Like many people in audio, I’d always thought of it as the birth of stereo. Reading it properly, I found myself seeing something rather different. What struck me wasn’t simply the technology. It was the way Blumlein approached the problem—starting with human perception and then working backwards to an engineering solution. It made me wonder whether today’s challenge in spatial audio isn’t creating better content at all, but finding practical ways for more people to experience the remarkable content we already have. It was his first exposure to the format. After a minute or so, I noticed tears in his eyes. When the song had finished, he said, ‘it’s like listening to every monitor mix I ever did of this song’. I knew exactly what he meant. Atmos had somehow restored the little things that get sacrificed along the way when you’re making a stereo record. The tiny details. The decisions nobody notices because they’re buried beneath more important decisions. It’s a bit like cleaning out a drawer and discovering things you didn’t know you’d lost. Atmos is full of moments like that. It doesn’t change the music so much as liberate it. I’m reasonably certain that every Atmos mix engine

We recently presented Airsound Spatial at a special event at The Distillery II in Bristol — a day that marked an exciting milestone for spatial audio in live environments. The Distillery’s new live room has been built around Airsound Spatial technology, making it the first installation of its kind. The system is capable of reproducing any spatial audio format , using a PA configured in a completely new way.
