  1. Next?
    Sep 30, 2026 · original
I didn’t get a good night’s sleep last night, and I felt stiff-jointed and a little achey when I woke up, so I pretended that the rain that was just tapering off was in fact continuing full strength, and I stayed home from my usual morning run. That gave me immediate access to coffee (very good plan) and fruit (also good, we have a tonne of fruit marching toward spoiling). Showered, went to Morning Prayer, prepared for and led Holy Communion at St Helen’s, then Staff Meeting. After that, I caught up on email, part of which involved a carefully composed letter to the bishop about my retirement. Oh, and a nap.
  2. Broadband, Insurance, Utilities…
    Sep 29, 2026 · original
Slow start to the morning, taking a jog-walk in the dense humidity for my miles. Then I made coffee and ate some fruit, showered, led Morning Prayer, and came home to work with Margaret on some planning for the new house. When we established some starting points, I worked out an arrangement for starting broadband at Base Camp Headington with our current provider ( Zen , with whom I’ve been very pleased). Headington will have fiber-to-the-door, which excites me for technical reasons. Next, I contacted a recommended insurer, to make sure that some arsonist doesn’t lay waste our lovely new home before we have a chance to insure it. That took the rest of the morning and early afternoon. I still have to start an account for our gas and electric, but they gave a four-day window, and they still have two days before I… whoops, the email has just arrived. I need to prepare a homily for tomorrow m
  3. Jonathan Wilson, 1951–2026
    Sep 28, 2026 · original
( Obituary at Dignity Memorial ) ( Obituary at Regent College ) I first met Jonathan Wilson when Margaret and Nate and Si and I moved from New Haven to Durham (NC), where I’d begin my doctoral studies at Duke. A more advance New Testament PG, Steve Pogoloff , had gotten word that we were having trouble in our long-distance, pre-internet efforts to find a place to live (it gradually became clear that no place we could afford would allow us to keep Pearl the Wonder Dog); when we arrived at Holly Hill , Jonathan and Marti and Leah were among the first to greet us and invite us over (along with Byron McCane and his family). I quickly got better acquainted with Jonathan through hanging out in the Grad Lounge (God bless the Grad Lounge!), my attendance and participation in the Ethics and Narrative grad seminar, and large-group get-togethers to watch Duke Basketball on television. Where many of
  4. Catch-Up Monday
    Sep 28, 2026 · original
Slept well, ran to a slow, slow plateau time, had coffee and fruit, showered, Morning Prayer, public office hours at R&R where I caught up on (well, not really, but ‘answered some ’) emails, picked up some grocery basics, and now am home for the afternoon with an eye on Wednesday’s homily.
  5. Patronal, Creation, Healing
    Sep 27, 2026 · original
I had a good run this morning, best in about six weeks. Cup of coffee, fruit, online search for short-term furnishings (I may have found a pleasant rocker), a little work on a sermon, shower, and most of the rest of the day spent hammering out the rest of today’s morning sermon, for the patronal feast at St Michael and All Angels. After that I’ll come home to feed the ladies, then meander to the Parish Centre for a Faith Forum at which Margaret’s presenting a talk on the goodness of creation. When we get home from that, I’ll put together some thoughts for tonight’s Wholeness and Healing service, then go and lead it — by which time I’ll be right knackered, I expect, and who knows what’s in store for Monday. I’ll drop the sermons here when they’re set and have been preached. Michael and All Angels, Abingdon, 2026
  6. Further on Friday
    Sep 25, 2026 · original
Margaret and I metaphorically flipped a coin to determine which of us would go to the new gaff (a/k/a Nunc Dimittis), and the lot fell on me. After Morning Prayer and checking the office phone for messages (two non-message messages), I caught the X3, changed for the 8, and hopped from the bus a few steps from our new home. I managed the door locks more adeptly than I had Tuesday and strode excitedly into the house. First priority, I located the utility meters and photographed the current settings. I took a quick recce; the walls… well, it’s been a family home, and many cards and drawings and poems and other things had been blutacked to the (all-)white walls, and like Lake Superior, BluTack doesn’t give up its dead [adhesive] when the buyers of September arrive early, or something such as that. There are some bulletin-board walls, and an odd wall-paper/fabric in another room. Then I hoppe
  7. In Motion
    Sep 25, 2026 · original
I didn’t run yesterday morning. I gave myself the luxury of just walking-jogging through my miles, to buffer the transition from holiday to daily home life. This morning I ran to a slow good time (a minute faster than Wednesday), made coffee and ate some fruit, will shortly shower and go to Morning Prayer.
  8. Et Tu, O2?
    Sep 24, 2026 · original
Last week, I got a message from O2 advising me that my monthly allotment of data was running low. I guessed, incorrectly, that I could manage a week on what I had left. While I was in Antwerp, O2 let me know that I was almost down to zero. All the photos of churches had done me in; I should have known. I tried to add some data for the month from their app on my phone, but every time I followed the breadcrumbs to ‘Buy Bolt-Ons’, and I could see the page with different charges for different amounts of data, which was then immediately replaced with another ‘Get more with Bolt-Ons’ page, the page from which I was trying to get at the payment page. I tried over and over, and eventually gave up to get some rest. In the morning, I started trying again with my laptop instead of my phone. The same pattern: get to ‘Bolt-ons’ page, click the ‘get more data’ button, get returned to the bolt-ons page
  9. Zeroing In On Sync
    Sep 24, 2026 · original
Yesterday afternoon, after the Staff Meeting (a/k/a ‘Team Meeting’, a/k/a ‘Chapter Meeting’), I felt an almost paralysing wave of exhaustion. Most of my afternoon was spent propped up on the daybed, sometimes dozing, sometimes half-awake reading, sometimes just sort of vegetating. This morning, I walked-jogged my morning miles, cleaned up a dog deposit into which I had stepped on returning home from my miles and had then tracked around the kitchen before noticing, a much-needed cup of coffee and fruit, shower, Morning Prayer, groceries with Margaret, coffee and toast, and sifting and responding to an email backlog. I think ‘email’ is the part of retirement that I will celebrate the most, with many fewer obligatory responses to queries. Perhaps I will make some headway on Sundays two sermons this afternoon…
  10. Where To Begin?
    Sep 23, 2026 · original
We spent a holiday in Antwerp. We bought a house (here, that is — in Headington). I’m back to running, slowly. There’s mroe to be said about everything, but I’ll get to it gradually.
