  1. Mission: Find Our Lifesavers
    Apr 30, 2021 · original
(not the candy or the floating thing. The people who rescued me and my sister) As some of you may know, I’m a big fan of thanking. Perhaps even overthanking (it was the topic of my last book). Well, I’m working on a new Gratitude Project that I’m really excited about, and it’s one that I hope you might want to be involved with. Namely: I’m on a quest to find and thank the five men who saved the lives of me and my sister. And I think I’m getting close, thanks to a team of helpful readers. Here’s the story: Way back in 1988, my sister and I were in high school, and on a big family trip to Alaska. We had rented a kayak in the afternoon, just the two of us. We were paddling around one of America’s largest national parks (3.3 million acres). We saw no other humans – just wilderness and the occasional seal poking up its nose through the water. After awhile we turned our kayak around to go back

    Aug 14, 2014 · original
Forget the president’s Tea Party cousin or Washington animosity. My research shows that we’re all part of one big family. A dysfunctional one, but still – come on, cousins! 3. Introducing Twice Removed – The Podcast that Sets Out to Prove We’re One Big Family
    Dec 6, 2016 · original
Take a look around and find the person closest to you. Maybe that woman in the scarf in line ordering a latte. Or the little boy on a scooter, waiting to cross the street. What if we told you, that you and that person are related. And what if I told you, we can prove it? In Twice Removed, Gimlet’s new limited series, New York Times best-selling author A.J. Jacobs ( The Year of Living Biblically, Drop Dead Healthy ) is on a mission to show that all of us are related in some way. That we’re one big family. In each episode of Twice Removed, A.J. and team dive deep into a guest’s family tree. They build a roadmap down through that tree to the most interesting people and stories. At the end of that roadmap is a mystery relative. A.J. and team will surprise the guest with an in-studio reveal of this surprising mystery connection… someone the guest couldn’t possibly have thought they were relat

  6. Are You My Cousin?
    Aug 28, 2014 · original
My family tree sprawls far and wide. It’s not even a tree, really. More like an Amazonian forest. At last count, it was up to nearly 75 million family members. In fact, there’s a good chance you’re on some far-flung branch of my tree, and if you aren’t, you probably will be soon. It’s not really my tree. It’s our tree The post Are You My Cousin? appeared first on A.J. Jacobs - Official Website .

  8. My Outsourced Life
    Oct 25, 2013 · original
I REALLY SHOULDN’T HAVE to write this article myself. I mean, why am I the one stuck in front of a computer terminal? All this tedious pecking out of words on my laptop. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions . Jesus. What a pain in my ass. Can’t someone else do it? Can’t I delegate this to one of my new assistants and spend my day kicking back on a chaise lounge, Sam Adams in hand, admiring Mischa Barton’s navel on my TV? What about having Asha write it? Or Sunder, Vivek, or Mr. Naveen? Or best of all, my sweet, sweet Honey? Pretty much anyone on my overseas staff will do. Or maybe not. Maybe that’s one of the lessons of these jarring and curiously enlightening four weeks. Dammit. I guess I’ll have to write about the lessons , too. Okay, on with it. Here you go. As my team might say, thanking you in advance for reading this story. It began a month ago. I was midway through “The World Is
