects, and reveals how they are adapted for pollination and survival. She describes key features such as antennae that detect chemical signals and environmental cues, specialised hairs and leg structures for collecting pollen, and wing patterns used to identify different bee groups. The blog also highlights that solitary bees often carry loose pollen rather than compact pellets, making them particularly effective cross-pollinators. By recognising these anatomical features, scientists and recorders can better identify species, monitor populations and inform conservation efforts for these important pollinators. Jul 22, 2026 · original
Three farmers from across England have been recognised in the 2026 Soil Farmer of the Year competition after demonstrating how better soil management can strengthen farm business resilience, improve profitability and help businesses adapt to increasingly challenging weather conditions. The awards were presented at Groundswell by competition organisers Innovation for Agriculture and Farm Carbon Toolkit, alongside sponsors Cotswold Seeds and Hutchinsons. Farmers attending the ceremony heard directly from the winners about the practical changes they have made to improve soil health and the impact those changes have had on their businesses. Although representing very different farming systems, all three winners demonstrated how investing in soil health can reduce costs, improve resilience and create more profitable businesses over the long term. First place was awarded to Chris Molyneux, a f - Fund available for organic and agroecological farmers

A charitable fund offering support for organic and agroecological farmers is seeking fresh applications, via bespoke interest-free and unsecured loans of up to £25,000. The Dean Organic Fund was formed in 2011 following a bequest by Jennie Bone – a passionate supporter of organic farming. Last year, a range of businesses benefited from the fund, including Seaview Farms – a regenerative farm in Northern Ireland. “They are new entrants tenants managing a large area of priority habitat, who run a regenerative grazing enterprise,” explains Chris Jones, adviser to the Dean Organic Fund. Through their careful grazing management, they aim to create a landscape where wildlife, soil life and productive farming can thrive together. “The Fund enabled the purchase of specialist native cattle at a key moment for their business, and allowed them to move forward without being limited by cash flow,” he - The Farming Roadmap 2050: Growing England’s Future
Jul 14, 2026 · original
On 24 June 2026, the Secretary of State, The Rt Hon Emma Reynolds MP, published The Farming Roadmap 2050: Growing England’s Future , setting out a 25-year plan that ‘gives English farmers certainty beyond the next harvest for the first time.’ With the growing impacts of extreme weather and climate, Farming Roadmap 2050: Growing England’s Future sets out how farmers can adapt through nature-based solutions such as improved soil health and water management. Developed in partnership with farmers, the roadmap sets out how the government will provide long-term stability. Backed by immediate action from the government’s response to Baroness Minette Batters’ independent Farming Profitability Review, farmers will have better access to the tools, technology, skills and supply chains they need to invest, innovate and grow. Collaborative models such as co-operatives will play a much larger role, en - Wakelyns is raising £1 million to secure its future

The latest record temperatures demand urgent action to tackle the climate crisis. The latest Government policy is for 10% of UK farmland to be agroforestry by 2050. But, as reported in The Guardian this week – one of the pioneer agroforestry projects in Europe and long term demonstration site is at risk. Established through first-mover agroforestry planting in 1994, Wakelyns in Suffolk has become a lighthouse site for progressive farming and land use. Wakelyns prioritises environmental protection and enhancement, community and social engagement, scientific research and education. 14 Wakelyns supporters in 2025 established a charity (the Wakelyns Charitable Community Benefit Society) to secure the future of the Wakelyns site through community ownership. If they can raise enough to pay half its value by the end of 2026, the other half will be gifted to the Society and the goal of securing - Organic farming outperforms other assurance schemes, major Defra-backed review finds

Organic farming delivers consistent environmental benefits across key indicators, including biodiversity, soil health and reduced chemical use, according to a new Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)-commissioned review by the Organic Research Centre (ORC). The analysis, based on more than 300 peer-reviewed studies and farm-level data, found that organic systems show the strongest evidence of achieving Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) goals. The study also found that LEAF Marque demonstrates strong ambition but requires more robust evidence to confirm its impact. How the review was carried out ORC Senior Researcher Dr Julia Cooper said the review used four main approaches. The study included an AI-assisted review of more than 300 peer-reviewed papers to extract evidence for impacts of organic farming on selected indicators linked to the EIP goals. She said these
