  1. Yamdog – Documentation Generator for JavaScript Modules
    Jul 20, 2022 · original
Years ago I used JSDoc to generate API docs – application programming interface documentation – for my JavaScript packages. Gradually I dropped the tool. I did not like how its syntax made the comment blocks look like another kind of code. Here is an example copied from JSDoc’s Getting Started guide: /** * Represents a book. * @constructor * @param {string} title - The title of the book. * @param {string} author - The author of the book. */ function Book(title, author) { } Soon, I began writing my documenting comments in another, simpler way. That eventually led me to publish Yamdog – Yet Another Markdown API Docs Generator for JavaScript . Here is the same example written in yamdog syntax: // library.shelf.Book(title, author) // // Represents a book. // // Parameters: // title // string. The title of the book. // author // string. The author of the book. // function Book(title, author)
  2. Touch Gesture Icon Set for Public Domain
    Jun 7, 2022 · original
We collected a set of pixel graphic images for various touch gestures and user-interface related graphics. Then we derived from them more gesture graphics to suit our needs. Now we release the new derivatives back to the public domain. The original public domain gesture images were resourced from publicdomainvectors.org . The new derivatives are published here and on publicdomainvectors.org . See the samples and download links below. Image 1: We collected these original gesture images from publicdomainvectors.org. Image 2: We derived these images from the originals and released them back to the public domain. Most of the images were also present in the article Design of Gesture Recognition Libraries for Web . If you happen to need more graphics in this flavour let us know. Downloads Download the full set of original and derived PNG and SVG images below. multitouch-interface-pixel-theme-f
  3. Design of Gesture Recognition Libraries for Web
    May 24, 2022 · original
If you are a web developer, you might have dealt with mouse and touch gestures. You might have written code to detect a swipe from a stream of native browser events like touchmove , or you might have used a dedicated software library for the task. If you were mad enough, you might even have thought about building a neat gesture recognition library yourself. I happen to be that mad kind. To help us all, this article attempts to put together what is needed to build such a gesture library. Therefore I reviewed multiple gesture recognition libraries and analysed their design approaches and interfaces. This article lists the findings, including how do the libraries name the gestures, how do they expose the recognised data for the developer, and how do their interfaces bind gestures to elements. You can also find links to the libraries, common pitfalls in gesture detection, conflicts with the
  4. Fear the Melting
    Oct 29, 2021 · original
Color mapping of a photograph after dynamic compression. 2021. In the original photo, an old tree has grown algorithmic patterns on the thickest parts of its bark. Fresh bark and the tree growth bends and breaks the old bark. The breaking of the wood’s protective tissue remarkably resembles other natural breaking processes such as polar ice cap melting. Photo was captured using Pentax K-3 with Pentax 100 mm F2.8 Macro and a circular polarizer. Prints available: High quality 13″ x 19″ (330 x 483 mm) semi-gloss print. 50 € a piece incl. VAT. 5. Robust Geographical UTM Coordinate Parser
    Oct 13, 2021 · original
There are many ways to write geographical coordinates in UTM coordinate systems in the wild: 327874 12345 N 6730758 E 327874 6730758 N, -327874 W e327874 n6730758 N 6730758; E327874 x=327874 y= 6730758 y: 6730758;x:327874 ... It is not a trivial task to extract the numeric values from them. Therefore I created an open source Node.js package utm-coordinate-parser that manages exactly that, parsing the easting and northing values from the various formats. Simple and robust textual coordinate input became a desirable feature in Georap GIS project. Users often want to input coordinates they have found in paper maps, info boards and books, as well as in forums and message boards. Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projections such as NZTM in New Zealand and ETRS89 TM35 in Finland are widely used in their respected zones and thus often faced on the field. If Georap or any other end-user GIS a
  6. Single-Color Image Generator
    Oct 9, 2021 · original
Do you need a simple rectangular image filled with a single color? Surprisingly often I find myself looking for such a tool to create simple image files as backgrounds, placeholders or test images in my web development projects. Of course a full-featured photo manipulation software gets the job done but it feels overkill for such a simple task and especially so on mobile devices. Therefore I created a small web app to make single-color images. See the app at axelpale.github.io/make-color-image For nerds that prefer command line, the following imagemagick command does the same: $ convert -size 800x600 xc:#00FFFF image.png
  7. Fractal Clouds
    Oct 6, 2021 · original
In this post we explore generation of natural cloud-like images using Julia sets. We first discuss fractal properties of clouds in general and then introduce Julia sets and how they could be applied to cloud rendering. Finally we arrive in one particular Julia set and work it further until we have a nice, white, cloud-like fractal floating in blue sky. Natural clouds are fractals. When you look at a cloud, the surface might appear bumpy but smooth. But when you inspect it closer, for example by zooming with your camera to an edge of a cloud, you see finer details, smaller bumps, and shapes you were unable to recognise from afar. Were you still moving or zooming closer, finer details again appear. You would never arrive to a truly smooth surface between the blue sky and the white vapour, save for the molecular level. This hints the clouds exhibit the fractal property: finer and similarly
  8. Julia Set Fractal Renderer in JavaScript
    Oct 3, 2021 · original
Julia sets are curious two dimensional shapes. Many of them exhibit fractal borders in various unique and beautiful forms. To explore them in a web browser, I spent a few days to write a single-page app for the purpose. See the source code at github.com/axelpale/julia-explorer and try the app at axelpale.github.io/julia-explorer There exists multiple fractal explorers and renderers online already, for example usefuljs.net/fractals . However, I could not find one that would provide me enough freedom to choose and modify the color palettes of the fractal. Also, I wanted the fractal image be sharp enough for large-size printing, meaning over 10000×10000 pixels per image. Most pre-existing tools were not up for such large files. Here are some Julia fractals created with the app , for example. Link to the app: https://axelpale.github.io/julia-explorer/
  9. How to Represent Matrices in Source Code Comments
    Jul 30, 2021 · original
When working with code that deals with matrices , it is sometimes necessary to represent a matrix on the commenting lines of the code. Matrices have standard mathematical notation but unfortunately the notation is not trivial to reproduce with ASCII characters and monospaced font typical to source code. Therefore, mainly for my own reference but also possibly for you fellow coders, here are some of my attempts to represent matrices first with plain ASCII and then with some Unicode characters. The aim is to style the matrices in the comments well, so that they look good to both the readers of the source code and the readers of the documentation that could be generated from the codebase with tools such as JSDoc . First the widely practiced LaTeX powered notation generated with Online LaTeX Equation Editor : Then an initial attempt to reproduce the notation in plain ASCII: | a -b x | | b a
  10. 2D Geometry Libraries for JavaScript
    Jun 10, 2021 · original
Here is a collection of javascript programming libraries that focus on 2D plane geometry. The collection aims to map the most successful of such libraries and thus the collection is not complete and exhaustive in any way. Each library is associated with a link to the project homepage and my brief comments. Libraries that focus only on some aspect of 2D geometry are listed separately below, as also are the libraries with focus on geospatial (spherical) geometry. Libraries with focus on 3D or above are skipped altogether. General-purpose 2D geometry libraries The following libraries provide a wide set of basic geometric shapes and tools to manipulate them but may lack advanced features such as spatial indexing. Flatten-js – Good supply of basic geometric shapes such as point, vector, circle, and affine transformation matrix. Nicely separates the concepts of point and vector. Object-oriente
