- Group of 18 people missing in the Central Mediterranean: What happened after August 8?
Sep 29, 2026 · original
In the evening of the 9th of August 2026 the Alarm Phone hotline was alerted to a fibreglass boat which departed from Libya the evening before. According to family members, on the boat there were 18 people from Bangladesh, Egypt, Kurdistan and Somalia. 17 men and a 13/14 year old boy. They departed from western Lybia towards Lampedusa. The same night, NGO vessel Solidaire went to the last known position but could not find the boat, even after searching the bigger area. Despite trying innumerable times, Alarm Phone was never able to reach the group on their satellite phone. The Lybian authorities had no information about an interception of this boat. In the evening of the 11th of August we closed the case as unclear. Position of boat at 19:00 CEST on 8 August 2026. Screenshot taken by Alarm Phone. On 12 October 2025, we were called from a group of around 140 people escaping from Libya on a fishing vessel. Their GPS position (N34 50, E015 54) at 11:30 UTC showed them in international waters in the Maltese search and rescue zone. The people reported being under attack from another boat, calling the perpetrators Libyan militias. For hours, we kept in contact to the people on the boat as the attack continued and relayed all the information to European authorities, including Maltese and Italian ones – but no intervention followed. Then, the contact to the people on the boat broke off. In the afternoon of 13 October, we learnt the people had been rescued by the Italian Coast Guard, though some of the survivors were severely wounded by gunshots. Some days after our first statement about the violent attack , we identified the perpetrators when videos of the attack were shared with us. Families of the disappeared, ASGI Medea and Alarm Phone provide an update on the search for truth and accountability. A year after the boat that left Zuwara on 26 August 2025 lost contact in the Central Mediterranean, the families of the more than 70 people who were on board still have no news of what happened to their loved ones. The uncertainty continues to weigh on families who, day after day, are left without answers. My sister and I hold the hope deep in our hearts that one day we will be reunited. Even though we cannot see each other today, we firmly believe that one day we will all meet again, God willing. Our hearts are full of hope that we will see our family and loved ones again. Even though we cannot see each other today, we do not lose hope. We hope that they are safe and well. Life thrives on hope. That is why we believe that one day we will see our family and all the people - New measures against migration and new routes by people on the move

Photo: Alarm Phone In the past months, Alarm Phone received many calls from the Evros/Meriç region by people on the move being stranded in Greek territory. Most of these cases ended with heavy violence, robbery and illegal pushbacks by Greek authorities. Frontex, UNHCR and others are silent bystanders. In the morning of the 14 th of May, we learned about a group of 7 people who were stuck in Greek territory near the Evros river. They were calling for help – one person reportedly had a broken leg and needed immediate medical assistance. in the #Evros region in #Greece . A group of 7 people is calling for help. Source : Alarm Phone 1. Introduction The title of this regional report echoes a slogan we often chant during our meetings within the Alarm Phone network: “ Visas for everyone, or visas for no one! For all migrants worldwide! RESISTENCIA! ”. “For everyone or for no one” evokes the principle of equal rights, yet what the visa regime produces is precisely a differentiated and racist approach to freedom of movement. Most of the time, our activist work leads us to denounce the border regime in its most violent manifestations: the thousands of deaths and disappearances, militarisation, repression, criminalisation, etc. See our previous report which analysed the technologies used to prevent free movement of people. Yet racism, discrimination, humiliation and exploitation begin long before one physically crosses the border: it can happen at the door of a consulate, when faced with a pile of docu - 11 people remain missing after shipwreck provoked by the Algerian navy, survivor recounts their story

On the 1st of March 2026, Alarm Phone was contacted by a relative about a boat which was missing since the 26th of February. 29 people with different nationalities had left Algiers trying to reach Palma de Mallorca. Among the people on board were two babies. Alarm Phone alerted authorities and tried to reach the group, without success. On the 12th of March we were contacted by one of the people who had been travelling on the boat. He was in Assamaka, Niger. He reported that he was one of 18 survivors of a shipwreck provoked by the Algerian Naval Forces. The shipwreck was caused by the Algerian navy. They came to intercept us, so our captain stopped. They stayed at a distance, then our captain set off again. At that point, they set off behind us at high speed. The speed of their boat caused huge waves, which capsized our vessel. After the shipwreck, they stood by for 10 to 15 minutes with - Pushback by merchant vessel to Libya against the wishes of captain and crew

On 10th March 2026, Alarm Phone was informed about a boat in distress carrying 38 people on the way from Tobruk (Libya) to Crete. They were in the Egyptian Search and Rescue (SAR) zone, but close to the Greek SAR border. We alerted the Greek and the Egyptian authorities. We also informed two merchant vessels nearby that were heading towards Europe. But we could not reach them. Instead, JRCC Cairo ordered another merchant vessel, the NEXUS, to search and rescue the boat in distress. The captain of the NEXUS reacted immediately, found the boat, and took the people on board. But the position where the boat was rescued was just across the Libyan SAR border. For this reason, JRCC Cairo ordered the captain to bring the rescued people to Libya. The captain knew that Libya is not a safe place and did not want to bring the people to this country. He asked the Greek authorities (Hellenic Coastguar - Update on the efforts to locate the group reported missing after departing Zuwarah on 18 December 2025

116 persons still missing : Where are they? Families of a group of 116 people desperately seek answers after more than 2 months. First report published on the AP website on 24 December 2025 . After more than two months, the 116 people remain missing . The disappearance and the enormous distress it causes has lead to lots of unconfirmed information relating to the whereabouts of this group. First, it was reported that many p eople from Bangladesh survived and were rescued to Tunisia . It was also claimed that people were rescued and brought to Libya or even to Crete. Tragically, all s uch information has proven to be incorrect. The rumours and unconfirmed information are caused by the lack of official and verified information and the silence by Italian, Maltese, Tunisian and Libyan authorities. Together with the families , we demand the end to the violation of the right to know. Following several shipwrecks in the Strait of Sicily during Cyclone Harry, causing the disappearance of around a thousand people between 14 and 21 January 2026, MEM. MED, ASGI, Mediterranea and Alarm Phone sent letters to Italian national and local authorities urging them to immediately activate all of the necessary procedures for the identification of the bodies recovered along the Sicilian and Calabrian coasts. In order to provide answers to the numerous families currently searching for their loved ones, the above-mentioned organisations request the authorities to fully comply with protocols for DNA sampling and with the reliable traceability of burials.
