A Reader writes: Hi Ed, I purchased the Sharp Plasmacluster FPN40CX air purifier, which is (one of) the same unit as you have I believe (but mine is Canadian). I read your email pages, but could not find an answer to my question which is; -how can I find HEPA filter material to use to replace the HEPA filter in my girlfriends FPN40CX? I read your post on changing/replacing the carbon pellets, and will do that when the time comes. However, the HEPA filter is getting quite black. I know it may still be good, and it probably is due to the fact that it’s only 1 year old, however the environment includes heavy smokers and cats. That’s pretty much why I bought it, so I could breath better at her place. I figure even if the filter is finished, better the black stuff in the filter, and not in my lungs… I still see some replacement filters online, but at 80-160 bucks, it seems steep (or at the lo - Re: Hamilton Beach 04383 Allergen Reducing Air Cleaner

A Reader writes: Ed, do you have any information on the Hamilton Beach 04383 Allergen Reducing Air Cleaner ? The sales info says that filters can be cleaned and never need replacing. I am also wondering about the performance as compared to the older HB (Hamilton Beach 04163) on your site. Thank you, A Reader. Ed’s Reply Hey Reader; The inexpensive Hamilton Beach 04383 Allergen Reducing Air Cleaner, from small appliance maker Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex, Inc, is very properly named. It is a desktop dust collector , which “reduces” allergens. “Air cleaner” is used on my site to denote sub-HEPA low quality, so the marketers nailed it. At least the company didn’t directly mislead buyers by claiming the product is something it isn’t. This air cleaner is targeted exclusively at very naive first-time buyers. If you read my home page, about halfway down you’ll see a section under the headline “ - Re: Air Purifiers for Preventing Flu and Chronic Illness?

A Reader writes: Hi Ed, I’m so glad I found your site. Great work. I work in schools, so I’m always around kids, and I get sick a lot, presumably from their germs. I have some mild allergies as well, which I’m sure compromises my immune system. Finally, in one of my offices there is a musty smell coming from one of the walls, which makes me think there’s some unpleasantness inside it. (Actually I just moved into that office, so mold hasn’t caused my illnesses to date, but I don’t think it will help.) Is there an air cleaner/purifier that will help prevent colds/flu under these circumstances? I understand that touch is the primary culprit, but I try to keep my hands away from the children. Maybe controlling the other factors (allergies/mold) would help somewhat? I’m just so sick of getting sick. My colleague in the office next to me is sick right now, and I tend to follow behind him. A Reader writes: Howdy Ed! What would you recommend for travel? I have been looking over your site, and maybe I have missed it, but what do you recommend for staying in hotel rooms? I would like something that can be in my checked luggage on a flight so small and lightweight are important. On your recommendation I now have 3 IQAirs and don’t mind paying more if it really is worth it. I don’t have MCS but would like something that cleans the air as much as possible for a small size. Thanks in advance. A Traveler. Ed’s Reply Hey Traveler; You have posed just about the toughest question I get, because hotel and motel air quality has more in common with industrial air than residential. Adding the requirement that the purifier must fit in checked airline luggage narrows the prospects considerably. Most airlines impose limits on size, with the bag’s three-dimensions totaling under 50 inches, w - Re: Best Air Purifier for Dog Hair

A reader writes: Hi, Ed. Am very grateful for your web reviews of air purifiers. Could use some help narrowing the choices down by getting your opinion regarding my multiple pet situation. Due to doggies constant hair shedding, home requires vacuuming every day, or every other day! No carpet, well-insulated, renovated older home in poor air quality city, mild allergy sufferer owners. Rooms 225-300 sf range (Home 2,000 sf). I actually enjoy “white noise” when I sleep, so “noisy” units not as much of a concern, but I have REAL concerns about filter replacement with tons of pet fur floating about. Thanks for any info you care to share. A reader. Ed’s Reply hey Reader; My son has a beautiful Siberian Husky, snow white with blue eyes, he is the ultimate “good boy,” a very lovable canine pet. But he sheds sooooo much doggy hair. We dog-sit when our son goes on his frequent adventure trips. Ple - Auto Cabin Air Filter
Feb 8, 2025 · original
Did you know know that many cars have cabin air filters built into the air conditioning system? Automotive aftermarket industry surveys have demonstrated that a majority of vehicle owners are unaware of this feature and whether their car can filter cabin air. Even fewer can find the cabin filter after they are sure their vehicle has one. These filters have been added to vehicles in the last 20 years without much fanfare. Marketed on European vehicles since the mid 1980’s, cabin air filters began to appear on stateside cars and trucks around 1995. High projected U.S. growth failed to materialize, but now the cabin air filter is common on American and Asian automobiles. Cabin filters, as with air filters generally, do not have standardized terminology. They may be called: pollen filters, dust filters, car air conditioning filters, ACC filters, breather filters, micro filters, micron air fi - What Lives in Your Carpet?

“I have reached the conclusion that carpet and fabrics not cleaned and properly maintained have the potential to cause a variety of health problems inside the building environment.” Dr. Michael Berry, formerly with USEPA. An American Icon For almost 60 years, carpets were America’s favorite floor covering. I remember the 1950’s, when many homes still had wood floors. “Wall-to-wall” carpet was a status symbol, a sure sign that somebody had finally made the big time. Today nearly everyone can afford carpeting. Wood floors are an upsold option in new homes. Carpet is everywhere. Our children learn to crawl, and then walk, on carpeted floors, which seem safer for “rug rats.” Our pets play and roll on the rug, seeming to prefer it over hard floors. Carpets are best cleaned with upright vacuums, which cost less, so as carpets popularity rose, uprights became the American vacuuming standard. In - Whole House Purifiers vs. Portable

The perfect theme song for the whole house air purifier controversy is Tobacco Road , written by John Dee Loudermilk in 1960, and covered by numerous artists: “ I was born in a dump,Mama died and daddy got drunkLeft me here to die or grow,In the middle of Tobacco Road” A central “whole house” air purifying system, added to existing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, is NOT the cost effective solution for household air quality. Unless you are wealthy and/or building a new, carefully custom designed home, this cash is best spent on other aspects of the indoor air situation. I do not claim a whole home air filtration system, beyond a simple furnace filter upgrade, is not a good idea for those with extra cash. Note that everyone, including apartment dwellers, should install a furnace filter upgrade. A MERV-7 filter or better is highly recommended. Ordinary fiberglas
