  1. Living The Dream – A Visit To HobbyTown Westminster
    Jan 26, 2021 · original
It all began in 1986 with the Tamiya Hornet. My dad and I spent the entire weekend building the car and painting the body. A friend of mine had just built the Grasshopper and I was so excited to see how fast my car would go with its larger 540 motor. My friends and I had countless hours of fun racing those cars all over the neighborhood, making jumps and planning all our upgrades. In 1988 a HobbyTown store opened about 2 miles from where I lived in Ft. Collins, Colorado. I remember being so excited to have a hobby store within a short bike ride from my house! Instead of spending the money my mom gave me for school lunch each day, I would save it and buy ball bearings for my Hornet on my way home from school. Later that year, HobbyTown began holding races in the parking lot and I won their first race! A few years later, my first job was calling RC races at a local track that opened nearby
  2. It’s A-Me, MARIO! Get Behind The Controls Of Your Favorite Racing Plumbers
    Jan 26, 2021 · original
Like you, we often walk by the “toy-grade” RC aisle without much thought. Nothing can beat the quality of hobby-grade RC has to offer after all. But on a recent run to the local hobby shop, we came across these Mario Kart Mini Anti-Gravity RC Racers and found them completely irresistible. Available in both Mario and Luigi styles, these racing karts are modeled after the seriously addicting Nintendo Mario Kart series of videogames. If you’re familiar with the game, you’ll know that the racing in the game is combative and highly competitive. Like in the game, the karts can spin, pop-wheelies and drift and they even have an “Anti-Gravity Mode”. Flip the wheels on their sides and the RC karts can do gravity-defying tricks at the touch of a button. All the Mario and Luigi’s karts need now are the ability to deploy banana peels and to shoot out Koopa turtle shells to foil their opponents with.
  3. Restoring a Classic: A Canadian Staggerwing Gets a New Life
    Jan 26, 2021 · original
The classic Beechcraft D17S Staggerwing first appeared in 1937 and was a follow-on design for Walter Beech of the original fixed gear Model 17 of the early 1930s. It was considered to be one of the finest and fastest aircraft of the time. It was expensive, with prices quoted between $14,000 and $17,000 U.S. depending upon the engine selected. A complex aircraft with retracting gear and a comfortable cabin large enough for five adults and some baggage, it had a top speed near 200 mph, which appealed to the wealthy business man in need of fast, efficient transportation. Pictured above: The Staggerwing is right at home among the beauty of British Columbia’s Coastal Mountains. (Photo by Mike Luedey) This Canadian registered Staggerwing, CF-BJD, was manufactured by Beech in the spring of 1938 for the Imperial Oil Company in Quebec. Imperial ordered the seaplane version as indicated by the mod
  4. Origins of The “Boxing Bulldog”
    Jan 26, 2021 · original
The exact origin of Aleksander Gabszewicz’s “Boxing Bulldog” motif is something of a mystery and seems to pre-date its wider use by other Allied units. Photographs taken at RAF Northolt in April 1942, when Gabszewicz was the Commanding Officer of No. 316 (Polish) Squadron, show the “Boxing Bulldog” emblem painted onto the right stole of his Mae West life jacket. Clearly, he had already adopted it as his own by early 1942 and is said to have been using it from 1941. A color pencil drawing of the “Boxing Bulldog” in his personal album is dated 1942 and shows the creature wearing the colors of the Polish flag on its shorts, vest and cape, with the Polish coat of arms on its vest, but without the lightning flashes on the boxing gloves. The first of Gabszewicz’s aircraft to wear the emblem was his Spitfire Mk IX EN526, which had a relatively small “Boxing Bulldog” painted on the port side of
  5. The Man Behind the Camera – David Hart’s plane photography
    Jan 26, 2021 · original
For several years, Model Airplane News has covered a plethora of RC events, and many have something in common: the amazing photography of our longtime contributor David Hart. Articles like this issue’s Top Gun coverage would not be possible without David’s camera skills. We asked David about his incredible photography techniques, and here’s what he had to say. Model Airplane News: What’s your favorite camera and lens combo for taking flight shots at events? David Hart: I’ve always been a Nikon shooter, and my favorite combo is the Nikon D500 with a Nikon 200-500mm lens. Model Airplane News: Do you use filters? David Hart: No, I do not use filters, all photos are edited using Adobe Lightroom. Model Airplane News: How did you get started with photography? David Hart: I had an interest in photography at a young age. But I didn’t get serious about it until early 2010 when I bought my first D
  6. Building Bench & Workshop Tips
    Jan 26, 2021 · original
I have built countless RC models, from kits, plans and even my own scratch designs. For the most part, building an RC model is a lot easier than most beginners might think. If you have assembled a few ARFs in the past however, you’ll have the basic knowledge of how things go together so by choosing a simpler design to start with, you’ll do just fine. Just don’t start with a B-17 bomber of a P-51 Mustang! The Basics Here are some of the basics to keep in mind while setting up your workbench. Keep it straight. In my workshop I use two interior grade hollow-core doors from the home-improvement store, and made the legs and edge bracing using 2x4s and 1×4 boards all screwed together. Placed end to end, I have one long 16 x 3 1/2 foot wide work surface. A good working height for most benches is usually between 32 and 36 inches. But you can make your workbench as long and as high as you like, j
  7. When Drones Go Bad – Investigating incidents of rogue operations
    Jan 26, 2021 · original
It isn’t all aerial imaging and crop surveys; sometimes, people use drones to do bad things. Through a partnership with DroneSec—a private drone security intelligence firm with offices in Australia and Singapore—RotorDrone Pro is able to offer these briefings regarding the nefarious use of small UAS worldwide. This incident occurred less than 50 miles northeast of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, along the disputed border the country shares with India in Kashmir. 8. Night Flight Pop Quiz – Put your knowledge to the test!
    Jan 26, 2021 · original
Editor’s note: inspired by Patrick Sherman’s “Night Flight” feature in our October/November issue, Andrew offered his personal test questions that he created for his own FAA Daylight Operations Waiver. Answers are upside-down at the end! ONE: What are some of the factors that increase the risk of UAS night operations compared to daylight operations? 1. UAS fly differently at night, making it difficult for pilots who are used to flying during the day. 2. A pilot’s visual acuity is reduced, and vision is his/her most important sense. 3. Visibility of the UAS, structures, and ground obstacles, as well as other aircraft, is reduced at night. 4. Pilots and crew members are more likely to be tired and less aware at night. 5. Visual illusions occur at night that can trick any pilot, despite excellent vision, unless the pilot is aware of the visual illusions and can counteract them. A. 1, 2, 4,
  9. Q&A with Matt Brase the Man behind MR Custom Painting
    Jan 19, 2021 · original
If you’re an avid reader of RCCA, you’ll probably notice that some of the bodies of the custom RC builds featured in our pages have been professional painted by none other than Matt Brase of MR Custom Painting. Taking not only painting, but intricate masking to new heights, the father and son team over at MR Custom Painting pride themselves on not only their pristine paint jobs but the art of not using decals to fill in details with. It’s all hand masked and painted. Join us as we catch up with Matt to find out more about his art. RCCA: How did you get into painting RC bodies? MB: At the age of 12 I purchased my first hobby grade RC, a Traxxas Rustler. Shortly after, my father helped me paint a custom body for it. That’s all it took and I was hooked! My RC collection grew and so did the pile of painted bodies. Initially, I masked the bodies and my father sprayed them. The local hobby sho
  10. Starting a Drone Service Business – Ten fundamental steps to success
    Jan 19, 2021 · original
There are few events in your professional life more rewarding than starting your own business. The ability to take an idea and grow it into a thriving entity is a dream many people share. Unlike some business endeavors that require large amounts of capital or extensive training, drones offer a chance for anyone to become their own boss. I have been fortunate enough to start several businesses. Some were great successes, while others burned up in a blaze of glory. Each was a priceless learning experience that led me to my career in the UAV industry. In 2017, I started my drone service business, Vigilante Drones, and in 2018 I started a nonprofit, Vigilante Cares, that uses drones to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Over the years, people have asked me how they can start their own drone service companies. After the last such conversation, I wrote out the ten steps
