- No more sitting idle as Welsh engine fines rise
Sep 30, 2026 · original
Drivers who leave their engines running while parked in Wales could face fines of up to £150 from oday (30th Ocober). The minimum penalty for unnecessary idling will rise from £20 to £75, with councils able to set fines of up to £150, from 30 September. Rule 123 of the Highway Code says drivers must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with its engine running, or leave it running unnecessarily while stationary on a public road. Despite the rule, many drivers are still not aware that idling is an offence. Vehicle emissions can also add to air pollution, which is linked to conditions including heart and lung disease. Children, older people and those with existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable, especially around places such as schools and healthcare settings. Pupils at Marshfield Primary School have been learning about the issue through an anti-idling project funded by the - Mitochondria offer new clue to how air pollution harms the heart
Sep 30, 2026 · original
Scientists investigating how air pollution damages the heart and blood vessels have identified changes in the blood that could help explain the connection. Researchers at UCLA Health found higher levels of two groups of molecules in the blood of both mice and people exposed to air pollution. The findings suggest that damage to mitochondria, the tiny, energy-producing structures within cells, could be one of the early steps linking polluted air to cardiovascular disease. Previous research has shown that exposure to air pollution increases the risk of heart and circulatory problems, but scientists have had a less clear understanding of exactly how pollution causes this damage. The new study points to mitochondria as a possible part of the process. Mitochondria help cells turn fats and other nutrients into energy. When they become damaged, cells may struggle to break down fats properly. Thi - Toxic metals detected in Maui residents months after wildfires
Sep 29, 2026 · original
People living on Maui had elevated levels of several metals in their bodies months after devastating wildfires swept through communities on the Hawaiian island, with higher exposure also linked to abnormal lung function, new research has found. The study, led by researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, analysed urine samples from around 1,400 adults between six and 18 months after the August 2023 fires. Researchers tested for 24 metals and carried out standard breathing tests during the same visits. It was found that participants had substantially higher concentrations of several metals. Antimony levels were almost 40 times higher than US reference values, while manganese was 3.8 times higher, barium 2.3 times higher and arsenic 2.2 times higher. Higher combined exposure to metals was associated with several measures of abnormal lung function. Arsenic, cadmium, copper and antim - Lawyers seek appeal over dieselgate emissions ruling
Sep 28, 2026 · original
Lawyers representing around 1.6 million motorists involved in the Dieselgate litigation are to ask the High Court for permission to appeal a judgment on whether carmakers used devices to manipulate vehicle emissions tests. The appeal application will be heard at the High Court on 7th and 8th October 2026, following a judgment handed down in July after a 13-week trial. Lady Justice Cockerill found that three of 20 vehicles selected as representative examples had breached emissions regulations. The vehicles – one Mercedes and two Peugeot/Citroen models – were found to contain so-called Prohibited Defeat Devices (PDDs). Such devices are designed to alter a vehicle’s emissions performance when it detects testing conditions, potentially allowing it to produce lower emissions during an official test than during ordinary road use. However, the court found that the other 17 vehicles examined did - Recreational marathon runners more affected by air pollution
Sep 28, 2026 · original
Higher levels of air pollution on marathon race days are associated with slower finishing times, with recreational runners appearing to be affected more than elite athletes, new research suggests. We recently reported on a study that took place during this year’s London Marathon and now, researchers at the University of Leicester have gone global, analysing more than 2.7 million marathon performances from six of the world’s major races between 2010 and 2024. The study examined 2,756,553 finishing times from the Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York City and Tokyo marathons, alongside levels of air pollution recorded on race days. The researchers found that for every increase of 1 μg/m³ of NO2, finishing times were around 1.43 minutes slower for men and 1.56 minutes slower for women. The effect was substantially larger among recreational runners, with the researchers estimating that t - Could weather patterns predict India’s worst air pollution months?
Sep 25, 2026 · original
New research has found that large-scale weather patterns explain much of the year-to-year variation in northern India’s winter air pollution and may make seasonal forecasts of severe air pollution possible. Northern India experiences some of the world’s worst winter air pollution, with emergency control measures often introduced as mitigation. In major cities like Delhi, the Air Quality Index has reached levels above 999. more that 30 times the World Health Organization’s safety limit. A new study finds that much of the year-to-year variation in winter pollution can be traced to large-scale weather systems and that these relationships could provide a warning of an unusually polluted winter, months in advance. The study finds that 70% of the year-to-year variation in winter air pollution across northern India can be explained by the frequency of storm systems – known as western disturbanc - Full National Air Quality Conference speaker line-up confirmed

The full speaker line-up for our 2026 has been confirmed and can be viewed below. We will be releasing full information on the discussion panel next week The conference is once again being held at Prospero House in London, taking place on 11th November. This will be our 7th edition of the event and, as ever, we will be bringing together some of the most important policymakers & leading academics who are working on solutions to the challenges created by air pollution and clean air provision. Sep 24, 2026 · original
Almost seven million UK households want to install plug-in solar panels as rules governing the technology are relaxed, according to new research from comparison and switching service Uswitch. The research suggests 26% of households are interested in plug-in solar, which can now be connected to a standard wall socket to generate electricity in spaces such as balconies and gardens. The rule change is making DIY plug-in solar systems more widely available, with retailers such as Argos currently offering a range of panels beginning at £599. Research commissioned by Uswitch found that 18% of people are currently held back from installing solar because they would need permission from their landlord. The research took place in early May 2026, among 2,000 UK energy bill-payers, weighted to be nationally representative. Interest was found to vary widely by age. Almost one in three Gen Z adults (3 - Cleaner New York air linked to better cognitive development in children
Sep 23, 2026 · original
Cleaner air in New York City has been linked to improved cognitive development in young children, according to a study that tracked pollution exposure and developmental scores over more than two decades. Researchers at Columbia University studied successive groups of mothers and children living in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx between 1998 and 2020. They found that as exposure to several major air pollutants fell, children’s scores on tests of mental development rose. The study, published in Environmental Health, looked at exposure during pregnancy to PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Children’s cognitive development was assessed at ages one, two and three using a standardised test known as the Mental Development Index. Pollution levels fell substantially over the period studied. Between 1998 and 2016, average prenatal exposure to PM2.5 dropped
