  2. Bugental’s Five Postulates in a Rhinestone Jumpsuit – Dolly Parton and Humanistic Psychology – A tribute by Dr. Matthew J. Zagumny
    Aug 27, 2026 · original
Dolly Rebecca Parton died on Tuesday August 26, 2026, in Nashville at the age of eighty, after a brief illness she had kept from the public. She was the fourth of twelve children born in a one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, Tennessee and she never once pretended otherwise. She could name all twelve siblings faster than you could write them down and she liked to prove it. There is a reason this tribute belongs at AHP. In August of 1963, J. F. T. Bugental stood up at the first meeting of the American Association for Humanistic Psychology (AHP’s predecessor) and told the room that psychology had spent a hundred years taking human beings apart and had never once managed to put one back together. He offered five postulates for a psychology that might do better. The following spring, a girl from Sevier County Tennessee graduated high school on a Friday, left for Nashville on a bus the next day, a
  3. A Poetic Call For And A Reflection and Commentary On Clarity, Understanding, Hope, Courage, and Compassion
    Aug 3, 2026 · original
After a recent birthday, I felt guided to try to find a published poem I had written as a teenager. It was called “The Heavens Weep.” In June 2026, as I reflected on the state of the world, I also felt guided to offer a re-interpretation of the poetic and metaphoric words in the poem as they seemed very relevant for today’s reality. In essence, the poem is a call for a “reality check” and for Clarity, Understanding, Hope, Courage, and Compassion. So, I will first present the poem as it was written many years ago, and I will then offer a re-interpretation of, a commentary about, each sentence, or refrain, as it relates to today’s reality. THE HEAVENS WEEP The heavens weep white crystals, frozen tears, Which fall on children playing. When each hears And sees amidst the dribble signs of dread, They flee in spurts toward home, confused instead Of frightened. Yet, above, clouds frown, in grie

  5. Humanistic Political Psychology
    Mar 28, 2026 · original
Humanistic Political Psychology by Elliot Benjamin, Ph.D., Ph.D., March 28, 2026 I believe that the essential humanistic psychology values of empathy and authenticity need to persist, but that the adjustment of a significant extension of humanistic psychology to politics needs to be made in order for humanistic psychology to be relevant to current and future generations. In 2022 I published two short articles describing how I believed that the future of humanistic psychology was directly connected to both the future of democracy and the preservation of the human species (Benjamin, 2022a, 2022b). My articles were spurred on by the experience of having lived through 4 years of Donald Trump being President of the United States, and were written from the relatively optimistic perspective of Trump no longer being the U.S. president. Fast forward 2 years later, to the middle of 2024 when Trump
  6. What Is Happening In the World Today and Why: Humanity’s Evolving Consciousness and The Role of Archetypal Energies as Guides During An Unfolding Weeding Out And Alignment Process
    Feb 8, 2026 · original
What is happening in the world today and why? Humanity is evolving its consciousness at individual and collective levels. Given these seemingly tumultuous times, as of this writing (January 2026), to make such a statement may sound like a strange thing to say. However, I suggest that if you are alive today and if you are reading these words, these are the very times for which you were born—to assist Humanity as it evolves its consciousness with your unique gifts, whatever they may be. That is, this period of our individual and collective human being-ness may be characterized as an unfolding period of weeding out and alignment with the essence of Humanity’s evolving consciousness. Many of the horrendous things that we may be witnessing and/or experiencing, for example, in our personal, societal, and/or global life spaces largely represent a misalignment with the essence of Humanity’s evol
  7. Understanding the Soul’s Compass: The Tripartite Model of Meaning in Life
    Jan 28, 2026 · original
For decades, “meaning in life” (MIL) was treated as a vague, poetic concept—something for philosophers to ponder over coffee, but a bit too “mushy” for rigorous psychological science. That changed with the emergence of the Tripartite Model proposed by George and Park (2016). The model proposes three aspects of meaning (being-in-the world) which vary in valence across time but are interrelated. These three are Coherence, Purpose, and Mattering. Whether you are designing a longitudinal study or sitting across from a client in distress, understanding these three dimensions can be a game changer. The Three Pillars of Meaning 1. Coherence (The Cognitive Dimension) Coherence is the “sense-making” component. It is the feeling that one’s life is predictable, orderly, and makes sense. When a person has high coherence, they can weave their past, present, and future into a logical narrative. • For

  10. Excellent Monograph published on Niela Miller’s work
    Dec 17, 2025 · original
M.I.T. Media Labs recently reviewed the work of one of our AHP members, Niela Miller, and created an excellent monograph describing her contributions over the years. Here is the complete document ; a brief excerpt from the monograph is below. “Her work, particularly the development of Symbolic Modeling (SymMod), represents a bridge between the inner landscape of human consciousness and the outer world of tangible creation. Long before embodied cognition and affective computing became institutional research areas, Miller was using bodily practices and performances as laboratories for deep psychological exploration. She later investigated the virtual not as a simulation, but as a legitimate space for authentic human interaction and insight. As academically cited in Mackey and Jacobson’s Metaliteracy in a Connected World, she is a pioneer in using virtual environments to explore the very fa
