  1. Honoring the passing of Dr. Gladys Taylor McGarey, MD, MD(H), ABIHM – 11/30/1920 – 09/28/2024

Gladys was widely regarded as the “Mother of Holistic Medicine” and cofounded the American Holistic Medical Association (the predecessor of the AIHM) along with Norm Shealy, Bill McGarey and Evarts Loomis. Gladys was a force of nature…. always pursuing new dreams and projects that realized her vision of a united body, mind and soul approach to healing. I was lucky enough to meet Gladys in my 20’s and be inspired to by her example to pursue medical training and holistic medicine. 6. Integrative Medicine Secures a Win!

On January 5, 2022, the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM) announced that is successfully applied for an Integrative Medicine (IM) Taxonomy Code from the National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC) for allopathic and osteopathic integrative physicians. The code will become effective April 1, 2022 and is a game-changer for the field. A taxonomy code is a unique 10-character code that designates health care providers’ classification and specialization. The code is required when applying for a National Provider Identifier and to become a Medicare provider. The code set is established by the NUCC and is structured into three distinct “levels” including Provider Type, Classification, and Area of Specialization. It is important that providers select the correct code because many insurers require the use of taxonomy codes to issue billing credentials, process health insurance claims, an

Five AIHM staff members were at ICIMH 2022 in Phoenix in late May. It was wonderful being together in person again. It was rejuvenating to catch up with one another as well as our colleagues from other organizations and universities. There were more than a dozen AIHM Fellows, Fellowship graduates, and Faculty in attendance. It was heart-warming to reconnect in small groups on different nights. Some of us got to grab ramen and sing karaoke together! We were proud to see one of our Fellows and one of our graduates presenting in Phoenix: Integrative Perspectives on the Use of Yoga for Healthcare Burnout by Catherine Justice, PT, DPT, C-IAYT, and a George Fellow and Inpatient Complementary and Integrative Health Care with Karen Villanueva, RN, BSN, MSOM, LA, a graduate and a Social Impact Clinical Scholar The community you join while a Fellow is one with like-minded people who stay connected
