  1. What we’ve been building at Budo Accelerator
    Sep 10, 2026 · original
Greetings from Aikido Journal. I hope you’ve been finding something worthwhile in the articles we’ve been bringing back out of the archive. There’s a great deal in there, including interviews, technical writing, and history that had been inaccessible for years. We’re steadily working our way through the remaining articles. More will be on the way soon. As most of you know, in addition to serving as Executive Editor of Aikido Journal, I’m also the co-founder and CEO of Budo Accelerator, a nonprofit with a very clear focus: to help young martial artists carry what they build in the dojo into the rest of their lives. We’ve been running programs in Southern California, and are about to go national. I wanted to share an update with the aikido community on what we’ve been up to and what’s ahead. I’ve practiced aikido for 35 years. Over the course of those years, I’ve trained with many young ma
  2. “Aikido and the universal spirals,” by
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
In recent times, several scientists, both physicists and mathematicians, are realizing the importance and the deep connection of spiral forms in our universe. Finding empirically such a geometry in the world around us is rather natural: in nature, spirals are very common. Draining water in bathtubs, tornados, whirlpools are all clear examples of the spiral form that arises from these phenomena. But there are spirals almost everywhere, even where we wouldn’t expect to find them. If we take the image of a match just lit, we can spot in the early moments the natural geometric behaviour of smoke around it and we can see that it assumes clearly a spiral shape! But that’s not all! Galaxies are spiral-shaped too, which suggests that we find this occurrence both in the infinitely big as the infinitely small. There are spirals formed by the pistils in the crown of a sunflower, as well as in shell
  3. Nev’s reply
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
Nev’s reply This began as a simple thank you for Alister Gillies’s, “Change As Part of the Cycle of Movement in Aikido,” article. But then what his words inspired began to travel. I did a word count. As it turned out I could not convey what I wanted to say briefly. Again. Apologies. I could say it in 15 words or less but then it would be saying something else. Well, here goes.. The Founder, Morihei Ueshiba did not consider Aikido as a separate “other” art at odds with or in competition with anything else, rather all embracing and inclusive. Aikido is not another opinion to contend over, rather one of several valid methods of discovery. The Do resides in the journey of personal discovery, not opinions, not mine, not your, not his or hers or theirs or in “other” ways to perform a technique. The “best” Aikido is the one that works best for you in your uniqueness. Simply training and discove
  4. “Fū-Rin-Ka-Zan and the Evolution of the Peaceful Warrior,” by Christopher Huxley
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
The Warring States period (sengoku jidai) of Japanese history was a time of immense social upheaval and frequent military conflict. It lasted from just after the middle of the 15th century until the beginning of the 17th century (1467 to 1600). During this period the Samurai perfected many aspects of bujitsu ranging from armed and unarmed combat on a personal level to strategies involving armies of tens of thousands of men. It was also a period in which warriors came to understand the psychology involved in success and the futility in only aspiring to win in competition as a philosophy of how to live. It is from this period of creativity and conflict that the seeds of Aikido were created. It was the successful daimyo Takeda Shingen who adopted the phrase Fū-Rin-Ka-Zan (風林火山) as his war slogan. The phrase is fully rendered as follows: Kaya ki koto kaze no gotoku. Shizu kanaru koto hayashi
  5. Deceitful Uke, Deceitful Nage
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
About 25 years ago I observed an otherwise legitimate meditation group descend into becoming a cheap and nasty, toxic cult. This happened because the person who had founded the group, because of her exemplary qualities, was placed onto an imaginary pedestal by people who assigned her a mythical status in their minds. Whilst the founder of the group was barely aware and discouraged such aberration, she appeared subtly influenced by the limelight that was offered. Not long after the founder’s death, even greater fools buying into this myth, began a “takeover bid.” Of what, who can tell? Meanwhile all meditation had gone through the floor. Politics had replaced it. A sneaky subtle politics pretending to be mediation oriented but in fact ulterior motives had toxified the group. It was not entirely obvious at first. As time passed, opposing cliques developed; then gossip, innuendo and a subtl
  6. Why We Fail To Develop Aikido
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
“Train and forget..” Morihei Ueshiba “Train and forget..” Morihei Ueshiba Why did he say this? The learning does not take place during training!! But modern Westerners, smitten with the pathology of instant gratification, like to imagine they can short cut the processes of nature with hubris and intellect. So we go home imagining “we have learnt a technique.” Or otherwise beating themselves up for having “forgotten.” You’ve “learned” NOTHING! You have “forgotten” nothing. THE BODY FORGETS NOTHING!! Every atom, jot and tittle of experience is measured, lined up for evaluation and duly processed by forces outside your ken or control. This is so. Take it or leave it and it will not change one atom of fact, except that your own self doubt will harm you. That’s all. Training is not for “learning,” standing around pontificating, discussing, analysing or in any was avoiding ACTUALLY DOING THE W
  7. O’Sensei’s Tantric Practices
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
“Aikido is the practice of mastering ACTIVE MEDITATION with the primary of life, BREATH as its basis. On this basis is a tantric art. – Put simply, Tantra is Meditation in Action. Reclaiming our original, natural state!” To the untaught, mention the word, ” tantra” and they fearfully start imagining frightful orgies involving that dreaded three letter word, “sex.” The real perversion is the national obsession of, “Let’s pretend it doesn’t exist and that nobody will notice my condition.” Usually these individuals forget that they are here because of it because they have a difficulty time imagining that their parents actually did it. (Sorry, there is no other way to procreate. The cabbage patch and the stork are myths.) These same individuals can blissfully watch war movies where killing and mindless destruction seems an ordinary part of life. When a human being becomes emotionally stunted
  8. Daito-ryu’s Ippondori… “Where does Aikido’s Ikkyo come from?”
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
We have repeatedly made the claim that the majority of aikido techniques have their origins in the Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu curriculum. There is perhaps no better example than aikido’s most practiced basic form, ikkyo. The precursor of ikkyo is Daito-ryu’s ippondori. Ikkyo was altered in some important ways, mostly by the Aikikai in the postwar era. Morihei Ueshiba’s execution of ikkyo in Iwama after the war more closely resembled the Daito-ryu ippondori than what was being practiced in Tokyo. Morihei retained important Daito-ryu principles such as initiating the movement on uke’s in-breath, and off-balancing and controling uke by means of atemi and the application of pressure points. In other words, the Founder preserved the martial spirit of the technique inherited from Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. The Tokyo Aikikai made dramatic changes that eliminated the martial emphasis of the original tech
  9. Sunk Cost – The Diminishing Returns of Non-Adaptivity
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
“Each moment is made new!” Morihei Ueshiba “The definition of madness is to repeat the same errors hoping for a different outcome.” The technique continued to fail but he kept trying to justify it instead of making adjustments. Waffling about how, “This is what I was taught…” and the superiority of his new school, he insisted we keep on doing it even though it kept not working. His increasing frustration became evident in his frown, tension and pent up rage. Was he really taught this garbage? Or did he misunderstand? How do you think he will fare in real survival situation? The old teacher tried to offer some corrections that did work but clinging to his ego the younger man refused. He felt he was being shown up and his blood boiled. “How dare the old fool beat me with something that doesn’t work?” “How dare he extricate from my technique with such ease?” “How dare he mysteriously make t
  10. What is the meaning of Katsujinken
    Jul 5, 2026 · original
From: http://www.katsujinken.nl/en/2013/06/10/wat-betekent-katsujinken/ What is the meaning of Katsujinken Written by Katsujinken June 10th, 2013 Literally the term means “the life-giving sword” or “the animating sword”. However, it does not so much refer to the physical sword as to swordsmanship. The concept is the opposite of setsunin-tõ: “the killing [life-taking] sword [swordsmanship]”. Around 1600 these concepts received a second (spiritual and philosophical) meaning in the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu, which was strongly influenced by Zen Buddhism. Katsujin-ken now also referred to the sword that animates the sword fighter. Setsunin-tõ, the killing sword, is of a lower order than the sword that keeps alive, or gives life to, the adversary – not just from a strategic point of view (see below), but also from a Buddhist perspective.
