  1. Same Mission, Different Ethos
    Sep 3, 2026 · original
When it came for me to decide where to do my Professional Development Grant (PDG), I really struggled to find another non-profit school with a unique focus on music and yoga like my placement, Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya (KSV). When I began asking my Senior Fellow, Gaurang, about recommendations, he pointed me to Ashram Paryavaran Vidyalaya (APV), a school based in the Himalayas of rural Uttarakhand which was a Host Organization for an AIF Fellow in 2013. Prior to visiting APV, I was most curious to see the similarities between KSV and APV, especially since they have such similar ethos’ and mentalities towards student welfare and education. However, despite the alikeness between the two schools, I personally found the most interesting aspects when comparing the two schools to be the differences in how the shared mentalities manifest. APV’s welcome sign The most notable differences in APV a
  2. A Day in the Life: Jamshedpur Edition
    Sep 3, 2026 · original
Before starting the Fellowship, one of my most pressing questions was about what my day-to-day routine would look like. After being accepted, I asked a few alumni what a typical day was like, and they all gave the same answer: “It depends.” As someone who loves planning, I found that answer unsatisfying. I couldn’t explain to family and friends what my new job would involve because, honestly, I didn’t know. Not knowing where I’d live, who my friends would be, or what my routine would become made this even more daunting. A view of my neighborhood. Photo courtesy of the author. Now, as I prepare to leave Jamshedpur after ten months, it’s hard to remember that feeling. I’m leaving with the fulfillment of having completed meaningful work, along with lifelong friendships and memories I’ll carry with me for a long time. This blog is my attempt to capture one version of a “day in the life” of a
  3. What Is the Role of Life Skills Education?
    Sep 2, 2026 · original
Can Life Skills Be Taught? One of the key projects I worked on during my Banyan Impact Fellowship was helping develop Playquity ’s life skills curriculum for adolescent girls. When I first began the work, I thought the challenge would be identifying important life skills and designing engaging activities around them. However, as I started with it, I found myself sitting with a question that felt difficult to answer: Can life skills actually be taught? When I think about the lessons that have shaped me the most, very few of them came from formal teaching or guided activities. Travel taught me perspective. Relationships taught me empathy. Difficult situations taught me resilience. New environments taught me confidence. Exposure to different people and realities taught me humility. Most of the skills I value today emerged through experiences, observations, relationships, and reflection rath
  4. The Prices of Mahua
    Sep 2, 2026 · original
“Joey, I got you a gift. It’s dried mahua flowers, an antioxidant superfood and, most importantly, a natural sweetener.” I looked at the bag my friend in Hyderabad gave me. At Rs.240, it costs roughly 48x times as much as the equivalent weight of sugar. After researching how to use them, I boiled some in tea, took a sip, and did not like the taste. Mahua Flowers (Source: Odisha Dept. of Forestry) A week later, I returned to Koraput District, Odisha, my project fieldsite. I attended training sessions on pre-monsoon dry sowing (PMDS), a soil fertility technique that involves growing 10-15 different cover crops two months before kharif crop sowing. This natural farming technique not only reduces input costs for farmers by replacing costly chemical fertilizers, but it also increases soil health and resiliency. Chemical farming synthetically incorporates nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and ot
  5. Meet Sunita – Livelihoods
    Aug 24, 2026 · original
Sunita’s Story Living in a society where women are rarely encouraged to step outside their homes, Sunita spent her days managing household chores and caring for her children. Like many women around her, she had few chances to imagine a different life. That changed when AIF’s Livelihoods program stepped in with a three-month vocational training and skill development program for women that taught her tailoring, from basic stitches to advanced techniques, along with market order fulfillment, digital financial literacy, bookkeeping, and cataloguing. She began earning wages even before her training ended, marking an early step toward economic empowerment. With AIF’s support, she obtained her own sewing machine and steadily grew her pipeline of work and her skill set. Sunita took up orders worth lakhs of rupees through the AIF Training-cum-Production Center (TPC) but didn’t stop there. She als
  6. Meet Sonia – Livelihoods
    Aug 24, 2026 · original
Sonia’s Story Sonia is the first girl in her family able to access economic empowerment and secure an independent future for herself and her mother. Sonia’s studies and worldview expanded through AIF’s Livelihoods program, which provides skill development for women and helps build a pipeline of women in STEM careers. After completing her vocational training at ITI, she stepped into the job market with hope, only to face several rejections. But she kept going. That persistence, paired with real skill development, finally opened a door. Today, she works as a green electrician at Hero Electric in Gurgaon, far from her small village near Rewari, as one of the few female electricians at the company. Sonia’s journey of economic independence did not stop at employment. With green jobs training and a steady income, she now covers her own expenses, supports her mother, and no longer needs to depe
  7. What Makes a Nonprofit Effective? A Donor’s Guide to Evaluating Impact
    Aug 24, 2026 · original
Why Evaluating Impact Matters Before You Give Donors increasingly want assurance that their money is supporting the causes they care about. That’s why evaluating impact goes beyond emotional appeal. The process of evaluating impact is the preliminary spark of connection between the donor and the nonprofit, helping donors deeply understand the mission, program credibility, nonprofit transparency, and evidence of real-world outcomes. Charity accountability standards cited by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance’s 2025 Charity Standards Revision Project include governance, finances, results reporting, appeal accuracy, and website disclosures, among other factors. 5 Key Considerations for Donors Evaluating Nonprofit Organizations 1. Look out for Mission Clarity and Program Focus An effective nonprofit must be clear about who it serves, the problem it addresses, and how its programs respond to the pr
  8. How Diaspora Philanthropy is Transforming India
    Aug 24, 2026 · original
A Global Community Giving Back The Indian diaspora serves as a bridge between India and the world. Today, many Indian-born people residing in the US consider giving back to India as a core value, as a way to connect with their roots beyond family ties and sending money to relatives. Giving back includes service-oriented philanthropy and efforts in support of development in India. In 2025, Dalberg, Indiaspora, and the India Philanthropy Alliance reported that Indian Americans donated $4-5 billion in 2024, nearly tripling their contributions compared to a baseline report in 2018. This growth indicates that the Indian diaspora is aligning heart with action and becoming a powerhouse of philanthropy. From Remittances to Philanthropy India is one of the world’s largest recipients of remittances. Indians who live abroad often send money home, but philanthropy constitutes a different kind of giv

  10. Meet Zubaida – Livelihoods
    Aug 11, 2026 · original
Zubaida’s Story Zubaida and eleven other women in Khurbadaulla are women entrepreneurs, carrying forward a craft passed down through generations. The Salma Self-Help Group customizes hand-woven rugs and carpets to the exact needs of their customers, taking six days of careful work to produce a 4 × 6 rug. Zubaida herself expands her group’s clients by traveling to markets and haat bazaars across many cities to sell the products her group creates. Their income is not only their own economic empowerment, but also sustenance for their families. With the support of AIF’s skill development and livelihoods program in Bhopal, a sample of their craftsmanship made its way to America. Once their work was listed online, their crafts earned new recognition — and more sales. Zubaida’s excitement extended far beyond the opportunity for skill development, the room to create new designs, and the prospect
